Was intentionally filmed in black and white, as the filmmakers forsaw how disturbing the visuals would be and they "wanted audiences to at least finish the film". This proved to be very useful with rating certificates as well, since the blood would be difficult to decipher from other objects.
Portions of the film are used as a music video for Machine Gun by Portishead.
Filming proved to be difficult with much of the cast and crew abandoning the production, and only Taguchi and Tsukamoto arriving on set to finish the film.
The film is included among the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die," edited by Steven Schneider.
