What Happened To The Real Captain Richard Phillips
Image
Tom Hanks' movie Captain Phillips is based on the memoir of Captain Richard Phillips titled A Captain's Duty. Phillips' memoir provides a detailed account of the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates and his life after the event. Phillips retired from his maritime career in 2014 and now speaks publicly about his experience.

Played by Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, there is a real man behind the titular protagonist. Captain Richard Phillips was born in Winchester, Ma, in 1955 and worked as the ship captain of the Mv Maersk Alabama when it was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. Four years later, this feat was chronicled by the Paul Greengrass film Captain Phillips.

Captain Phillips brought wider exposure to Richard Phillips remarkable true story. The docudrama was nominated for several awards, including six Oscar nominations. Among said nominations were Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for the just-introduced Barkhad Abdi, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Though the film itself is gripping,...

Captain Phillips Ending Explained
Image
In the ending of Captain Phillips, Captain Phillips and his crew survived the hijacking by the Somali pirates, thanks to his leadership and the crew's resourcefulness. The U.S. Navy intervened, saving Phillips after a tense standoff and negotiations with the pirates. Phillips returned to work at sea and wrote a book about the experience, while Muse is still serving a long prison sentence. The story highlights resilience and humanity in a cruel world.

The 2013 film Captain Phillips told the real-life story of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, which ended with Phillips being saved. In 2009, Captain Richard Phillips, played by Tom Hanks in the film, was the captain of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship that was targeted by Somali pirates, and Phillips was taken hostage by them. The incident was publicized as the first successful capture of a ship registered under the United States flag since the nineteenth century.

Why Charlie Sheen’s Top Gun Ripoff Failed (Despite The Navy’s Backing)
Image
Top Gun's success was not easily replicated, as evidenced by the long delay in completing the sequel, and the many poorly received rip-offs that followed. The success of Top Gun was due to its thrilling adventure and fun factor, which critics complaining about cheesiness and lack of believability missed. Navy Seals, the Navy-approved knock-off of Top Gun, failed to replicate its charm, escapism, and fast-paced action, resulting in terrible reviews and being deemed the "poor man's Top Gun."

While Top Gun inadvertently improved the Navy’s recruitment rates, the institution’s attempt to cash in on this trend with a Charlie Sheen vehicle failed disastrously. Upon its release in 1986, Top Gun was a much bigger hit than anticipated. The movie launched its star, Tom Cruise, into the A-list, made Tony Scott a majorly in-demand action director, and resulted in Navy recruitment rates significantly increasing for a few years after its release.

Captain Phillips: An Exercise in Cinematic Tension
Image
In 2009, the U.S. cargo ship, Maersk Alabama, was boarded by four Somali pirates who proceeded to hijack the vessel before escaping on a lifeboat with the ship's captain, Richard Phillips. What followed was a days-long ordeal in which Phillips was held captive on the lifeboat, fighting for his life whilst awaiting Navy intervention. Given the nature of these events, it wasn’t long until a dramatization materialized in the form of Paul Greengrass’s action-thriller, Captain Phillips.

Based on Phillips' book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy Seals, and Dangerous Days at Sea, the film debuted in 2013 to critical acclaim and box office success, leaving audiences on the very edge of their seats for the duration of this tantalizingly tense movie. Starring everyone's favorite fatherly hero, Tom Hanks and directed by Greengrass, who is known for his high-pressure historical recreations, it comes as no surprise that Captain Phillips is bursting with cinematic tension.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: October 2023
Image
There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.

In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.

Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

19 Firefighters Died. One Survived. The Heroic True Story behind Only the Brave
Jennifer Connelly, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, James Badge Dale, Miles Teller, and Taylor Kitsch in Line of fire (2017)
As Northern California prepares to recover from a devastating series of wildfires, the heroic and poignant true story behind one of the worst firefighter tragedies in U.S. history is now in theaters.

Only the Brave tells the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a highly trained team of wildland firefighters that lost 19 of its 20 members when they became entrapped in the Yarnell Hill blaze in Arizona on June 30, 2013.

The wildfire was ignited by lightning on June 28, 2013, and it quickly spread over 8,300 acres through a combination of strong winds, high temperatures and dry conditions caused by drought.

Got Your 6 Recognizes New Class of 6 Certified Projects
Got Your 6 has announced six new projects have received its 6 Certified designation, a program that recognizes film, television, theatrical, or digital content that accurately portrays veterans as leaders and civic assets.

The projects range from CBS’s new show “Seal Team,” the Tina Fey-produced “Great News” on NBC, and the biographical film “Rebel in the Rye” about WWII veteran J.D. Salinger.

The national veteran empowerment organization Got Your 6 launched the 6 Certified initiative in early 2015 as part of its mission to change the veteran “broken/hero” stereotype held by 80 percent of U.S. civilians. The program challenges entertainment industry executives and content creators to craft more thoughtful narratives around veterans and military families.

Got Your 6 announced the following projects were awarded with 6 Certified status:

SEAL Team (2017)
‘Seal Team’ Review: Tune in for a Decent David Boreanaz Drama, Come Back for His Skydiving Dog
SEAL Team (2017)
“Seal Team” is a perfectly adequate military drama. Nothing about it will surprise you, and nothing about it will take you out of your comfort zone. Through two episodes, creator Benjamin Cavell’s new CBS series establishes itself as a serviceable entry in the growing canon of troops-on-the-ground TV shows, surpassing NBC’s entry “The Brave” and adding just enough visual flair and human connection to make David Boreanaz fans happy.

There is also a dog.

Named Dita in real-life, the dedicated canine companion plays a militarized man’s best friend. Specifically, Jason Hayes’ (Boreanaz) best friend, and she accompanies the elite group of Navy SEALs on their missions. Dita leads the charge through various homes, bombed out buildings, and underground tunnels, helping to track bad guys and point out dangerous traps facing the team.

A look at Justice Ninja Style – Filmed in Missouri in 1986
Article by Mark Longden

I love regional genre cinema – those movies that existed in the early days of VHS and video rental stores,

when seemingly anything could turn a small profit. There are many of them – 1977’s “The Demon

Lover”, 1987’s “Night Screams”, and the early movies of Donald Farmer, among many many more. It was

with great delight when I read the We Are Movie Geeks article on the St Louis Video Society and their

upcoming showing of a local movie so obscure it doesn’t even have an IMDb page, the amazing “Justice

Ninja Style”.

This gem was filmed in DeSoto, a little drive out of St Louis in what would politely be referred to as rural

Missouri, and is the brainchild of one Ron White, an apparent 10th dan black belt in karate. He’s written a

few books, including one with the excellent title “So You...

Trailer For Josh Brolin's Intense Firefighting Film Only The Brave
I've got a great new trailer here for you to watch for the upcoming firefighter film Only the Brave, which stars Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, and Jeff Bridges. The movie tells the harrowing true story of the team of firefighters called the Granite Mountain Hotshots. They are the most elite team of firefighters in the country. They are basically the Navy SEALs of firefighters. This looks like a hell of a good film that will honor the heroism of the men and women who put their lives at risk to help their communities and other people.

The movie was directed by Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and this is the synopsis:

All men are created equal… then, a few become firefighters. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families,...

Dominic Cooper flexes his action hero muscles as a globe-trotting trouble-shooter in Stratton. Hired as last-minute replacement for Henry Cavill shortly before shooting began, the Preacher star does a serviceable job as the eponymous hotshot commando with the Special Boat Services, Britain’s equivalent to the U.S. Navy SEALs. But he is mostly firing blanks thanks to a creaky script and dim-witted plot. Screenwriter Duncan Falconer, himself a former Sbs officer, adapted this fast-paced Eurothriller from his own novels. Director Simon West aims for a kind of Jason Bourne or Mission: Impossible feel, but he falls short in budget, star power...

Have we entered a new golden age for shark movies? Probably not, but that isn’t stopping Syfy from commissioning a “Deep Blue Sea” sequel 18 years after the original. The move follows the recent success of both “The Shallows” and “47 Meters Down,” not to mention Syfy’s own “Sharknado” series.

Michael Beach is starring in the film and, since he’ll also appear in next year’s “Aquaman,” it doesn’t seem premature to deem this a case of nominative determinism. Darin Scott (“House Party: Tonight’s the Night”) is helming this particular ship, which is already filming in Cape Town.

Here’s what former director Jack Perez said of the direction the sequel was originally going to take back when it was slated for a DVD release in 2009, according...

Deep Blue Sea 2 Has Started Shooting in Africa
Saffron Burrows in Peur bleue (1999)
Sometimes, dreams do come true. After nearly twenty years, a sequel to one of the most beloved shark movies ever is finally happening. That's right, folks. Deep Blue Sea 2 is being filmed as we speak. According to Moviehole, Deep Blue Sea 2 isn't just happening, it is already being shot in Africa. That's the good part. The possible bad part? It is being done as a SyFy original movie. Here's what Moviehole had to say about it.

"Darin Scott ('House Party: Tonight's the Night') has been shooting the film in Cape Town, with newly announced 'Aquaman' co-star (and 'Third Watch' alum) Michael Beach among the cast. The film is being produced as a telefilm for the SyFy channel, so don't expect cameos from any of the original 'Deep Blue Sea" players (namely Thomas Jane)."

So not seeing Thomas Jane come back to kick some...

Latest Destiny 2 Gameplay Showcases Sequel’s First New Strike, Inverted Spire
Bungie spared no expense in revealing the first gameplay for Destiny 2 yesterday and, like you, we’re still sifting through and digesting the huge amount of info that it dumped on us during the event. Everything, from new subclasses for the shooter’s Warlock, Titan and Hunter classes, to punchy new weaponry, fantastical planets and dangerous new enemies were showcased in full force during the presentation’s duration, but that’s not all. Not even close.

Strikes, a type of activity that are best described as pseudo-dungeons, have always been considered a core pillar of Destiny‘s gameplay, so it comes as little surprise that they’re set to return in Destiny 2, though it looks as if Bungie’s given them a drastic upgrade for the sequel. The first brand new Strike to be revealed, Inverted Spire, was playable during yesterday’s event.

Set on the planet Nessus, Inverted Spire...

Prison Break: Poseidon's Identity Revealed!
Prison Break returns with an all new episode.  Now that Michael and the team are close to escaping Yemen, will the focus now turn to their battle against Poseidon?  Will we learn more than we did last week? (Which wasn't much...)  Read on to find out this week's takeaways:

Michael's Yemen Team is Dwindling -- Michael began with a core group who he was trying to break out of prison.  Abu Ramal is dead, Sid was killed and Ja has left.  Was there a purpose in Michael trying to free them, did he need them to get out, or did his usual empathetic nature drive him to break them out because he truly cares for others?  I think the only people he originally wanted out of Ogygia was Abu Ramal (because of Poseidon), and Whip (since they seem to have a back-history and know about Poseidon).

CBS: Stop Saying That ‘This Is Us’ Is the Biggest New Hit of the Year; ‘Bull’ Is
No “Bull,” CBS wants you to know that the freshman Michael Weatherly series is actually the No. 1 new show of the year in total viewers, over NBC’s lauded “This Is Us.”

“We congratulate them on their success, but we like winning,” CBS senior exec VP Kelly Kahl said. He also pointed out that even CBS’ “Blue Bloods” has a larger audience than any other drama on the other networks, except “This Is Us.”

“The Big Bang Theory” is the “Wayne Gretzky of comedy,” he noted, arguing that no other half-hour comes close in total viewers, which is why they’re big on spinoff entry “Young Sheldon.” The show was recently renewed for two more seasons, a negotiation that Moonves characterized as amicable.

He also said he “hoped” that the show will continue even beyond that. “We’ll do these two years and we’re not going to just lay down,...

‘Hook Jaw #5′ Review
Written by Si Spurrier | Art by Conor Boyle | Published by Titan Comics

Hook Jaw has had plenty of bite so far, a lot to sink our teeth into and a story easy to dive into. Also ideal for bad puns apparently. Joking aside, Si Spurrier has managed to put a fresh spin and update on a property that even when it was conceived in the 1970′s on the back of Jaws was a little derivative and part of a fad. What I have enjoyed is marrying the updated parts with enough of the original core concept to create something that though familiar, is most definitely its own animal. Or fish. I’ll stop now.

When all the mad jumble of Somali pirates, marine scientists, CIA agents, Navy Seals, and Great Whites are pushed aside, what this has all been leading to is a quest. The quest is for the shipping...

Thus far, it looks like primetime soaps are making a comeback, and we could not be more excited.

Thanks to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, we now have a list of shows poised to be on the 2017-2018 schedule.

1. S.W.A.T. - CBS S.W.A.T. hails from Shawn Ryan and stars Shemar Moore and Jay Harrington. It has been a frontrunner ever since it was announced because of the talent associated with it. Review: ‘Sand Castle’ Gets to the Heart of War’s Futility
Similar to lead character Pvt. Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), screenwriter Chris Roessner joined the United States Army in July of 2001 to serve in the Reserves and earn college money. Two months later 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly he was thrust into a full-scale war in the Middle East and he needed to steel himself to that fact. He wasn’t in the Special Forces, Navy SEALs or Marines — he was just a soldier walking onto the frontlines like the rest. His story wasn’t one of unanimous heroics wherein he proved crucial to earning that “Mission Accomplished” banner everyone remembers as empty sentiment. Like so many military men and women, he entered Iraq at the beginning of something still unfinished today and left well before any true strides were made.

Roessner survived his stint and returned home with journals and photos depicting his experience. He took that money and enrolled in USC’s film school,...

‘Hook Jaw #4′ Review
Written by Si Spurrier | Art by Conor Boyle | Published by Titan Comics

If there’s one thing this book confirms, it’s that the appetite for sharks in any medium is still there. People still love a little chomping action it seems. Si Spurrier has been pretty clever by making Hook Jaw, the nominal star of the book, more of a catalyst for the plotlines rather than the central figure in them. We have a big jumble of ecology and politics, of marine biologists and Somali pirates, of the U.S Navy, the U.N, and the CIA. If there was a kitchen sink lying around I’m sure Si Spurrier would find something to throw it at.

If you’ve read up to issue 4 you’ll have a pretty good handle on what’s going on. The ‘deal’ struck between the marine scientists and the CIA/Navy, to extract...
