    Threadbare but likeable

I watched this film on a whim: it was on late night TV, and my curiosity as to what else ER's Anthony Edwards was capable of got the better of me. And in a way I'm glad I did, as - for all its faults - "Hometown Boy..." is still worth a lazy Sunday afternoon's viewing. Which is not to say the film is a forgotten classic, or any other such cliché, but as far as TV movie versions of familiar misunderstanding-based tales go, this one is at least eminently likeable.

Edwards plays Boyd Geary - the hometown boy of the title, a med. school drop-out who returns to his childhood abode to visit his mother and break the news of his failure to keep up with his studies. Naturally circumstances conspire against his well-meaning intentions, and after many abortive attempts to reveal the truth he is coaxed into playing doctor to the delighted, ignorant town.

This conceit is drawn out with some nice touches, particularly the amusing group counselling scenes and Edwards' gloriously overbearing, potty mother. Geary's character is subtly fleshed out against a predominantly two-dimensional cast of parochial oddities, with his obvious discomfort at finding himself back among half-forgotten friends and acquaintances, and quiet enjoyment of the respect his deception secures adding some tactful sympathy to his predicament.

That said, "Hometown Boy..." never strays from the boundaries of (very) light entertainment, feeling in places more like an extended daytime soap than a movie. Nevertheless, the film is a spirited alternative to its big-budgeted counterparts - and just as worthy of switching off your brain for.

    Hometown Boy Makes SoSo

Not a bad movie, "Hometown Boy" does have a certain endearing quality, with solid acting and direction. Anthony Edwards plays his typical geeky self in a benign story that predictably gets his character (Boyd Geary) in over his head. I thought the ending was even a little poignant and sweet, but the movie did lack something key. I think it had to do with the humor - or lack thereof. Several scenes that were supposed to add some comedy fell flat and kept "Hometown Boy" from being anything more than a passably enjoyable little film.

    The pre-"Mumford"

I knew that when I first saw a trailer for the Kasdan film "Mumford" that I'd seen it before. I even knew the name of the movie and who starred in it. That sounds pretty pathetic considering it only has ten votes to date and I think at least five of those belong to my brother and I (we thought it should at least have star rating). A movie can't truly exist until it has a star rating on the IMDb. Anyhow, I'm not saying "Hometown Boy Makes Good" is a masterpiece, certainly not, but it is an original (provided no one tells me otherwise). And who could turn down a movie with everyones favorite nerd, Anthony Edwards.

Predates "Fargo" with it's Minnesota Charm

Having worked on this film, I can provide a few insights. This low budget HBO made-for-cable production was shot mostly in Hastings, MN. David Morris, the director from St. Paul, made a standout comedy "Patti Rocks". It featured Chris Mulkey, also from Minnesota, an actor who has been involved in many well known films and TV shows. The star of HBMG is Anthony Edwards, who had a standout role in Top Gun, and showed his comedic talent in the Revenge of the Nerds.

The director told me he was heavily influenced by the movie Blue Velvet. So he included a lot of that small town flavour, including shots resembling the white picket fence featured in the David Lynch film. Twin Peaks followed that small town theme, so it is no surprise that Grace Zabriskie from that TV show was cast in this movie. The plot involves a college dropout that has been hiding the fact from his sweet mother. She believes that he is a successful psychiatrist. Not to disappoint her, he returns to his hometown pretending he is big time doctor.

The movie becomes more about the characters in his hometown and how they fit into his past. We see Jerry Hardin, a great character actor seen in many shows, such as "X Files", as a quirky mayor. There is his old high school sweetheart, his drinking buddies, and the town rich kid. Complications arise when Chris Mulkey, husband to Edwards' sweetheart, seeks his psychiatric help. Other members of town express their own issues that convince maybe Edwards might "make good" by setting up a fake practice in town. A real doctor in town starts to suspect things, putting the pressure on Edwards to come clean.

Mulkey is the standout here, playing a small town cop that doesn't have the smarts to figure out how to resolve his marital difficulties. The comedy moves along quickly enough, encapsulating many of the quirky qualities seen in later TV shows and movies like "Fargo" or "Northern Exposure". But the story also needs to straddle issues of suicide and rocky relationships. And it's hard to be too sympathetic with Edwards' character, being a college dropout with no intentions to change. The humour based on his deception feels like a typical comedy, so there is not much that stands out here. The premise was ultimately a little thin and the humour a little pushed.

Edwards would find greater success playing a more serious and complex character in the TV show "ER". As much fun as I had being an intern on the movie, there was not enough depth to this story to make it a standout. But it did a nice job shooting at real locations and showing how Minnesota could be a filming destination. Right after this film was made, a long run of features were shot in Minnesota.
