There are few films more iconic than Steven Spielberg's Jaws. The creature feature put the Oscar-winning filmmaker on the map and became one of the biggest movies of all time.
Even 50 years later, its impact on the film industry is undeniable. Jaws became a favorite film not just for the audience, but it also inspired other filmmakers, with Quentin Tarantino calling Jaws"one of the greatest movies ever made." As the creature feature was re-released in theaters to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Variety reports Jaws defeated two new releases: Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing and Jay Roach's The Roses.

Our look back through the work of Michael Caine brings us to the 1986 thriller, The Whistle Blower, co-starring Nigel Havers.
Michael Caine showed no sign of slowing down as he entered his third decade as a leading man. The 1980s would see him win his first Academy Award (Hannah And Her Sisters), tackle new genres such as horror (The Hand) and shark-based revenge movie (Jaws: The Revenge) whilst continuing to work with interesting new auteurs like Brian De Palma (Dressed To Kill) as well as old friends from classic Hollywood such as John Huston (Escape To Victory).

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest movies ever made, director Steven Spielberg’s classic shark thriller Jaws… and in a couple of years, it will be the 40th anniversary of the last film in the Jaws franchise, one of the most famously bad sequels ever made, Jaws: The Revenge. As awful(ly good) as Jaws: The Revenge may be, it does have its fans. One of those fans happens to be Mike Gencarelli, the owner of Voight-Kampff Productions – and Gencarelli recently announced that he’s planning to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film in 2027 by releasing a documentary called Jaws Goes to the Bahamas. I Know What You Did Last Summer Box Office(Photo Credit –Facebook)
I Know What You Did Last Summer has now limped past a milestone that might be its last. Sony’s horror reboot aimed to ride the wave of nostalgia-fueled franchise revivals and has not quite landed where the studio hoped. Despite the steady home video love the original films earned over the years, and the fact that similar properties like Scream and Final Destination found new energy in recent entries, this one did not click the same way.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Nears $60 Million
It looked promising at first. Sony probably saw dollar signs when they greenlit it, especially considering how much millennials have supported revivals of other early-2000s favorites. However, unlike those successes, this film barely stirred excitement at the box office. Now sitting at just $58.6 million globally, per Box Office Mojo and inching toward $60 million,...

After a lackluster debut a couple of weeks ago, Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer has passed what will likely be its final global box office milestone. The horror reboot isn’t shaping up to be a hit like the recent fifth Scream movie and Final Destination Bloodlines, which revived their respective franchises in grand fashion. Perhaps Sony, which is hungry for IP to exploit, overestimated its worth. On paper, it seemed to be a home run. Like the original Scream and Final Destination movies, I Know What You Did Last Summer has only grown in popularity on home video in the last couple of decades. Plus, millennials turned out in droves to watch Lilo & Stitch.
But they didn’t exactly show up for I Know What You Did Last Summer, which has finally passed the $50 million mark worldwide, and is almost about to touch the $60 million milestone.

It’s mid-summer, the heat is on across the country and — as they’ve been doing for more than 30 years — many of the nation’s TVs are tuned in to… educational programming?
That’s right, it’s Shark Week on Discovery Channel, the massive, annual television event that this year offers 20 new original programs featuring the underwater apex predator.
Now that it’s arguably bigger than ever, one has to ask how Shark Week has endured the storm of cord-cutting and ongoing streaming wars to become a ratings juggernaut and the longest-running cable television event in history?

M3GAN 2.0 has disappointed fans and fizzled out at the box office. While the original feature created a social media frenzy unlike any other and made it one of the profitable horror flicks of the year, the sequel heavily underperformed in equal measure. The movie is produced by horror specialists Jason Blum and James Wan, both of whom were behind M3GAN, as was director Gerard Johnstone. In a new interview, Blum reflected on what went wrong with M3GAN 2.0.
“We all thought M3GAN was like Superman. We could do anything to her,” Blum said on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. The sequel introduces the idea of a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, which is designed to be the ultimate infiltration spy. However, as Amelia, like its predecessor, goes rogue and Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal. Probably the concept did not sit well with fans,...

You’re going to want to get out of the water for this one. This means that not only can you celebrate the milestone moment of one of cinema’s biggest features from the comfort of your own home, but you can do so by way of a bingeable watch party that allows you (and maybe even some friends) to see the story through from start to finish.

Anthony C. Ferrante, who used to write for Fangoria magazine back in the day, has directed twenty feature films over the course of his directing career – and he sure seems to love making shark thrillers. Ferrante was the director behind the over-the-top shark action of Sharknado, and when that movie turned out to be a pop culture sensation he returned to direct all five of the increasingly over-the-top sequels. The franchise wrapped up in 2018… and five years later, Ferrante directed his seventh shark movie, an Asylum production called Blind Waters that was released through the Tubi streaming service. Now, Ferrante has made another shark movie: Great White Waters, which is set to be released by Tubi on July 4th. Happy 50th anniversary Jaws. You are undoubtedly one of not only the greatest summer blockbusters of all time but a landmark horror film that lives on in both its quotable lines and music that nearly everyone will know when heard but also its legacy. While we have covered the series nearly to death in almost every fashion possible, I don’t think we have looked at what it did for the movie world as much as we could. While there are knockoffs that try to directly capitalize on the very name that built the foundation, looking at you Cruel Jaws/Jaws 5, there are so many wonderful copycats that were produced that live on in their own special ways. My plan is to cover a few of them over the next couple months and while there are many to discuss either on the merits of so bad they are good or genuine uniqueness,...

Netflix celebrates 50 years of Jaws by bringing the entire franchise back to streaming this summer, and we’ve learned that all four movies are making their return in less than a month.

It all began with Steven Spielberg’s horror classic in 1975, an adaptation of Peter Benchley’s same-titled novel that has been keeping people out of the water for 50 years now.

Over 23 million people watched Jaws on British TV in 1981. A few thoughts on watching films at an impressionable age – and a call for your experiences.
Steven Spielberg’s shark-infested thrill ride Jaws recently celebrated its 50th anniversary – it was released on the 20th June 1975, to be precise. But as author and podcaster John Bleasdale recently reminded me, a generation of younger people didn’t see it in cinemas – they watched it on TV.
Jaws premiered on UK television on the 8th October 1981 – and according to stats shared by The Daily Jaws, 23.25 million people turned on ITV to watch it. This made it one of the most-watched films ever put on British television – second, in fact, only to the premiere of James Bond outing Live And Let Die, also on ITV. Essentially half of the British population stayed in to watch Jaws that evening, leaving streets, pubs and restaurants largely deserted.

June 20 marks the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s iconic creature feature, Jaws, the first contemporary Hollywood summer blockbuster. One actor, who appeared in 1975’s Jaws as well as Jaws 2, is opening up about what it was like filming a pivotal early scene in Jaws.
Actor Jeffrey Kramer played Deputy Leonard “Jeff” Hendricks in Jaws. His character was the first person on the scene the morning after the first shark attack (not a boat accident) happened. Hendricks recalls his reaction to discovering the remains of a swimmer named Chrissie on the beach that next morning.

Kramer talked to Gold Derby about the scene during which Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) walks toward his deputy, who is looking at the body (parts) in terror. Kramer said that Deputy Hendricks’ reaction sets the tone for the movie and that he is basically like the audience.

How do you follow up a genre-defining, career-making, massively successful cinematic watershed motion picture like "Jaws?" The answer, apparently, is to make a string of sequels that succumb to increasingly diminished returns. While "Jaws 2" is a highly decent yet nowhere near as stellar follow-up that provided essentially more of the same thrills as the original (which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month), "Jaws 3" is rightfully regarded as a massive let-down. Yes, "Jaws 3" is a generally fun, morally prescient time if you take it as a standalone shark thriller movie, but it's still a sad excuse for a sequel to one of the greatest movies ever made. It also begs another, more pressing question: How in the world did this happen?
The answer to that varies with each sequel, of course, and yet there may be a particular circumstance to blame in the case of "Jaws 3.

Stephen Spielberg’s masterpiece, Jaws, turns 50 this month. It’s an important benchmark in film history and made its way onto our list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. We’re celebrating Bruce the Shark’s birthday by ranking the entire franchise. This is unquestionably the easiest ranking I’ve ever taken on. There’s no denying which film will be first, and it’s fairly obvious which one will be last.
4. Jaws: The Revenge (1987) Directed by Joseph Sargent
The original Jaws was a film that didn’t require a sequel, it was a perfect standalone story of man vs. beast with a satisfying ending. But it really didn’t need this sequel. Jaws: The Revenge is not only the worst movie in the franchise, but it’s also one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The plot is lunacy. Featuring Ellen Brody, Chief Brody’s wife,...

A new horror movie has earned a 0% score during its Rotten Tomatoes debut. Like any genre, horror tends to have major critical ups and downs. While many entries in the genre are well-respected classics with stellar reviews, including 2017's Get Out (which has a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes), 1991's The Silence of the Lambs (95%), 1975's Jaws (97%), and 1960's Psycho (97%), others have been widely lambasted, including 1987's Jaws: The Revenge (2%), 2002's FeardotCom (3%), and 2022's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (3%).
However, early 2025 has been a fertile period for horror movies that are both critically and commercially successful. While April and May have seen the most success, three of the Top 20 highest-grossing movies of 2025 in general are entries in the genre, namely February's The Monkey (which has a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score and grossed $68.6 million worldwide against a reported budget of $11 million), May's Final Destination: Bloodlines, and April's Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror" has been darkly interrogating our relationship with media and technology since 2011, and since we're more into our screens than ever, it stands to reason that this show, which is essentially "The Twilight Zone" for our times, is more disturbingly relevant than ever.
A veteran gamer who got his start as a reviewer for the magazine PC Zone, Brooker takes the video game medium seriously. He's far from a scold as far as gaming is concerned, but he does have piercing insight into the ways in which people can become unhealthily obsessed with these virtual environments. We can grow irritated when a game throws a particularly difficult mission or seemingly unbeatable boss level in front of us, yet we get so attached to avatars or characters that it feels like a death in the family when/if they expire.

Stephen Spielberg's "Jaws" created the summer blockbuster in 1975. Taking over movie theaters across the world and traumatizing an entire generation, it forced people everywhere to think twice before stepping into the ocean (lest they become shark food).
The story of one town slowly unraveling as it's beset by a hungry human-eating great white shark terrified audiences with its spectacular photography, ominous score, and endearing performances. It also made Spielberg a household name and has, across the span of 50 years, grossed over $484 million at the box office thanks to its initial run and subsequent theatrical revival screenings.
With such ripping success, sequels were inevitably going to happen, and Universal Pictures was happy to throw chum into the water, giving audiences three more shark-infested films. They are as follows:
"Jaws" (1975) "Jaws 2" (1978) "Jaws 3" aka "Jaws 3D" (1983) "Jaws: The Revenge" (1987)
Unfortunately, none of these "Jaws" sequels ever get close to the magic of Spielberg's original,...

Look, actors have to eat too, and all the arthouse and award season favorite projects they do aren't always going to pay the bills. To put it simply, just as we all do jobs that we don't necessarily feel personally invested in, actors can also take on work primarily for the associated salary. This distinction doesn't take away from the work itself, and certainly doesn't diminish our own feelings for it, but it serves as an amusing reminder of the value of the dollar. If anything, it helps humanize the actors involved with the knowledge that they too have to make their own ends meet.
Whether it's celebrated, award-winning actors or beloved character actors looking for the next project, regardless of the material, all actors play a role only for the money in their career. Many of these actors have been forthcoming about their primary motivation for joining a project,...

After a couple of iffy choices earlier in the decade, Michael Caine made the surprisingly sweet and enjoyable comedy, Sweet Liberty in 1986. We take a look back…
Michael Caine showed no sign of slowing down as he entered his third decade as a leading man.
Film by film, I’ll be taking a look at Caine’s 1980s filmography to see what hidden gems I can unearth alongside the more familiar classics…
Spoilers for Sweet Liberty lie ahead…
Directed by: Alan Alda
Tagline: Alan Alda’s hit comedy about life, liberties and the pursuit of happiness.

In 1975, Universal Pictures released a film that would impact the movie industry forever. Titled Jaws, it was directed by a relatively new filmmaker by the name of Steven Spielberg, who had landed the gig when producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown found themselves without a director for the exciting project about the aquatic monster. 50 years later, its legacy remains unquestionable, and TCM, Universal Pictures, and more, plan to throw the 50th birthday bash Jaws deserves.
As reported by Bloody Disgusting, this summer, modern viewers will get the chance to revisit Spielberg's groundbreaking movie. Jaws will return to theaters for the TCM Classic Film Festival in April. However, this won't be the only 50th anniversary presentation, as Universal is planning a nationwide re-release of the movie from Aug. 29 through Sept. 4.

Winning an Oscar is supposed to be the pinnacle, right? The ultimate stamp of approval, the golden ticket to prestige projects and paychecks. But how could it ever be that simple? There’s a long history of actors who, after basking in the glow of their Academy Award moment, have suddenly found themselves struggling to land roles, battling weird industry backlash, or – if they happen to be a woman – being deemed “too difficult” overnight.
Some just call it the Oscar curse, because Hollywood loves to anoint a star, but it also loves to tear one down. Having said that, there’s a rare breed of actors who not only win an Oscar but do it again. And again. So who are these titans of the Academy, the actors who didn’t just win but kept winning?

Jaws, the 1975 nail-biter, made a shark a Hollywood star. It had anticipation, action, and the legendary line: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” That line wasn’t even scripted! It was an on-the-spot gem from the chaotic mess behind the scenes.
The film was a shipwreck of problems, from broken sharks to water chaos. Yet, the crew spun disaster into cinematic magic. And that line? Not just a joke—it nailed the terror of a massive great white. Outlandish how one off-the-cuff gag became a pure Hollywood legend.
You’ve likely heard the line, even if you’ve never seen Jaws. It’s been quoted, parodied, and referenced everywhere — from TV shows to memes.
But the line’s true intensity lies in its relatability. Who hasn’t had a moment where they felt thoroughly impromptu? Jaws went on to become the first true summer blockbuster, changing Hollywood evermore.

Back to the Future Part II takes the franchise ahead to 2015, and although the movie didn't predict the future with complete accuracy, there was a specific piece of foreshadowing that came eerily close. The first Back to the Future sequel actually got several things right about 2015, despite being released in 1989. However, there is one piece of the movie's lore that resonated particularly well with viewers, and the prediction was pretty much fulfilled in the real world in 2002.

When an actor stars in a film, their promotional responsibilities are often written into their contracts. They have to appear on talk shows or post about the film on their social media accounts ... or even just not say anything bad about the production, no matter how the film turns out.
With the benefit of time, though, many actors look back on their work and want to let fans know that they were just as disappointed as we were. An actor trashing their own movie lets us know that they're human just like the rest of us, and that they too can tell when something just didn't work. It can also make for a great press anecdote. Take Dennis Hopper, for example, who told The A.V. Club that his son once asked him why he bothered to star in "Super Mario Bros." The "Easy Rider" star recalled telling his son, 'Well,...

Horror franchises have continued to dominate the genre, often overshadowing new releases that do not have a connection to a well-known and popular series. Many of these franchises have a mix of good and bad movies, including icons like Halloween, Alien, Saw, and The Conjuring. These titles have had enough success to overshadow the lackluster installments, even if they're known for only one or two major films that keep the series alive.
Other horror franchises in the genre have not withstood the test of time or kept viewers interested in more bad installments than good or even decent ones. Series like Puppet Master and Paranormal Activity may have a cult following, but the overall critical and audience reception is exceptionally poor. Despite having multiple sequels, these horror series only have one distinguishable film.
Jaws (1975-1987) Should Have Never Been A Series
Steven Spielberg's Jaws is the most monumental creature feature and shark movie ever.

Our odyssey through the work of Michael Caine reaches a grim nadir: the 1984 comedy Blame It On Rio. Brace yourselves, readers.
Film by film, I’ll be taking a look at Caine’s 1980s filmography to see what hidden gems I can unearth alongside the more familiar classics…
Spoilers for Blame it on Rio lay ahead…

Stanley Donen

While the fourth installment in the Jaws franchise, Jaws: The Revenge, may not have been well-received by critics or fans, one of its stars says he isnt mad about having been in the film, which has a 2% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sir Michael Caine, in an excerpt from his new memoir, Dont Look Back, Youll Trip Over My Guide to Life, published in The Times, talked a bit about the 1987 film.
When people say to me, That was the worst film Ive ever seen! Id say, Probably, but it paid for a beautiful house for my mother, so whats your problem? Caine writes in his book. The movie didn't seem to hurt Caine's career, as he went on to win two Oscars and starred in films like The Dark Knight trilogy, The Prestige, Inception, and Now You See Me.

Oliver Stone has rewatched all four Jaws films – but it’s 1987’s Jaws: The Revenge that he’s keen to defend.
There aren’t too many people willing to stand up and take one for the team where 1987’s Jaws: The Revenge is concerned, but you can now count multiple Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone among them.
To this point, the most talked-about part of the fourth and thus-far final Jaws movie is Michael Caine’s oft-told story. It’s the one where he revealed that he’d never seen the film itself, but he had very much seen and enjoyed the house that it paid for.
Oliver Stone has been active on his Facebook page of late, with pages of thoughts on assorted movies. And he’s told how over the summer, he treated himself to a viewing of all four Jaws films. “In my shark fever, I particularly enjoyed...

For as long as movies have been around, there have been good ones, bad ones, and everything in between. That goes double for cheesy movies, and no period better-personified schmaltz in cinema than the 1980s, a decade during which Hollywood produced a seemingly endless line-up of drivel so bad, it often couldn't help but be good.
80s cinema created a series of classic films, including The Shining, The Untouchables, and Blade Runner. Still, for every one of those films, ten other movies tried to reach as broad a market as possible and fell flat on their faces in the process. Some of those movies had their tongues so firmly planted in their proverbial cheeks that they turned into guilty pleasures nonetheless. Others did not.

A couple of months ago, Jaws 3D (as well as Jaws: The Revenge) was released on 4K Ultra HD, but the release came under fire because it appears that some fairly aggressive AI was used to help restore the movie. Owing to the 3D process used to film the movie—which divided a 35mm film frame in half along the middle—Jaws 3D has never been the best-looking movie on home media. The film has always had a great deal of grain and some frame distortion, but the AI processing has smoothed things over just a little too much, as well as turning the background characters into rather horrifying creatures. We dig into the 4K release in the video embedded above, and you can also see some images of the AI upscales in the embeds below:
If these screen grabs from reddit are true, then the Jaws 3 and 4K Uhd's are just AI upscales.
