Hamburg the Beautiful!

Everyone who has ever been to Hamburg should watch this series. The pictures, the stories and the characters, both main and supporting, are a big, loving homage to this great city.

In the 80s, when the series started, it had a completely different message. There was this tough but still female police officer who was there to show people that women could do proper police work, too. Mareike Carriere did a good job and her character developed over the time and became a really interesting person. When she finally quit it was a huge loss.

The original male officer had been Arthur Brauss, a somewhat grumpy, older, experienced officer who suddenly had to deal with that young, vivacious woman at his side. Well, they had quarrels, but they came to an arrangement with each other of course over the years.

He was followed by Jan Fedder, who then became the big star of this series with his rough charm and broad Hamburg accent. He was the real stuff, the typical "Hamburger Jung" (boy from Hamburg) who grew up between harbour and Reeperbahn and knows the city like the back of his hand.

Around that time the series slowly changed into what it is today: Funny, exciting, picturesque, dark, surprising and thoroughly dependable. You get what you bargained for with that series. In short: it is simply "Hamburgisch".

There is only one small thing, you have to know: If you don't fall in love with Hamburg while watching that series, you are a heartless fool.

Great Television

I became hooked of this show a couple of years ago and I haven't missed an episode since then. I never considered myself a big fan of German shows, but I immediately liked the chemistry between the main characters. I remember watching my first episode. It was Christmas evening in 1996 and I was surprised. What attracted me, was the heavy UST between Dirk and his partner at that time (Tanja). I got to watch again a couple of weeks later. And then I started taping them. I have watched and re-watched episodes and I love it even more. I'm feeling deprived when the show is not on, and I would love to see the show from its early start. It is fantastic if you want to run away from real life. You just sit, watch it and enjoy what they serve you. I never ever get bored and I'm totally crazy about the UST (or is it my imagination). I was feeling down when I heard Andrea Lüdke was leaving the series. But I gave the new actress a chance and I didn't regret it. She's even better than Andrea and for everyone who likes to put characters together, go and watch it. You'll find something sweet growing between Dirk and Anna. I love putting characters together, but for that I have to like them. Grossstadtrevier is one of the best shows on television, even if it is a German show. I had to put my opinion about German shows aside. And I still feel like cop shows are the best around, whatever country they are from. If you want my advice, sit back and enjoy the great entertainment this show is offering you
