      Abbas Mustan's debut Hindi venture

This film starred Jeetu Ji (in a special appearance ), Madhavi , Aashif Sheikh , Sonu Walia, Sadashiv Amrapurkar , Joginder, Kiran Kumar and Raj Babbar.

Special aspects in the movie are as follows

      1) Raj Babbar is Zanjeer Wala Policeman who literally wears a Zanjeer around his waist . He hits the villians with that Zanjeer and then puts the Zanjeer around their necks to take them to police station. Sadly he makes an entry only in the second half of the movie.

      2) Madhavi is stikler for Insaaf and Kanoon and her boyfriend is rich Industrialist Jeetu Ji. But fate has other plans, Sadashiv Amrapurkar's South Indian son who is also a cop wants to rape her. So when he tries, Jeetu Ji stops him but Jeetu Ji is killed and falls near the Indian flag. To take revenge Madhavi uproots the hoisted national flag and kills the Sasta Rajnikanth with it.

      3) Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Joginder can only think about either rape or killing. The movie starts with Joginder killing a cop who has come to arrest him. Before killing him he puts newspapers mentioning all acts of bravery of this policeman on his face.

      4) Joginder has a special scene. When his goons are beaten by Raj Babbar. He makes them all become murga in a line and then he crawls behind them to talk to them. His dog is sitting on his back while he crawls. He even crawls under them while talking to look at their face and scold them.

      5) Madhavi goes to prison holding a tiranga in her hand. She fights elections from prison and wins against Sadashiv Amrapurkar but when she is giving a bashan after winning she is shot dead. After getting three bullets she still continues with her speech and encourages the mob to kill Sadashiv Amrapurkar.

      6) The mob digs a grave and they want to bury him alive but Raj Babbar stops them and says Iska Insaaf Kanoon Karega

      7) The famous garba song Pankhida is remixed with Angrezi beats and sounds terrible. The only respite being Udit Narayan's voice.

      8) Performances - Madhavi is decent in emotional scenes. Raj Babbar looks good while talking but action scenes don't suit him in my opinion. Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Tinnu Anand Ham it up. But Joginder steals the show with his hamming.

      9) Kiran Kumar plays a corrupt DSP. For some reason Kiran Kumar has a house with a Swimming Pool in Bharatnagar and his wife Kunika wears a bikini and swims in it. You guessed it right Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Joginder try to rape her but she chooses to jump from the terrace and die.

      10) Just when you thought the movie will end, it ends. There is no twist. I was waiting for the twist since it was an Abbas Mustan movie but the movie ended. Also everyone who is dying actually dies and there is no double cross.

On a serious note it is a good one time watch if you ignore the hammy acting.

Madhavi's solid performance makes it watchable

      Agneekaal review :

Most of you may believe that Director Duo Abbas-Mustan's debut film was the musical thriller Khiladi (1990) but nah, their first Bollywood film is the lesser known Agneekaal which released in Diwali 1990.

A typical 80s style actioner, Agneekaal was set in a fictitious town called Bharatnagar which is ruled by the local politician Jakotia (Sadashiv Amrapurkar carrying forward his slimy role from Aakhree Raasta (1986)) and his dreaded goon Bhika (Joginder getting a substantial part after ages!!).

Madhavi played the main protagonist Bharti who murders Jakotia's son after he attempts to rape her and kills her fiancè Vijay (Jeetendra in a special appearance). Raj Babbar appears as an upright cop who carries a set of chains with him to fight the goons. Zanjeerwala Inspector, they call him!!

Sonu Walia and Asif Sheikh appear in blink and miss roles while Tinu Anand hams it up as the local newspaper editor. Kunika gets to wear two swimsuits and one rape scene as she plays DCP Kiran Kumar's wifey who becomes an object of lust for his boss Jakotia (reminiscent of Aakhree Raasta).

Agneekaal wasnt too bad for 1990 but didnt do well at the box office. Released at Minerva cinema, Mumbai, it clashed with Anil Kapoor's Jamai Raja and both the films tanked after the Diwali weekend. The films positive is an assured act from the pretty Madhavi who lends credibility to the otherwise routine enterprise.

      Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
