Body Snatchers is the third film adaptation of Jack Finney's novel, the first being L'Invasion des profanateurs de sépultures (1956), followed by the remake of the same name L'Invasion des profanateurs (1978). A fourth adaptation was later made, Invasion (2007).
Warner Bros. originally scheduled the film for release in October 1992. They opted for the more comedic Innocent Blood (1992) as their horror release that season, as it was felt that the glut of serious genre fare such as Hellraiser III (1992), Candyman (1992), Dr. Rictus (1992), and Dracula (1992) would overwhelm the film's potential. The release was moved around several times in 1993 before its unceremonious limited release came in January 1994.
