In James D.R. Hickox's 1995 horror flick "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest," the rural mayhem of Gatlin, Nebraska is transposed to the concrete wilds of Chicago. A child cult leader named Eli (Daniel Porter) is adopted by a citybound foster mother (Nancy Lee Grahn) who is astonished by his gentle demeanor and Amish-like language. What she doesn't know is that he worships a demonic corn deity (!) called He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Said deity had been mentioned in both 1984's "Children of the Corn" and 1992's "Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice," but no one had ever seen the elusive Hwwbtr, leaving its true nature mysterious.
Eli has magical corn kernels in his possession, and he can swiftly grow and harvest a miniature corn crop in an isolated Chicago lot. This attracts both Hwwbtr and an eager cult of teen followers. Eli, like his "Corn" forebears,...

The curtains have closed on the production of A Corpse in Kensington, an ambitious horror project that promises to blend chilling suspense with moments of darkly humorous romance. Helmed by writer-director Brian Patrick Butler, known for his innovative film Friend of the World, the film is set in the atmospheric neighbourhood of Kensington in San Diego, California. The story follows a trio of entangled characters who find themselves stalked by a menacing killer. A unique touch? The killer may not be entirely human—or could be someone dangerously close, hiding in plain sight.
Derrick Acosta (Mega64) leads the cast as Lionel, a solitary figure haunted by a past infatuation. When he reconnects with his childhood crush, it appears he might get a second shot at love. However, his ambitions are complicated by her unpredictable boyfriend and a terrifying predator lurking in the shadows. The film’s plot intensifies as Lionel,...

There are a lot of good-to-great Stephen King movies ... and then there's the "Children of the Corn" series. Somehow, King's short story "Children of the Corn," originally published in a 1977 issue of Penthouse and added to his 1978 short story collection "Night Shift," has popped off a horde of sequels and not one but two remakes. As of this writing, there are 11 (!!) "Children of the Corn" movies. How in the hell did this happen? Well, for one thing, the first film, released in 1984, was a big hit — primarily because it was made rather cheaply. And that then became the name of the game: make quick, cheap sequels and dump them on home video (only the first two movies, "Children of the Corn" and "Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice," went to theaters).

While it can be difficult for horror sequels to live up to the legacy of the original, many were better than expected in hindsight. Jaws 2 was the perfect example of a great horror movie whose reputation was tarnished by the iconic nature of the original. Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice captured the eerie essence of it's source material and deserved to be reappraised by modern audiences.
Horror sequels have always been notoriously difficult to get right, but looking back on some sequels years later, Im often shocked by how well some of them hold up. Despite certain franchises being criticized for continuing indefinitely, when I took the time to truly look at individual entries and considered them on their own merits alone, I was consistently surprised by how many hidden gems were way better than I remembered. Certain sequels get a bad reputation that, in hindsight,...

Sequels in the 1990s created cult classics, box office hits, and fun follow-ups, adding depth to beloved franchises. Alien 3, Children of the Corn II, and Return of the Living Dead III showed that sequels can thrive with creativity and innovation. Standout sequels like The Exorcist III, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, and Scream 2 proved that good horror sequels were possible in the 90s.
Horror sequels can be extremely difficult to get right and often fail to live up to the original, but during the 1990s, several sequel releases earned their status as beloved classics. The trouble with a horror sequel was that normally, the element of surprise had been removed, the villain had been revealed, and the shock value that categorized the best horror movies was no longer present. However, the best sequels often used these aspects to their advantage and added the lore of the series, which...

Stephen King's 1977 short story "Children of the Corn" has been adapted to film an embarrassing number of times. The first adaptation was a 1983 short called "Disciples of the Crow," and it was off to the races. The first feature in the franchise, directed by Fritz Kiersch, hit in 1984 and starred Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton as an innocent city couple who make the mistake of driving through Gatlin, Nebraska, a town that's been taken over by its under-16 population. The kids, following the directions of an off-screen demonic entity they call He Who Walks Behind the Rows, have murdered all the adults and set up their own blood cult. The protagonists run afoul of the kiddie cult and barely escape with their lives intact.
"Children of the Corn" was followed by eight sequels, released from 1993 through 2018. Few of them are good, although the monster design for "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest...

The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

Horror movie franchises are certainly not a rarity in the genre, with some of the biggest names in the horror game having multiple movies in their cinematic collection. While many of these long-running movie series have come to a conclusion, other franchises have promised a final film, going so far as to include that very word in the movie's title, only to renege on that promise and continue to add more entries following that "final" feature.
Although not contained solely to the horror genre, the prevalence of final chapters that do not actually conclude their franchises is higher when it comes to horror movies. Most of these horror movie franchises continued long beyond their claim to cap off their story, as is the case with Children of the Corn and Puppet Master, and one of the most popular horror properties is a repeat offender. The best order to watch the Children of the Corn movies is to start with the 2023 prequel, followed by the 1984 film or its 2009 TV movie remake. Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice picks up after the original film, providing insight into what happened to the remaining cult members. Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering introduces Naomi Watts' character and explores the mysterious origins of He Who Walks Among the Rows.
Since the Children of the Corn franchise has a huge number of entries, it can be a little tricky for newcomers to work out what order the Stephen King series takes place in. The Children of the Corn franchise began back in 1984 with the original Children of the Corn, an adaptation of King’s short story of the same name from his debut collection Night Shift. “What is all this shit about the corn?!” A quote to end all quotes if ever there was one. It perfectly sums up what makes Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice such a campy joy to watch. Chockful of moments guaranteed to delight fans of so-bad-its-good movies, The Final Sacrifice trades in the more straightforward tone and narrative of the 1984 original for giddy schlock. It's borderline criminal that the movie doesn't have a greater cult following as it has all the hallmarks of a classic. Characters consistently saying ridiculous things in the most unnatural ways possible? Check. Characters dying by the most absurd and hilarious methods possible? Check. A kooky score mostly composed of what sounds like flutes fit for a soap opera? Check. Evil children, bad sex scenes, and a man getting impaled by a stock of corn? Check, check, and check. Whatever way you slice it,...

A new Children of the Corn movie appeared in 2023, but its Rotten Tomatoes score hints at it being one of the worst films in the franchise. The original Children of the Corn, which is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, was released in 1984 and has gained a significant cult following. The film follows a twelve-year-old who manipulates other children to take the power and control from their parents and go on a bloody-thirsty rampage killing all of them. The film is deeply intense and disturbing, and it's one of King's most overlooked straight-up horrors.
Horror reboots have been huge hits lately, as Hellraiser, Prey, which was a fresh take of the Predator franchise, and Scream, (though Scream was more of a "requel"), were all positively received by their respective fanbases. Unfortunately, Children of the Corn doesn't continue that trend, as it's currently rated "rotten" on Rotten...

They’re back. Rlje Films presents the Stephen King reboot Children of the Corn by Kurt Wimmer on 500+ screens. It’s a redo of the classic 1984 slasher-horror film about kids possessed by a demonic spirit in a dying cornfield, with bloody, rampaging results.
King’s iconic short story features a 12-year-old Nebraska girl who recruits the kids in her small town for a killing spree of all the adults, and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival. There are some new twists, in Wimmer’s version, the corn is genetically modified. Starring Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey and Bruce Spence.
The story is great, spawning numerous spinoffs beginning with Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice in 1992 followed by Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest in 1995. Most went direct to video.

Having filmed in 2020, it’s surprising that it took so long for us to finally receive the Children of the Corn remake. Usually, when that happens, it spells disaster for the film. But having the seen the film (check out my review here) I can say that it’s very fun and beautifully shot. I know I’m in the minority but I had a blast. So I was absolutely geeked to sit down with director Kurt Wimmer (who made the cult classic Equilibrium) and stars Elena Kampouris and Kate Moyer to discuss this film. I’m already really rooting for this film to find its audience because I genuinely had a lot of fun with it. Check out the interview above!

“In Their World, Adults Are Not Allowed… To Live.” So runs the chilling tagline for the 1984 cult classic horror Children of the Corn, based on the short story by horror maestro Stephen King. Set in an agricultural town in Nebraska, the film tells the story of 12-year-old Isaac, a real little charmer who indoctrinates the local children into a religious cult that slaughters anyone over 18! We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.
For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.
Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.
We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Children of the Corn: Genesis is the latest sequel in a long line of films based on Stephen King's short story "Children of the Corn." This is the ninth or tenth film in a series that just will not quit. Now, Dimension Extreme is forced to make this latest film in order to retain rights on future productions of this franchise. Apparently, a film must be made once every ten years to retain the rights. So, here is a very low budget horror film starring Bill Drago and Barbara Nedeljakova of Hostel II fame. The mythos of a town overrun by murdering children is toned down in this film. Instead, Children of the Corn: Genesis sticks to a small cast, one set and a child with telekinetic powers to keep the film simple.

Unbelievably, Dimension Extreme is getting ready to release a ninth "Children of the Corn" title in August, 2011! For those of you keeping track, there has been Children of the Corn (1984), Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1992), Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995), Children of the Corn: The Gathering (1996), Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998), Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return (1999) and the list goes on and on and on! All of these films are very loosely based on a short story from Stephen King's horror anthology The Night Shift (1979). Since then, there have been hours and hours of films, including a television movie, dedicated to these maize loving characters. Now, Dimension will try to capitalize on a theme that surely must be losing steam with Children of the Corn: Genesis, which will go straight to DVD. As well, the title seems to state...

Picking up directly where the first film left off, the murdered bodies of the adults have been discovered and all the kids have been moved to a neighbouring town where they continue their reign of terror.
Unnecessary, but competently executed sequel, with some picturesque cinematography, is an improvement over the original simply because the film has an understanding that the material is trashy and plays up to that aspect. Forget about character depth or substance. This isn't what this film is about! Instead, Children of the Corn II is a guilty pleasure all about the cheap thrills! And it certainly delivers with plenty of cheap thrills throughout as the title children of the film find all kinds of creative and grisly ways to murder the adults of the film highlighted by some fine...

It has been The movie that has eluded Children of the Corn fans for years. It was a film that had only been available previously in VHS format and since the start of the dvd popularity in the late 90's, had been a missing piece of the 'Gatlin' franchise. The question has risen time and time again - "When is the second movie going to be released on dvd?" After years of no response, it seemed that a fans only choice was to keep that original VHS copy protected under all circumstances. Now this year, that restless question has finally been answered. Echo Bridge Entertainment, under it's distribution partnership with Miramax films, has made what is arguably next to the original one of the most popular of the series, available for the first time on dvd!

Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice is coming to DVD from Echo Bridge Entertainment on April 12, 2011. I’m not sure what took so long, but it’s better late than never. This was the first of numerous sequels made under the Dimension Films banner by The Weinstein Brothers.
The plot involves Hemingford, Nebraska. a town near Gatlin (the original film’s setting). The people of Hemingford decide to adopt the surviving sadistic evil murderous savages of children in Gatlin, intending to help the children start new lives. Unfortunately for the well-meaning locals, the children go out to the cornfield where one of the corn cult members, Micah, has been possessed by a demon sent by He Who Walks Behind The Rows, the demonic entity the cult worships. Over the course of one weekend, the children kill everyone in the town.
