Avis à la une
Totally hilarious comedy with the adorable Goldie superbly playing a con artist who b.s.'s her way into the lives of a group of complete strangers, upsetting the existence of many and enriching others. One of Goldie's and Martin's best.
This film is well known, and I've read many comments on it. Some loves it, some does not, as usual. I think I depends on what you are looking for. This is in my opinion one of the best comedy of the last 20 years, light, funny, sincere. Hawn and Martin gave their best performance. (Moreover Hawn is so charming!) I keep this film on the shelf with Wilder's Apartment, Reiner's When Harry met Sally, etc. Enjoy it!
This movie is so cute! From the first scene to the last, this adorable romantic comedy will have you doubled over in laughter. In the beginning, Steve Martin proposes to his girlfriend, Dana Delaney, while unveiling a custom house he built her, with a gigantic red ribbon wrapped around it. She scoffs and declines, and in his grief, he gets drunk at a bar and has a one-night stand with a beautiful waitress, Goldie Hawn.
In the morning, with Steve gone and only a cocktail napkin to remember him by, Goldie concocts a genius scheme. The napkin has a drawing of Steve's house on it, and she finds it and starts living in it, taking on the identity of his new wife! Julie Harris and Donald Moffat play Steve's parents, and as Goldie makes up a story of how she and their son met and fell in love, they eat right out of her hand. With a fully paid house, charge accounts at every store, and a town full of people who want to cozy up to her, she's got it made-until Steve shows up.
Full of hilarious scenes and constant twists in the plot, HouseSitter is a movie you'll add to your collection. It's a classic, clean romance from the 1990s with a great premise and a proposal out of every girl's dreams. How cute is this, by the way: when my family moved into our second home, there was a gigantic red bow wrapped around it on moving day!

It's truly refreshing to see an intelligent movie with so much crap coming out of Hollywood these days. The fact that this was released in 1992 does not say much about what Hollywood has produced since.
I've always loved Steve Martin. I think he's one of the most underrated actors in the past 30yrs. Sure he's not been in a million pictures, but the old adage sticks; quality, not quantity. Goldie Hawn is one of the most honest and lovely actresses to grace the silver screen. This movie would pale in comparison if these two actors were not involved. They deliver the goods in more ways than one.
Beyond Martin and Hawn, this picture is special for it's writing. Mark Stein should be patted on the back and then some. Wow, is all I have to say. You can tell how much thought was put into every scene by the "believable" detail that's generously provided throughout the entire movie. The intricate interplay and "make believe" between Martin and Hawn is nothing short of genius.
Feel good movie? Check. Intelligent, funny? Check. Worth a watch? Absolutely!

Steve Martin plays Newton Davis, a big city architect, whose marriage proposal is turned down by his childhood sweetheart Becky (Dana Delany). His proposal included a dream house, which has been sitting empty ever since. But after sharing a one night stand with Gwen, a waitress with a knack for telling lies. Gwen eventually moves into the empty house and convinces the neighbors, including Davis' parents and Becky, that she's his wife. When Davis arrives, he formulates a plan to use Gwen and their fake marriage to win back Becky.
Sure. the plot sounds a little crass, but the actors make it work to a certain degree. Martin, basically playing his 'American everyman' role with a flair for physical comedy, gets some laughs as Davis. But Hawn steals the show, it's her spawn of lies and the sweetness of her character that elevates this movie from being your standard sitcom. But, in spite of the acting, the movie still suffers from a script that lacks a real comedic punch. Too often recycled gags, like Newton's uptight parents and jerk boss, are used to strain humor into otherwise bland proceedings. A movie like this could have used new ideas. (6/10)

- AnecdotesThe house was built as a standing set in Concord, Massachusetts. It was torn down soon after filming ended.
- GaffesAbout 37 mins in, when Steve Martin falls over the couch and hits his feet on the table, Goldie Hawn briefly grimaces and looks at the crew possibly expecting a 'cut' before the scene continues as scripted.

- Crédits fousWhen the title is shown in the opening credits, there's a red ribbon underneath the title that ties itself into a bow.
