The Killer

The Early Serial Killer Storylines In Bones Were More Of A Demand Than A Choice
Image
"Bones" episodes usually followed a fairly simple plot: A body was found and it was up to Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) to find out what happened. This was how "Bones" worked, with each episode offering up its own mini mystery that was usually solved by the end of the installment. Except, quite often, the show would introduce viewers to a serial killer, prompting multi-episode storylines which could often be tricky for an episodic series.

Throughout the show's run, we were introduced to The Ghost Killer, The Gravedigger, and The Hacktivist, who was responsible for serving Bones and Booth with a fresh body that went a little too far even for the show's producer. There was also season 3's cannibal killer The Gormogon, whose storyline Boreanaz once called, in about as candid a way as possible, "just bad television." But the very first...

Cannes Review: Joel Edgerton & Sean Harris In Thomas M Wright’s ‘The Stranger’
Image
An undercover cop befriends a murder suspect in The Stranger, a taut Australian thriller in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. Written and directed by Thomas M. Wright (Acute Misfortune), it features excellent performances from Sean Harris and Joel Edgerton, who also serves as producer.

The Stranger begins simply enough: two men strike up a conversation on a long bus journey. One is a loner, Henry (a perfectly-cast Harris), the other a new arrival in town, Paul (Steve Mouzakis). Paul needs a friend; Henry needs work. When Paul offers to introduce his new pal to his criminal contacts, Henry nervously accepts. Enter Mark (Joel Edgerton), who’s presented as a mid-level crime boss with smuggling work on offer. Intimidated but fascinated, Henry goes along for the ride and is drawn to Mark, spending time with him on the job.

Except, there is no job. It is revealed early on that Paul...

Thomas Wright Talks About the Dark Side of ‘The Stranger’
Image
Australian native Thomas M. Wright is no stranger to dark material. He portrayed a haunted ex-con in Jane Campion’s series “Top of the Lake,” wrote and directed fierce plays for his Black Lung theater company and examined a twisted relationship in his 2018 directorial debut, the black comedy “Acute Misfortune.” But few of his past projects approach the level of anguish and suspense in his sophomore feature, “The Stranger,” which plays in Un Certain Regard May 20. “I certainly grapple with difficult ideas and truths in my work,” Wright says. “But the world is a dark place.”

Though he directed plays for years, Wright felt he “didn’t have any right to do it” onscreen until he was cast in “Lake” by Campion. “At the end, I said to Jane, ‘I’m thinking of writing and directing,’ She said, ‘You need to learn to write first, and when you’ve written something,...

John Woo to Direct Reimagining of The Killer, Arriving on Peacock Next Year
John Woo at an event for Paycheck (2003)
After two decades of working back in his native country of China, action master John Woo’s return to Hollywood filmmaking has been solidified. He’s currently shooting Silent Night, a dialogue-free actioner starring Joel Kinnaman, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Kid Cudi. Now, one of his projects in development for the last few years has been given a green light.

Back in 2018, it was announced that the director would be reimagining his 1989 action classic The Killer, which starred Chow Yun-fat as an assassin who accidentally blinds a singer and he goes on one last mission to secure the funds for an operation to restore her sight. While Lupita Nyong’o was attached, she had to drop out due to scheduling issues but now the project has been revived.

In a press release, it’s confirmed Woo will next direct the project, though no casting has been confirmed yet. However, a New...

David Fincher's The Killer Has Wrapped Filming
David Fincher
Roughly two years ago, master director David Fincher signed an exclusive deal with Netflix, and his first feature film as part of that deal, "The Killer," has wrapped filming. Seth Meyers Blasts Bill Barr’s Media Tour: ‘Interviewing This Charlatan Is Such a Waste of Time’ (Video)
Seth Meyers at an event for Portlandia (2011)
Seth Meyers took on former US Attorney General Bill Barr’s recent media tour on Thursday’s episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” specifically Barr’s revelation that despite his criticism of Donald Trump, he’d vote for him again in 2024 if he were the Republican nominee.

The most recent installment of “A Closer Look” began by covering the many companies pulling their business out of Russia before taking aim at Barr’s new “sham book” that is “supposedly criticizing Trump’s behavior.”

Meyers showed a clip of Barr on Fox News recounting an “unsettling” encounter with Trump.

“It was certainly unsettling when I went in to talk to the President about the election and he was livid and shaking and showed a lot of temper and yelling, that was a little unsettling,” Barr told Bret Baier. “But the other thing that was actually unsettling was later when I...

Mars Attacks! Almost Featured Killer Dinosaurs – Here's Why Tim Burton Changed It
Pierce Brosnan, Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Danny DeVito, and Annette Bening in Mars Attacks! (1996)
"Mars Attacks!" is Tim Burton's ode to alien invasion B-movies from the 1950s, and it's become a bit of a cult classic despite its cold reception at release. The hijinx-strewn battle between inept politicians and big-brained aliens wearing fishbowls on their heads seemed confusingly silly to an audience hot off the very earnest "Independence Day," which came out earlier the same year. However, Burton initially wanted to make a movie about a dinosaur assault instead, which would have drawn immediate comparisons to "Jurassic Park."

"Mars Attacks!" is based on a series of trading cards published in 1962 that featured the familiar-looking...

Dexter: New Blood Episode 9 Review – The Family Business
Michael C. Hall in Dexter: New Blood (2021)
This Dexter: New Blood review contains spoilers.

Dexter: New Blood Episode 9

This is as good as Dexter gets.

While Dexter: New Blood has done more than enough to remove the bad taste left by the original series’ mostly maddening final three seasons, “The Family Business” justifies reviving the show. It’s the best episode of the series since season 4, containing most of the elements that made the deliciously dark drama irresistible; there’s plenty of black humor mixed in, interesting conversations about vigilantism and justice, difficult questions about mitigating problematic behavior, suspenseful games of cat and mouse, and it’s all anchored by knock-out performances. I’ve had my quibbles with this season, but this was what I envisioned as a best-case scenario when Dexter: New Blood was announced. Whether Clyde Phillips and his writer’s room can stick the landing remains to be seen, but “The Family Business” is...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer': Killer Gets Tech-Savvy in First Teaser for Amazon Reboot Series (Video)
Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr. in Souviens-toi... l'été dernier (1997)
Amazon released the first teaser for its “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot series Wednesday, revealing a new generation of teens being hunted down by a killer who, well, knows what horrible act they did last summer. And thanks to the updates in technology since the original flick — and the Lois Duncan book it’s based on — came out, the new villain in this series is way more tech-savvy.

Just look at that haunting “I’m Coming 4 U” text, complete with a clown emoji, that’s sent to the kids who think no one knows about the crime they are trying to cover up.

Watch the teaser video above.

Written and executive produced by Sara Goodman, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, which was also the basis of the iconic 1997 film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe.

Zola Review: Stripper's Viral Tweets Get an Ugly, Bonkers Adaptation
Image
In October 2015, A'Ziah "Zola" King, a Detroit Hooters waitress and part-time stripper, unleashed a 150 tweet thread that became a viral sensation. The tweetstorm, now infamously known as the "The Story", was a bonkers account of a road trip with a brazen young woman she'd served at work. Zola, actually titled @Zola, is adapted from David Kushner's Rolling Stone article, "Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted". The film is a rollercoaster ride down a sordid path of prostitution, sexual slavery, and violence. Zola's shot in an imaginative way that highlights the pure insanity. How much of it is true remains to be clarified, but it's absolutely eye-popping to see.

Zola opens with her (Taylour Paige) waiting tables as a scantily clad restaurant server. She catches the eye of Stefani (Riley Keough), provocatively dressed and dining with a much older man. Stefani and Zola hit it off immediately.

Film Review: Gunmen (1988) by Kirk Wong
Image
Around this time, several productions emerged that seemed to mirror the success of “The Untouchables”. “First Shot” was to follow a few years after this, but in the same year came “The Big Heat” also produced by Tsui Hark and starring Waise Lee. All three are set in different periods, but feature a similar narrative around police corruption and a small team of straight cops that refused to succumb. The latter of the three is the finer piece of work but whilst this production is flawed it is not without merit. Kirk Wong is probably not talked about a lot in modern circles. Whilst he doesn’t have the visual flourish of a peak John Woo, or the intensity of a Ringo Lam, his work always has, for the most part, a polish that other contemporaries lack.

During the Chinese civil war, four friends escape from the...
