After fourteen years, on October 5th 2011, the film was released for the first time on home video in its home country of Australia with a DVD release from Umbrella Entertainment. The company later released a Blu-Ray edition in 2017. The film prior to this time had only had a few limited individual screenings in Australia such as one organized by Quentin Tarantino in 2009 in Sydney.
John Jarratt got to take the hat he had worn in 'We Of The Never Never' (1982) and wear it again in this movie.
The long delay of the film being released in its home country was apparently due to Avco Embassy owning the Australian distribution rights, but having gone out of business just prior to the film's release.
Of the mechanical crocodile, actor John Jarratt says on the film's audio-commentary, which is reiterated in his 'Not Quite Hollywood' extended interview as well, that ''they put a couple of sticks into a crocodile's head, and we called it 'croc on a stick', and got that snapping under the water, until poor old Numunwari finally came back and started to move properly. . . we called Numaunwari 'Chris' for awhile, 'Chris the croc', and then when the art department came up with the croc on the stick, we called him 'Christ, our saviour'.''
