Sigourney Weaver accepted the award on Caine's behalf, as he could not attend the ceremony due to production on
Les Dents de la mer 4 : La Revanche (1987). Caine later said of the poorly-received third sequel to
Les Dents de la mer (1975), "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
