Chris Columbus is probably eclipsed only by Steven Spielberg (on producing duty here) as the unassuming master of the Millennial childhood classic. Having written Gremlins and The Goonies, he went on to direct Adventures In Babysitting, Home Alone and its sequel, Mrs. Doubtfire and, of course, the first two Harry Potter films. Though he recently traded in family fare for producing Robert Eggers’ films, he’s back in the director’s chair with Netflix’s glossy adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club. If it’s been a while since you set foot in an airport bookshop, this is TV presenter Richard Osman’s phenomenally popular cosy crime-book series. And it...

The Final Cut, released in 2004, is one of Robin Williams‘s more serious but forgettable works. The movie, rated at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, has long annoyed critics and audiences alike for its uneven pacing and middling plot. Even though the film presents an intriguing premise at first, The Final Cut quickly slows down to a tedious roll that refuses to get out of second gear.
Despite all its faults, however, The Final Cut has some hold over the audience, making it a sleeper cult classic in certain movie circles. It’s initial droll pacing and half-baked idea, when revisited with a forgiving eye, unfolds as a layered and intimate drama told on a small scale [Haphazard Stuff].
As the world mourns the great actor and comedian on the 11th anniversary of his passing, it’s time to review The Final Cut as the underrated gem that it is.

Hollywood stars Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren have revealed an interesting connection between Tom Hardy and their new movie, The Thursday Murder Club. In a recent appearance on The Today Show, Brosnan and Mirren revealed that they received the offer for the British crime drama, MobLand, while working on the Netflix movie.
Mirren explained that though the script wasn’t complete at that point, she was eager to join, especially knowing Tom Hardy was involved. “We obviously knew that Tom Hardy was involved, and I think both of us should have known that was gonna be a great thing,” the actress said.
The former James Bond star also recalled receiving the offer through their agent. “We had the same agent… and he sent to me, Guy Ritchie, five episodes. I said ‘I’m doing it, I wanna go back to London,'” Brosnan shared. And soon, they were playing a married couple in MobLand.

The nineties was the heyday of the mid-level action hero. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal churned out a whole series of increasingly profitable action programmers in the early part of the decade. Seagal’s movies were wildly profitable for Warner Bros, while Van Damme had a home at Universal Pictures. Every studio wanted its own Jcvd or Seagal, with Paramount trying to launch Jeff Speakman with The Perfect Weapon (which has a devoted fan in our own writer Ej Tangonan) and Fox even trying with football player Howie Long in Firestorm. One studio that badly wanted their own action guy was New Line Cinema, but before they found their niche in the genre with Rumble in the Bronx and Mortal Kombat, they tried to launch two promising action heroes. One was Thomas Ian Griffith, whose (pretty awesome) action flick Excessive Force was only given a small regional release.

Robin Williams was one of the most beloved actors of his time. While getting his start as a stand-up comedian, he was known for his ability to oscillate between genres and styles. That is, he was equally iconic, playing the emotional role of John Keating in Dead Poets Society as he was in the comedy Mrs. Doubtfire.
Williams also took on some iconic roles as a voice actor. Most notably, he provided his talents for the voice of the Genie in Aladdin. Songs like "Friend Like Me" were even more elevated by their good writing, with Williams' comedic and electric voice acting imbued into the story.
Williams was once in an odd project with Jennifer Coolidge. While getting her start a couple of decades ago, Coolidge has also gotten more famous in recent years, primarily due to her work on The White Lotus. This year, she was also in the kids' movie A Minecraft Movie.

The legendary fan-favorite Robin Williams has been gone for a little over a decade, but Matthew Lawrence appears to be planning on bringing him back. Talking recently in Entertainment Weekly’s Comic Con video suite, he expressed his wish to digitally resurrect the late actor using artificial intelligence to recreate his voice for future projects. Lawrence said:
I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic.
Continuing, he explained his idea and how he was inspired to pursue it after revisiting an old commercial featuring the late legend.
It’s kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what’s going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerised voiceover. And it always stuck with me.

Every comedian, at one point or another, tries their hand at drama. As much as everyone enjoys a good laugh, no one wants to be typecast in the same kinds of roles throughout their career. Sometimes, it works brilliantly. Take Robin Williams, for example -- he used his incredible gift for comedy to become a hugely popular star on both the big and small screens. Then he seamlessly transitioned to drama, appearing in films like "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poets Society," "Awakenings," and "The Fisher King," and later went above and beyond behind the scenes to win a well-deserved Oscar for "Good Will Hunting." While audiences always recognized him for his energetic stand-up routines and comedic performances in blockbusters like "Mrs. Doubtfire" and Disney's animated "Aladdin," he still managed to carve out a solid niche as a bankable dramatic star.

James Gunn's Superman has received a largely positive response from critics and fans. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the DC Universe blockbuster is "certified" fresh and "verified hot" with approval ratings of 83% and 91% from critics and fans, respectively.
However, those scores show that not everybody loved Gunn's first Dcu outing, and Mrs. Doubtfire star Matthew Lawrence fits into that group. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, the actor revealed which part of Superman didn't sit well with him. "This got me. This really got me. I'm a huge animal lover. I work in conservation. I have more pets than I can count, most of them reptiles and amphibians. But I've had some amazing connections with dogs over the years. And that is not the relationship that I wanted to see," Lawrence remarked, referring to the bond, or lack thereof, between David Corenswet's Superman and Krypto.

Steven Spielberg is the highest-grossing director with $10.7 billion in worldwide box office (not adjusted for inflation), with James Cameron right behind at $8.7 billion, basically one "Avatar" movie. The top-grossing actors include Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Zoe Saldana, and Chris Pratt each in the $14 billion range (unadjusted). Pretty darn impressive ... but film composers scoff at such meager numbers, probably while twirling their batons.
The highest-earning film composers don't just match these figures; they far exceed them. Movie composers get their due credit, as their work is frequently one of the most enjoyable and enduring parts of the films we love. But while we talk a lot about composers, it's not often that the conversation turns to what really matters in Hollywood -- the money they make for movie studios. We're going to change that right now. The original author of The Thursday Murder Club defends Pierce Brosnan's divisive casting.
Speaking to Empire, author Richard Osman said of the Netflix feature film adaptation of his novel, "You have to do something unusual and different and interesting." Osman continued, "Here’s the key thing about Pierce Brosnan playing Ron: Pierce Brosnan is who Ron would choose to play Ron. In the next book, I’ve got a scene with Ron and Ibrahim discussing who the best Bond is, and Ron is very much a Pierce Brosnan man. And Ibrahim is Timothy Dalton. For me, that’s the joy."
Based on Osman's 2020 novel of the same name, which jump-started a series now on the cusp of its fifth title, The Thursday Murder Club stars Pierce Brosnan as retired union leader Ron Ritchie, Helen Mirren as former spy Elizabeth Best, Ben Kingsley as retired psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif, and Celia Imrie...

One must be wary of the rating systems on IMDb. As one can see from the website's list of the 250 highest-rated movies (which is selected by its users), IMDb tends to favor ultra-masculine stories centering on criminals, cops, or soldiers. The top-rated film on its list is Frank Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption," a 1994 drama about prisoners. Next is Francis Ford Coppola's mafia epic "The Godfather," followed by Christopher Nolan's superhero flick "The Dark Knight." Also hovering near the top are films like "Fight Club," "The Matrix," "12 Angry Men," "Pulp Fiction," and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." These are all excellent films, mind you, but when clustered together, they reveal something about the taste of the average IMDb user: Crime, violence, and male protagonists all seem to rule the roost. In short, the list is very basic.

On its massive-eyed face, “The Masked Singer” may seem like just a goofy reality competition series, meant for little more than an hour of escapism. And really, it is that. Fox’s singing contest is predicated on sticking various calibers of famous people in insane, occasionally nightmare-fueling costumes, having them perform for a live audience, and letting the audience guess who the voice belongs to.
It’s simple and merry, if occasionally a little obvious (just about everyone clocked Vanessa Hudgens and Amber Riley immediately). But, as it wraps up its 13th season this week, “The Masked Singer” has also become something else entirely, according to those who have competed on it — a surprisingly therapeutic experience.

A trip down Hollywood memory lane will always have us feeling all the feels, especially if it involves two of the biggest names the industry has had to offer – Tom Cruise and Robin Williams. Say whatever you may, you cannot deny that these actors redefined what it meant to be a star. While Robin Williams is no longer among us, because the world is just unfair that way, we cannot help but reminisce about the good times when he gave us performances like that in Dead Poets Society.
Recently, a video has been making the rounds on the Internet where we can see Tom Cruise crashing Robin Williams’ moment. What follows is a heartwarming exchange between the two, a wholesome reminder that Tinseltown shines brighter when there is genuine camaraderie in the mix.

Some say there's a thin line separating good from evil. Human morality and depravity can exist within a single person, as oftentimes monstrous people will justify their wickedness by calling it good. Sorry to get super deep and heavy on you here, but that is just how it goes. All of it to say, while good and evil are concrete and defined philosophical precepts, how they play out is oftentimes, well, super messy.
Perhaps that is why some of the best big screen villains have been played by "good guy" actors. As a moviegoer, there's only one thing more painful than watching a villain do horrible things; and that's when that villain is played by a hero.
