A Bit Of Campy Enjoyment

The plot is a bit far-fetched, especially finding the three main characters were never infected despite having been in close contact with some many others that were, and badly dated. The characters are interesting but the actors were unseasoned and the performances were not worthy of Oscar contention. Some of the effects, both on-screen and on the soundtrack, were sometimes interesting and some of the scenes were very original, especially the opening scene involving the dogs. There was a lot of lag time in my opinion. In places, the movie could have moved on a little faster, but in others it was worthy of attention. I watched this movie as my attention was focused on a bit of paperwork, but at times, I was compelled to fix my eyes on the screen. It is not one I would suggest buying on DVD or even renting from Netflix, but it was showing on the MGMHD channel. If you run across it on your TV schedule and find there is nothing else to watch, you might find a bit of enjoyment in watching this film, but if CashCab is playing on the Discovery Channel, you should watch it instead. I'd put this one on the level with most of the movies you find premiering on the SciFi Channel.

Strangely horrible vacation.

Three American students Damon, Michael and Samantha are on vacation in their RV in Spain. But it's far from relaxing, when everyone they encounter in the sleepy village seems to be acting weird and they come across a NASA scientist who claims the town has been infected by aliens, and soon they would follow the same fate. The only cure is found in a secret underground storage depot, and time is running out for them.

The idea was there, however the money wasn't and the execution could use a finer tune up. Writer / Director Deran Sarafian's film "The Falling" AKA "Alien Predator" seems to cop a real shellacking, however I didn't mind it. I don't think it was the pits, but there's no way this trash is good either. Due to its limited scope, everything looks kind of bare, but I thought it was well conceived to keep it taut, claustrophobic and very foreboding. The Spanish countryside perfectly presented an eerie and isolated air. Everything seems to be building on mood and atmosphere, maybe not on purpose but the stark photography, dim lighting and the infectiously dreary score lend to it largely. However there's no denying how inane and silly this outing eventually turns out to be, especially after some effective build-ups (like the opening to the film). The fragmented story is a complete mess and truly baffling. It has many sub-plots to feed off, but very little sees daylight. Yeah, certain things had me going "What on earth?" quite a bit. Sometimes it would seem to stall too much that you end up wishing a little more did happen, and the haggard script can get rather overbearing. This goes for the token romance mush. What's really unconvincing has got to be the rubber beasties (at first you think it might be a virus/parasite) that finally make it in towards the end, but before that lousy letdown the potent gore FX leading up to it comes off really well with its grisly splatter. Sarafin's direction is very downbeat, with some minor flourishes of imagination and dumb jolts. The conclusion was a neat touch. Dennis Christopher, Martin Hewitt and the perky Lynn-Holly Johnson were surprisingly enjoyable, if quite overstated with the flimsy characters. Luis Prendes is unintentionally laughable due to how seriously deadpan he goes about his NASA scientist. A real no brain, low budget helping… oh yeah. The final product could've been far worse though. Or am I getting soft?

Great 80s cheese

Seen this as a kid in the 80s. NO one believed me there was a movie called Alien Preditors. Thought I was making it up. Thank god for google. Even though the kids who said I was full of crap will never read this Im just gonna say after all these years..Here it is. Suck it. Oh and the movie is cheesy as hell...I'd still watch it again and again though. Out of spite mostly now. Kids on vacation in Spain come across some old lab that fell from space that contained a little monster. It infects the locals and terror ensues. If you like monster,80s horror with a slice of science fiction thrown in, you'll love this movie. Has the 80s gore we all love and miss and just enough plot to follow but not enough to make too much sense.

The Falling

Two guys and a girl are on vacation in Spain. On their way to Madrid, they run across the small town of Duarte, where a Skylab fell four years prior. Unfortunately, microbes from the station didn't burn up upon re-entry as originally assumed. The townspeople are being infected by the alien microbes, turning into deranged, beer throwing hosts for alien predators.

Fun film is a bit slower going than you'd expect, spending time on the characters' love triangle. Highlights? We briefly meet a family including a guy who sounds like a Three Stooges reject. There's a groovy scene with a masked wacko and a big truck that tends to teleport. There's also a smartass bearded guy who's awesome and isn't in the film nearly as long as he should be. You don't see much of the creatures themselves, but when they appear, the effects are good. Think the chestburster from Alien with spider legs.

Bottom of the barrel

I've seen a lot of bad movies, but this ranks near the bottom of them all. Sometimes obscure low budget movies can be quite entertaining, such as "Time Walker" and "Star Crash", but this film is just plain boring. The alien in the title has about 45 seconds of screen time total, and when it finally does show itself it isn't even very threatening. The rest of the film is slow and poorly acted, and sometimes just doesn't make much sense. Even the guys at MST3K would be hard pressed to make this one interesting. Avoid at all costs.

Hot Alien Mess

Something to do with aliens, NASA and a dune buggy in Spain. All I know for sure is that I was bored.

Lacks tension or mystery or fun. There is a killer truck that's more worthy of its own movie than the alien mess.

Where's Sigourney or Schwarzenegger when you need them? Nowhere near this slop, that's for sure. The alien was cute though.

I've seen worse.

I was able to sit through the entire film, something I couldn't do for other B films. There were so many bad aspects of this film, like the overacting and the plot. The pros were some location shots of Spain, mid 1980's fashion and a great gas explosion so good they used it twice. As this was my first and last viewing of "Alien Predator" or "The Falling", I can say, I was hoping for a twisted ending. Like, the alien only hunts and kills bad actors paving the way for a new generation of super actors in B films- No Spoilers. Dennis Christopher as Damon was hyper irritating. Lynn-Holly Johnson's Samantha is beautiful, but reminded me of an anime come to life and Martin Hewitt's character, Michael, could have read his part from a script throughout this film, without affecting the viewing at all. Seriously, Hewitt could have had a script in each scene, reading his lines and if anything, it would have improved the movie. This film should be shown at all acting, directing and editing schools so that maybe, we'll get better B movies in the future.

One of the worst films ever.

This is a disgrace to the words "Alien" and "Predator".

Useless plot. Terrible dialogue. Atrocious acting. What special effects? Wouldn't scare a kitten!

Avoid this like the plague.

Decent sci-fi horror with a bit of grue.

The young American tourists in Spain encounter lethal alien lifeforms that were brought to Earth by Apollo 14 then tested on animals aboard SkyLab.But SkyLab has now crashed to Earth and the aliens have survived, infect the locals and messily killing them. The trio of young people pick up a NASA scientist who has to get an antidote to a nearby laboratory."Alien Predator" was one of the very first horror films I have seen as the kid. That's why I can't give it a negative rating, even though the pace is lethargic and the gore is kept to minimum. However the film is suitably dark and atmospheric and offers a few creepy moments. The acting is decent and the characters are likeable.6 out of 10.

Just tolerable

Derivative, dark, dull sci-fi thriller that can't breathe any life into its tired cliches, and moves ever-so-slowly to boot. However, there is a pretty cool head-explosion scene and a nicely understated ending. Not really the worst of its type, but not very good, either. (*1/2)

Starts out well, but falls over . . .

Sometimes reputed as the sequel to 'The Thing', and most certainly much suggests this after viewing, but as I can't substantiate this, I will say at the very least it's a seminal followup.

Things start out well, with three American friends on a road trip to Spain, when some weird goings on starts to take place. The scenic photography here is nicely shot, and adds an interesting flavour to the proceedings. For the first half, the film doesn't take itself too seriously, and there are a lot of very funny moments, thanks to the sharp script, and appealing leads. However, In stark contrast to this, later the film metamorphoses in tone, and turns somewhat sombrely, with gruesome make-up effects, shock tactics, and so on.

I admit, I quite like this flick, and have revisited it several times. But, in my opinion, the inconsistent tone stops it from being great, as this is genuinely entertaining initially, but when the horror cliché's kick in, your interest wains, and things ultimately get a bit, well, dull. Still, remains worthwhile viewing.

In space, no-one's got time to bleed.

No prizes for guessing which two Hollywood blockbusters of the '80s inspired the title for this schlocky B-movie (clue: it's not Tootsie and Ghostbusters, although Tootsie Ghostbusters is a great name for a band). Unfortunately, the title is about as close as Alien Predator comes to either Ridley Scott's sci-fi/horror masterpiece or Arnie's testosterone-fuelled action classic: it's a shoddy mess that rarely makes sense, with characters that will test the patience of even the most forgiving of viewers, and not nearly enough in the way of 'alien predators' (unless you count a couple of really shonky spider-like puppets).

The film's main characters are friends Damon (Dennis Christopher), Michael (Martin Hewitt) and Samantha (Lynn-Holly Johnson), whose European vacation takes an unexpected turn when they visit the Spanish town of Duarte, where an alien microbe - brought to Earth when Skylab fell out of the sky - is infecting the locals. With help from NASA scientist Dr. Tracer (Luis Prendes), the three friends attempt to destroy the aliens, come up with an antidote, escape from the infected townsfolk, and resume their road-trip through Spain.

According to IMDb's trivia, director Deran Sarafian intention was to mimic the humour of An American Werewolf in London, with chirpy banter between the two male leads, both of whom are vying for the affection of Samantha. To say that Sarafian failed is an understatement: Damon comes across as a thoroughly annoying jerk, while Michael is simply bland, and their quips feel forced and unfunny. Lynn-Holly Johnson looks great, but she's a terrible actress and also grates on the nerves (there's not even a shower scene to compensate).

Sarafian's inability to successfully emulate John Landis's brand of comedy/horror also results in some truly bizarre 'WTF?' moments that have to be seen to be believed: a weird waitress's hair suddenly frizzes into a giant mess; a mysterious truck inexplicably crushes a man in a creepy mask; there's a flying doll (called Talking Tina) with chicken legs; and a FIAT chases Michael in his buggy in what must be some of the least exciting stunt driving committed to film (despite Michael's claim to be Hollywood's number one driver).

Just occasionally, the film manages to deliver the goods - a dog being pulled into the carcass of a dead bull is delightfully daft, a lumpy corpse is cut open with sufficiently gloopy results, a creature erupts from a man's face in a welter of goo - but these scenes only serve to highlight just how terrible the rest of the movie is.

3.5 out fo 10, rounded down to 3 for using the same explosion twice and hoping that the viewer won't notice, and for spelling FX guy Mark Shostrom's name wrong in the end credits.

Pretty Forgettable Science Fiction (But Nice Gore)

The plot: Three friends encounter a malevolent alien after driving in an RV and a field of cattle die from some sort of bloody infection.

I must say, the cow corpses are pretty nasty for those who do not like to see raw meat. And the blood and gore in this film in general is pretty decent, definitely something worth checking out if you are into that.

I think the one guy does a great Rod Serling impression, and later they run into a Talky Tina doll. Someone clearly loved "Twilight Zone"...

The Indian family was very weird, not unlike the guy from "Short Circuit". I am amused by how non-Indian the daughter looks compared to her parents.

Martin Hewitt shows no skin...

Amazing that actors that had appeared in such huge films wound up in this garbage.

I like bad SciFi. This was dull and boring SciFi. Very different, not interesting.

Also, Martin is one of the most beautiful men to ever be put in film.

Why a film maker would have someone with his physical appeal in a movie and not exploit it, even just a little bit, is so beyond me.

Similar problem with Yellowbeard. Martin is a PIRATE! is tied to a chair. Is on a ship. But is never shown shirtless.

Though some promotional photos did show him shirtless.

It makes you wish David Decouteau was in charge of all of these movies.

There is a director who knows how to make use of a pretty male.

Other than a few good effects, you've seen it before elsewhere, but better.

A whiskey stream of consciousness review.

Three Young Americans tour the back parts of Spain in an RV when they encounter an Ooey-gooey parasite from space (the film is called "Alien Predators" in some circles which is probably the better title). The version I watched was called "The Falling", which I guess makes sense as the creature makes it to earth via a fallen NASA Skylab. The movie opens with some pretty good gross-out moments and weirdo scenes. "Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood or yo? Yo is my squatcho!" Not sure what that means, but considering that's the nickname of my parrot who sat through this with me... definitely the line of the film. Other than that, what little memorable dialogue tends to miss the mark or is overreacted. There was some serious promise at the start, but then the film gets real slow and nonsensical. The only redeeming element, was some of the the cinematography and the excellent clarity of transfer. There is one final decent final 'gotcha', but the ending is terribly underwhelming. Maybe funnier with a few friends, but I have me doubts, Skip this one unless desperate. Co-habited and imbibed with some Wild Turkey 101. Cheers!

Great new candidate for Joe Bob's Drive In?

Oh sooooo very 80's cheese. Because prior reviewer covered the film quite thoroughly, allow me to add: Scooby-Doo Fu + The Thing Fu + Alien Fu + Duel Fu + European Vacation Fu + John Hughes Fu + puppets = Alien Predator aka The Falling.

I probably missed a few derivative 80s horror/SiFi rip offs, but you get the drift. Something for everyone.... or maybe not.

Just glad WE didn't rent an RV when we went to Spain.

Wanna Take A Trip Down GoT Memory Lane?

The Falling, as I saw it titled on Comet, might generously be called a B movie. But you'll see a lot of locations that you'll remember from Game of Thrones.

You'll also see a few semi-famous actors you'll recognize, and the NASA logo from back then. So, combined with the locations in Spain, it wasn't a totally cheapo effort.

(Oh, and a coincidence - as I looked up The Falling on IMDb, the first film to come up starred none other than Maisie Williams.)

Still Better Than Halloween:Resurrection

As bad of a movie this is, it can still be viewed as a good (rainy)Saturday afternoon time-waster. There are far worse(halloween:resurrection)movies out there. I would recommend this to anyone who likes campy, b-grade, low-budget type films. A lot better than another piece of crap that I won't mention here(halloween:resurrection).

This movie is so incredibly underrated

The Falling (aka Alien Predators, 1986) is a movie that I recently rewatched on Tubi. The storyline follows three American friends on an adventure across Spain when something from space crashes in a nearby field and begins consuming any and everything it comes across. When the Americans run their RV over the alien they get out and investigate putting themselves in the alien's crosshairs.

This movie is directed by Deran Sarafian (To Die For) and stars Dennis Christopher (Django), Martin Hewitt (Endless Love), Lynn-Holly Johnson (The Watcher in the Woods) and Luis Prendes (King of Kings).

This movie is so incredibly underrated. The special effects and gore is way better than it should be. The cow opening is tremendous as is the use of dogs to take the gore to another level. I will say I wanted way more kills and glimpses of the alien, but the ones that do occur are awesome. The storyline was cliche but fun to watch unfold. This has great characters that are relatable and easy to root for. I adored the ending which was classic 80s horror.

Overall, this movie may not be perfect, but it is really, really good. I would score this a 7.5/10 and strongly recommend it.
