Mad Men (2007)
Is a Good Wife Smackdown Coming? Missing Mad Betty? Castle's Mom Too Catty? And More TV Qs!
Mad Men (2007)
We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, here are some queries we’re going to lob at you, from shows including Nikita, Mad Men, The Good Wife, Once Upon a Time and Cougar Town!

1 | The best part of last week’s Supernatural: The fantastic Castiel flashback montage or Sam in a white shirt for an entire hour?

2 | What did everyone think of the way Nikita (finally!) solved the Cassandra “problem”? Did she get off way too easy? And will anyone (besides Michael) actually miss little Max?

3 | Could it really be...

Into The Deep End: Photos from Series Premiere
On January 21, ABC will attempt to combine The Good Wife with Grey's Anatomy, as The Deep End focuses on first-year associates at a prestigous Los Angeles firm.

These young, attractive lawyers will be thrown into both the courtroom and the bedroom. What can viewers expect on the series premiere?

Dylan is handed a challenging pro bono custody case; Beth deals with a 90-year-old man that thinks she's his daughter; Liam attempts to sign a client under false pretenses; and Addy finally stands up to her boss.

Twilight Saga star Rachelle Lefevre also guest stars on the episode. To get an early look at The Deep End cast in action, click on the following photos, all courtesy of the show's January 21 debut:...

TV Fanatic Mid-Season Report Card: Glee
We must face the sad truth: every single primetime show is on hiatus until 2010. Before the calendar turns, however, let's take a look back.

So far, the TV Fanatic staff has reviewed the ups and downs of The Vampire Diaries, 90210, House, Heroes, NCIS and The Good Wife in our mid-season report cards.

In this edition: Glee.

Best character: Kurt. This was a close call. But while Sue Sylvester utters our the funniest Glee quotes, she doesn't sing. Conversely, we can typically rely on Kurt for a great one-liner and a great note or two dozen during one of the show's countless musical numbers. He was also the focus of our favorite episode so far, "Preggers."

Worst character: Terri. This isn't Jessalyn Gilsig's fault. Her character was simply given grating material. Now that the fake pregnancy storyline has ended, perhaps Terri can return to simply being neurotic and somewhat entertaining.

The Good Wife Episode Stills from "Painkillers"
After taking a break for the holidays, The Good Wife returns with a new episode on January 5.

What will go down on the episode titled "Painkillers?" Here's a quick look ahead:

Alicia represents the doctor of a high school quarterback that dies from a painkiller overdose; Jackie ends up in the hospital; Peter receives news that makes him quite angry.

As usual, we'll recap and review the episode after it airs. For now, get an early look at a few scenes from it, courtesy of the photos below:...

Best character: Ella Simms. This is not simply because she wears low-cut dresses and, as proven last episode, black lingerie. Katie Cassidy has taken the bitchy baton from Heather Locklear and run with is like Usain Bolt. The show has still managed to depict a soft side to Ella, however, as her feelings for Jonah appear to be actually sincere. We're excited to watch these two as a couple next month.

Worst character: Violet Foster. She's played by Ashlee Simpson. Need we say more? Fortunately, this "actress" won't be a member of the...

2009 TV Year in Review
You know, for all the bitching we do, 2009 was a pretty fantastic TV year. Sure, it threw up the "Jersey Shore" (bringing back severe childhood nightmares for some of us), stuffed more Heidi and Spencer down our throats, and tried to convince us that "Flash Forward" was something other than dumbed-down science fiction at its worst. But every year has its filth and dregs, and if you were willing to take a deep breath and dive into the murky sludge, there were actually quite a few good pearls waiting for you at the bottom.

Take "Lost," for example. While there's some minority dissent, most would agree that 2009 started off with the show delivering a strong penultimate season, perhaps its best season yet. It was an engrossing arc of television, doing service to both the characters and the overarching mythology, all while quietly turning unsuspecting TV viewers into fans of a...

The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations are Here
Photo: Screen Actors Guild Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.

First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.

The other nominations causing me to scratch my head...

Hot on the heels of this week's Golden Globe nominations, Hollywood woke up Thursday to more honors - with the announcement of the Screen Actors Guild Award nominees - which brought some obvious choices as well as a few surprises among the names from big screen and small. The Good Wife Review: "Lifeguard"
This episode of The Good Wife was a great showcase for the entire cast.

What began as a seemingly simple case for Alicia led to the discovery that a judge, and long-time friend of Will's, was as corrupt as they come. This storyline was set against an offer made to Diane to leave the firm and become a judge.

Read our recap of "Lifeguard" to fully understand how every character at the firm intersected on this case.

The installment highlighted every positive aspect of The Good Wife, most notably its solid cast, straightforward storytelling and mature point of view. There are no special effects here, no dumbing down of plots for the audience, no need for surprise endings.

There are simply solid stories and slow character build-up. There are also realistic relationships. Will and Diane, for instance, are clearly not good friends. But there's a healthy amount of respect there...

TV ratings: 'NCIS,' CBS blow away Tuesday competition
Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009

CBS got one more night of its regular Tuesday lineup on the air, and the result was one of the network's biggest ratings wins of the season.

"NCIS" et al brought 17.3 million viewers and a 10.8 rating/18 share in households to CBS for the night, beating its closest competitor by more than 10 million viewers (yep, 10 million). NBC (6.4 million, 3.9/6) was the best of the also-rans, beating out Fox (5.2 million, 3.2/5). ABC came in fourth with 4.5 million viewers and a 2.8/5, and The CW (1.4 million, 1.0/2) trailed with a night of reruns.

CBS also led among adults 18-49, but not by nearly as wide a margin. It scored a 3.6 rating in the demographic to beat NBC's 2.3. Fox took third at 2.0, followed by ABC, 1.6, and The CW, 0.6.

Pajiba After Dark 12/15/09
I just finished my last final and I did super well on it, and decided to come straight home and write tonight's Pajiba After Dark before I got deeply into the pre-flight business of cleaning and packing (read: drinking) and got distracted. Obviously there's relief that the semester is over, but also a kind of bittersweetness that I'm not going to see my friends here for nearly a month. It's something I'll be reflecting on this evening (that's a lie, I'll be at an '80s party drinking) while perhaps enjoying a sedate glass of red wine (water bottle full of margaritas) and enjoying some television (there's nothing good on tonight unless you watch "So You Think You Can Dance" or maybe "Better Off Ted"). Tomorrow I'll be returning home to Maryland, and while I'll be regretful about all the things I'm leaving behind in Miami (read: hungover) I'll also...

List of the 2010 Golden Globe Award Nominees
Photo: Hollywood Foreign Press Association The nominations are in for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards and the leader at the moment is Up In the Air with six nominations, followed by Nine with five and Inglourious Basterds and Avatar both earning four nominations each. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me personally is the absence of In the Loop in the Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) category as well as Peter Capaldi not getting a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nomination. It's a great film and this was really it's only chance and it has come up empty.

As far as nominated surprises go, Tobey Maguire getting a Best Actor (Drama) nom for Brothers is surprising, but at the same time it is well-deserved (even if I think Jake Gyllenhaal had the best performance in that flick). Coen brothers fans will be happy to see Michael Stuhlbarg getting a nomination for A Serious Man...

I feel a little like the Writers Guild Award nominees, announced yesterday, were downloaded directly from my own brain. Or at least my DVR list. And knowing what I know about what shows PopWatchers tend to get all message-boardy about, I'm guessing you feel the same. There in the drama category are Breaking Bad, Dexter, Friday Night Lights (pictured), Lost, and Mad Men. In comedy we have 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, Modern Family, and The Office. And as if all that weren't enough, we have the new series category: Glee, Modern Family, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie, and Hung.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominations this morning for the 67th annual Golden Globes Awards. "Up in the Air" received six nominations including Best Picture, Drama, while "Nine" received five noms including Best Picture, Comedy (huh? "Nine" is definitely Not a comedy!).

"Avatar," "Inglourious Basterds," "The Hurt Locker," and "Precious" are also Best Picture, Drama contenders, while "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover," "It's Complicated," "Julie and Julia" complete the Best Picture, Comedy list.

Sandra Bullock received two acting nominations. One for drama for "The Blind Side" and one for comedy for "The Proposal." She's really having a terrific year!

Meryl Streep is also having a terrific year. She's a double contender for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical for "Julie and Julia" and "It's Complicated."

I enjoyed "Nine," but didn't love it, and I suspect many voters felt the same. The nominees from the film are certainly deserving especially Marion Cotillard (Best Actress,...

Despite being a newbie, "Modern Family" will give a heavy competition for older shows. The half-hour comedy series nabs three nominations from 2010 Writers Guild Awards, the same amount that "Mad Men", "30 Rock" and "The Office" get.

"Modern" is to fight for Best Comedy category with "Office" and "30 Rock" in addition to "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and fellow newcomer "Glee". The pilot has also helped "Modern" in scoring a nomination for Episodic Comedy which again lists "30 Rock" and "Office". For being new, "Modern" is put under Best New Series along with "Glee", "The Good Wife", "Hung" and "Nurse Jackie".

Meanwhile, "Mad Men" is a dominator of the drama series, taking in Best Drama nomination and two Episodic Drama nods. Other drama competitors include "Lost", "Dexter", "True Blood" and "Friday Night Lights".

The biggest surprise of all is the inclusion of HBO's low-profile comedy "Eastbound & Down" in the Episodic category. Moreover, "The Simpsons...

'Glee,' 'Modern Family' break through with Writers Guild
Several usual suspects -- "30 Rock," "Mad Men," "The Office," "The Simpsons" -- picked up multiple nominations for the 2010 Writers Guild of America Awards -- but a couple of new shows broke through too.

"Glee" and "Modern Family" are both up for best comedy and best new series at the guild's awards, which will be presented Feb. 20. "Modern Family" also picked up an episodic comedy nomination for its pilot, written by series creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd.

The other comedy series nominees are "30 Rock," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Office." For drama series, the contenders are "Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Lost" and "Mad Men." Someone from "The Simpsons" will win in the animation category, as its writers swept all five nominations.

Below is a partial list of the nominees in the TV and radio categories (movie nominations will be announced later). The complete list is at WGA.org.

Ratings: NBC feasts on 'Biggest Loser' finale
Alison Sweeney, Rudy Pauls, Danny Cahill, and Amanda Arlauskas in The Biggest Loser (2004)
The season finale of NBC's The Biggest Loser was Tuesday night's big winner -- it earned an extremely high Adults 18-49 rating of 5.0, and its average viewership grew a whopping 24 percent over the course of two hours. As a result, the network's 10 p.m. offering, The Jay Leno Show, enjoyed its highest viewership in weeks. And yet! CBS drew in the highest average viewership for the night with its slate of repeats. The return of ABC's Better Off Ted performed poorly -- that funny show cannot catch a break. In what universe does Portia de Rossi plus genetic engineering not equal funny?...

TV ratings: CBS holds off 'Biggest Loser' finale Tuesday
Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009

The finale of "The Biggest Loser" scored strong numbers for NBC Tuesday and lifted "The Jay Leno Show" to its biggest audience in months. That still wasn't quite enough, however, to move NBC past CBS in the overall ratings.

CBS averaged 12.1 million viewers and a 7.8 rating/13 share in households for the night, just beating NBC's 11.75 million and 7.2/12. ABC (6.9 million, 3.9/6) came in third. Fox (6.2 million, 3.8/6) took fourth, and The CW (1.6 million, 1.1/2) was in its usual spot at the back of the pack.

NBC led the adults 18-49 demographic by a wide margin, scoring a 4.3 rating. ABC, CBS and Fox finished in a three-way tie for second at 2.4. The CW managed only a 0.8.

Tuesday hour by hour:

8 p.m.

CBS: "NCIS" rerun (15 million viewers, 9.5/15 households)

NBC: "The Biggest Loser" season finale (12.2 million, 7.4/11)

ABC: Specials - "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (11.3 million, 5.8/9)/"Disney Prep & Landing" (12.1 million, 5.9/9)

Fox: "So You Think You Can Dance...

Christine Baranski and Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory (2007)
First Look: 'Big Bang Theory' hooks up Sheldon and Leonard's mother!
Christine Baranski and Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory (2007)
Hate to say "I told you so," but… Wait. No. I love to say "I told you so." And I did! I totally hinted at a future hook-up between Big Bang Theory brainiacs Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard's mother, Beverly (The Good Wife's Christine Baranski), and see? On Monday's episode, "The Maternal Congruence," it's happening. At least that's the conclusion I'm drawing from the (possibly misleading) exclusive image above. Oh, don't pretend you're as shocked as Penny (Kaley Cuoco) looks. You saw the sparks flying last time, too. Timing for the return of the thinking man's cougar couldn't be better,...

During the week ending Nov. 29, when ABC's reality juggernaut Dancing with the Stars crowned its big winner (that'd be Donny Osmond), the series also finally landed itself on top for the first time this season. The Monday performance episode was the top audience-draw of the week on the broadcast networks, pulling in 20.4 million pairs of eyes—right above that of usual top show, CBS' NCIS, which attracted 20.3 million viewers. Dancing's results episode on Tuesday—the bloated, two-hour event that actually awarded Osmond the mirrored trophy—came in at No. 3 with 19.3 million viewers. Rounding out the Top 5 were NBC's always-strong Sunday Night Football at No.

Ratings: 'Dancing' finale hits season highs for ABC
Donny Osmond, Mya, and Kym Johnson Herjavec in Dancing with the Stars (2005)
Thanks to a two-hour Dancing With the Stars finale (meaning no new episode of The Forgotten to drag down numbers) , ABC earned its highest Tuesday numbers for the fall season in both total viewers and Adults 18-49. At 8 p.m., V held steady from last week in both areas. The three-hour lineup was enough to give ABC an edge over CBS for the night, despite strong showings as usual for NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles. CBS' freshman drama The Good Wife maintained all of its audience from last week, and even rose 8 percent from last week's showing in Adults 18-...

After weeks that saw the World Series on Fox and then NBC's Sunday Night Football top the broadcast ratings for the week, a scripted show—specifically, CBS' powerhouse NCIS—was champion again for the week ending Nov. 22, after dominating for the first five weeks of the season. The Tuesday evening procedural starring Mark Harmon drew 20.3 million viewers, a full 1.5 million over the Monday edition of ABC's Dancing with the Stars, which came in second place with 18.8 million viewers. NBC's Sunday Night Football, which always performs strongly, showed up at No. 3, grabbing 17.3 million viewers for the showdown that saw the Philadelphia...

The Good Wife: Casting for Kalinda's Lover
On The Good Wife, the character of Kalinda has only been featured in spurts.

Perhaps this is because she doesn't have a famous husband in jail for using state funds to sleep with prostitutes.

Kalinda will soon have a new man in her life, however, as producers are casting for an easily-angered police detective that gets involved with the firm's investigator.

The recurring character will be named Ryan. Not much is known about him at the moment, except for this: he ends up owing Kalinda a favor; and sleeping with her.

The Good Wife Review: "Unprepared"
This week's episode of The Good Wife prompts us to ask readers a question:

Would you prefer if the show focused more on its legal procederual side, or its mystery side? The installment "Unprepared" dealt mostly with the latter.

Sure, Alicia and the firm defended a client accused of setting arson to her lab, but the case played second fiddle to Peter's bond hearing and the growing conspiracy against him.

While these storylines have always played a role on The Good Wife, they've never been featured so prominently on a single episode. On one hand, we're intrigued by who is setting Peter up, for what purpose and what will be the fallout for all involved.

On the other hand, The Good Wife has grown into a solid, simple procedural. We've enjoyed the added element of Alicia's unique position and the sprinkling of hints here and there surrounding Peter's past/future.

NBC's Sunday Night Football franchise—which saw New England take on Indianapolis this past weekend—was on the top of the weekly ratings chart for the broadcast networks for the week ending Nov. 15, drawing 22.4 million viewers to watch the pigskin showdown. But the overall winner on the Top 20? Without question: CBS, which served up 12 of the shows in the Top 20. The No. 2 spot went to the high-performing network, as TV's top scripted show, NCIS, drew 21.0 million viewers. ABC's Dancing with the Stars was still strong, though, and landed at No. 3, with a still-distant-from-ncis 17.6 million viewers. The rest of the Top 20, however,...
