High Stakes

Just caught the last few minutes of this on early morning UK TV.. satellite, and though it has the look, soft at that, of a film like Mannequin..if you know what I mean.. softish look about it.. synthy music typical of its release year, but one or two 'gag' lines and, whats this? Actually flippin hilarious! Now I'll wait for it to be round again, it will be, but how many films are there called High Stakes? When I saw the list on here I thought.. which one? Blimey.. so, well worth watching and I cant wait to see all of it.. some saucy bits in it but all family stuff. Yes, the other comment I read first was complimentary.. I'll read the other few after this, but as there aren't many.. how many people have seen it? Didn't look for box office yet. Its a well shot film..maybe should have been wide screen and not just 16-9.. if its a cheapie DVD.. I'll think about it.

There's nothing remotely worth seeing about this movie except for maybe Jackson Davies and Dave Foley. Given, the first part is actually funny, and I sort of wish the makers of the film had concentrated on that aspect more than the Nazi thing. Dave Foley is great in this as a first in a line of starring roles. Although, he did a similar characterization, though better, in The Wrong Guy. I'd recommend that one over this. But if you like Mike MacDonald's Mr. Nice guy, you may like this. It lacks the slap stick and MacDonald's great humour, but it's good for fans of relatively poor movies.

I'll give this movie one thing. David Foley, that's it. The acting is so bad, even for 1986. The plot outlins a boy, Bo Baker (Folet) hired by his uncle who really for some unknown reason HATES him, to uncover a nazi scandle.

Out of 10-3.1 for creativity.

The first time i saw high stakes i was about 11 years old and i enjoyed it then for a few reasons.

1. Its one of a kind of comedy rarely seen.

2. Not to be taken seriously as its kind of spoofy.

3. It does have a reasonable story not forgetting its only fun to watch.

4. The friendship between bo and his uncle is zaney its so funny

now if you didn't get the movie you weren't watching it closely even as

a kid i got this movie first time round. I'm not saying it deserves awards but its not that bad and how can people say there's only one funny bit in it there's more than one funny moment in fact there's many like at the start there's the moment when you see bo as a child now i wont spoil it for you but this bit is crucial because you the viewer will see why bo doesn't get on with his uncle and its funny. i haven't seen a movie like this ever since, maybe the sort of humour is a one off this is why it should get more recognition i not saying that this was well made its far from it but its a fun not to be taken seriously one of its kind little movie. tag line bo bakers cool. hes got class and if you're smart you don't mess with bo( me adding) because hes a jerk. if you want to see something different watch this. another funny bit was that preacher hes so funny and the blind surgeon he doesn't say much but the fact that he is a blind surgeon is funny you don't get many of them.

It has it's moments. I think this movie is worth seeing just for the scene in which the Nazi millionaire fires a shotgun at cute teddy bears in his backyard. "Auf weidersehn Chubby!" Although at times the over the top parody is tedious.
