Before he died, Raymond Chandler informed his agent Helga Greene never to allow the character of Philip Marlowe to appear in a TV show.
Helga Greene later allowed this show to be made after discussions with producer David Wickes.
The first season was made in the UK and Los Angeles. The second season was made in Canada.
The eleven episodes all adapt short stories by Philip Marlowe's creator, Raymond Chandler, but only one of them - The Pencil - was written originally about the character. Chandler used several other names for his narrating P.I. when writing hard-boiled detective stories, for Black Mask magazine, and others. Later, he simply changed these names, including John Dalmas and Mallory, when Marlowe collections were published in book form. Three more of this series' episodes are therefore official, author-sanctioned Philip Marlowe stories - Finger Man, Trouble Is My Business and Red Wind - while the others may have required more creative adaptation to include the character.
