Elvira is Hilaroius!

OK, this movie is stupid. I mean that in a good way though. It was stupid on purpose, and was one of the better "stupid" movies I've seen. The jokes and gags are purposefully bad, but delivered in a way that it struck all the right notes with me. The supporting characters were pretty shallow and mediocre. There is a pretty weak plot, but it works just fine.

Elvira's character is the focus here. She is lovable and adorable.Cassandra Petersen has a world of acting talent that just glows in this movie. On top of that acting talent she had physical attributes which were frankly, stunning. Few men could disagree with that. The parts that show off her figure were also some of the funnier scenes in the movie.

I had a smile ear to ear from the first scene to the last.

Highly recommended to fans of comedy, and to fans of beautiful women. I wish they had made a dozen more Elvia movies.

Funny Cult-Trash

When a chauvinist millionaire buys the TV network where the sexy Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) is the horror hostess of a late show, she quits her job with the intention of producing a show of her own in Las Vegas. However the producers demand 50 thousand dollars from her and Elvira does not have the money. Out of the blue, she receives a telegram informing that her great aunt Morgana died and she has an inheritance to receive. Elvira drives to Fallwell, in Massachusets, where her car breaks. While repairing the car, Elvira inherits an old house, a recipe book and a poodle. Her great uncle Vincent Talbot (W. Morgan Sheppard) proposes to buy her book, but the poodle hides it in the sofa. Meanwhile the conservative council of Fallwell feels uncomfortable with Elvira's clothes and behavior and does not let her find a job. But the cinema owner Bob Redding (Daniel Greene) and the local teenagers help Elvira. When she decides to cook a dinner to impress Bob, she uses Morgana's recipe and finds that it is indeed a spell book that belonged to her mother Divana. Further, Morgana has protected her from the warlock Vincent that wants the book to take over the world and destroy Elvira, who is a powerful witch. When Elvira refuses to sell the spell book to Vincent, her convinces the council that she is a witch that must be burned at the stake. How will Elvira stop the evil Vincent?

"Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" is a funny cult-trash that works for the fans. This cheesy film is hilarious despite all the silliness and the sexy Cassandra Peterson is the responsible for making it worthwhile watching. My vote is seven.

Q: Can Elvira carry a feature film? A: YES!

"Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark" is a sort of "Harper Valley P.T.A." with touches of the supernatural. Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) walks off her job as television horror movie hostess after the new station's owner gets fresh with her. She's now relying on a Las Vegas show to carry her through, but learns she needs to come up with more money to get the show started. Things look hopeless to raise that money until she receives notice of her aunt's death, which then takes Elvira to Massachusetts for the reading of the will. A house in need of repairs, a dog, and a cookbook are all that is left to her by her aunt, and again it seems Elvira is having trouble coming up with the money for the Las Vegas show. The adults of the small and narrow minded town make things worse by making things more difficult for Elvira. Only the local hunk (Daniel Greene), and a group of teenagers will befriend her. Elvira's Uncle "Vinnie" (W. Morgan Sheppard), presses to make a deal with Elvira for the cookbook, but Elvira soon learns of her powerful heritage that includes spellcasting, and a couple very effective casseroles. Elvira no longer wants to sell the cookbook to her uncle, but he is determined to get his hands on it knowing of its power. Elvira then faces being burned at the stake on the town's old charge of witchcraft, and the showdown between her and her uncle. The plot is pretty simple, but the humor and well developed characters keep it moving at a nice pace. "Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark" is full of cute, gross, bawdy, and clever humor carried through by the many sight gags, puns, props, songs, and parodies. The film's touches of the occult make this one of the best horror parodies ever made. It is a well made film with terrific acting by all performers; including Edie McClurg, and Jeff Conaway (of "Grease.") There are also nice special effects. Many people (including myself) wondered if the Elvira character could carry a feature film, and the answer is delightfully, YES!

The cup(s) of horror runneth over with titillating humor

This movie is simply the best horror-film parody ever made. And it's also just one darned enjoyable flick. I guess you could call it a guilty pleasure. True, it is pure cornball, but I have grown to love it, and I watch it regularly every year around Halloween, since (naturally) several channels on TV routinely feature it as part of that select batch of Halloween pictures that just scream for annual broadcasting.

Extremely well filmed (IMHO), I am always really amazed at how nice it is to see it again each year – it holds up well and looks fantastic even today, after 13 years.

From a physical perspective, Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) - with that showgirl figure and that over-the-top tight-fitting black costume - just grabs your attention with both, um, *hands*, from the get go, and never lets go. But there's much more to revel in here than just her physical assets: her acting, her ditzy charm and irreverent risqué sense of humor will just have you lapping it up. In short, you'll just love Elvira from top to bottom (unlike the townies in the story, many of whom decidedly did not take kindly to her sudden arrival in their up-tight little burg in Massachusetts).

This movie is just busting out all over with titillating, slightly off-color humor (or: off-colour humour for those of you on the other side of the Atlantic) from start to finish. There are many funny and memorable lines in this movie of the double-entendre variety; it's hard to keep abreast of them all. (I'd list a few of my racier favorites here, but in the interest of not offending the delicate sensibilities of anyone reading this who is NOT into that sort of humor, well, it might be best for you to just go watch the movie and compile your own list).

I can't say anything bad about this movie at all, except that sadly it does end, and you are left wanting more (of Elvira). LOTS more. Alas, c'est la vie.

Funny in a stupid sort of way

OK, I saw this in the theaters when it came out and I don't know why. I haven't seen it since, but I ended up on this page because I found myself thinking about this film - again I don't know why. But the fact that I remember it speaks volumes.

Comedy is hard - much harder than any drama. Doing it right makes it seem easy, but doing it wrong ... is there anything worse than a bad comedy? Steve Martin, pay attention, you are falling in this category again for some reason.

Elvira Mistress Of The Dark must have done it right for me to remember this movie fondly. Done at a quick pace, with tongue in cheek and knowing it isn't the Philedelphia Story, it entertains from start to finish. Brain Donors is another that fits right in this category (sans most of the gratuitous boob jokes).

One point of contention - the ending. It seems the writers/director had no idea how to finish a comedy. The ending tries to be a love story, somewhat undermining the quirky fast-paced dialogue up to that point. Then there is the "tassle" scene. Whereas this has to be seen (male opinion), it is so over the top and out of place it's like a shock. One more rewrite for the ending was needed.

This is not comedy genius like Spinal Tap or The Producers or The Holy Grail. But if you don't try to dissect it and just let the puns and sappy fun come to you, you'll laugh, I guarantee it.

It's not Schindler's List, and it isn't trying to be

I was talked into watching this the other night at a party. I said "NO THANKS!" but my friend told me I'd like it.

Guess what? I liked it. Elvira was so good at her delivery. I'm surprised she didn't do more films, since she was a natural on camera.

This movie is not to be taken seriously obviously, but the one-liners kept stacking up. Many that I would consider using in the future.

I could go into the plot, but it is a paper thin plot which is okay. The film has a kitschy fun playful mood and that's the plot as far as I'm concerned.

I'd recommend this if you grew up in the 80s and have a fun sense of humor. This isn't trying to be a masterpiece. It's just fun, and having seen so many movies that attempt this kind of film I am glad to have discovered it.

Congrats, Cassandra, you did well!

Perfect Movie of it's Type

I don't doubt that the critics panned this movie, especially the artsy fartsys who need a laxative. This is a great vehicle movie in the tradition of Abbot & Costello or more recently Don Knotts. It won't shake the world or change movies forever. What it will do is entertain. When all is said & done that's the most important thing anyway. Watch this movie & forget your troubles. It even has a simple & kind moral message at no extra charge. I always loved Elvira's TV show when I lived in LA. She did not really steal her schtick from Vampira any more than Vampira did from the original, Theda Bara. This sort of mythic character belongs to whoever does it best; & Cassandra Peterson does it best. Long live Elvira; we need more of these kind of movies. There are never enough. The villain, William Morgan Sheppard, was also excellent. He exudes a wonderful refined malice. I could find no technical faults. The execution is as close to flawless as the art form gets. My profound compliments to the director,James Signorelli,& all his crew.

This is a fun and nostalgic movie that is definitely worth a viewing

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) is a movie I recently rewatched on Shudder. The storyline follows your favorite horror late night personality as she looks to start a new job in Vegas; unfortunately for her, she needs to front half the bill for the show. Lucky for Elvira a recently passed aunt has died and included her in her will. Is this the big break she needs? This movie is directed by James Signorelli (Police Academy 2) and stars Cassandra Peterson (Pee-Wes's Playhouse), Bill Morey (Death Race 2000), Daniel Greene (Me, Myself & Irene) and Jeff Conaway (Grease). The presentation of Elvira in this was perfect. Peterson was perfect - her script, mannerisms and props (like the car, dog, etc) we're all excellent. There was a lot of witty banter in this as well as some elements that felt very 80s (I think there were 3 montages). The soundtrack is very fun and this movie does a great job of not taking itself too seriously. I also loved seeing her pull into town - you can quickly recognize the Warner Brothers set from Gremlins and Monster Squad in the background. Overall this is a fun and nostalgic movie that is definitely worth a viewing. I'd score this a solid 7/10. Oh yeah, her closing act is excellent.

"It's OK. My appearance is kind of a shock to everybody."

I never saw any of the TV shows, but we know where the eyes will be heading, but it's the character's main draw-card and this aspect is played for the laughs. 'Elvira' is light-headed in its context, but quite low-brow with its humour, as a sizzling siren Cassandra Peterson laced up in her spunky Gothic wardrobe resembles a Mae West with her sharp-witted (although not always funny, but they're either bad and good) wisecracks. This film is pretty much a living parody, as it follows horror TV show hostess Elvira quit her job in the dream of performing in Las Vegas… but to keep that show alive, she needs money to pay for it. She learns she will be receiving an inheritance from her deceased auntie in a quaint, conservative little rural town. Hoping for money, she ends up with the house, dog and a family cook book (or is it just a cook book?). Which for some reason her uncle Vincent would do anything to get his hands on that book. Its loopy camp of a very one-joke kind, which patterns itself into contrived silliness. It moves by fast enough, even though it does become starved of gags due to simply relying on its same-old collection of its 'fish out of water' gags of a performance that's more than just an act. Director James Signorelli colourfully spruce handling uses cheeky references and builds a certain likable charm. William Morgan Sheppard and a dynamically ripe Edie McClurg are quite fun their roles… in what you can call the meanies of the film. In the end it knows what it is, and purposely keeps it to that; simple-minded, crude and carefree kitsch.

Elvira rocks

ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK (1988)

directed by: James Signorelli

starring: Cassandra Peterson, W. Morgan Sheppard, Daniel Greene, and Edie McClurg

plot: Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) quits her TV show and heads to the small Christian town Fallwell, Massachusettes to collect on her dead aunt's inheritance, hoping to make big bucks to open up a show in Vegas. Unfortunately for her, all she gets is a creepy old house, a poodle, and a magic cookbook. While in Fallwell, Elvira tries to make money, breathe some life into the teenagers, win the heart of a stud (Daniel Greene), avoid being burned at the stake, and keep the cookbook from her creepy uncle (W. Morgan Sheppard), who is planning to use the book to end the world.

my thoughts: I love both Cassandra Peterson and her alter-ego Elvira. She is a very successful, beautiful, and funny woman and as Elvira she's all that plus morbid and hilariously naive, not to mention she has an amazing pair of knockers. In this movie, her charms are put to good use.

I loved the whole 'fish out of water' feel to the film. You got Elvira, with her low-cut black dress, her big black hair, and her enormous 'twins', and she's in a Christian town where most of the girls aren't even allowed to wear makeup. This also makes her love story with Bob (Daniel Greene) a lot more entertaining.

W. Morgan Sheppard is equally great as Elvira's uncle/nemesis Vincent, out to steal the book to use it for evil. He has a lot of presence but still doesn't get in the way and steal scenes from Elvira.

What really makes the film is not the plot, but the many jokes. Everything from boob jokes to horror spoofing is here and makes me laugh a lot more than anything from a SCARY MOVIE sequel. I hear there are about 56 boob jokes in this film, and any fan of Roger Corman B-horror flicks will love the spoofing in this film.

If you love Elvira, you will love this flick. Also check out ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS.

'Elvira' is a fun movie!

I don't mind Elvira but I wasn't expecting much from this film. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised. It kept my attention the whole time and was fun to watch. I really enjoyed the story and the writing.

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is the host of a television horror show. She is planning on performing a show in Vegas when she gets the news that she has to come up with a substantial amount of money to do the show. What's worse is her new boss is not shy when it comes to sexual harassment. Elvira then receives a telegram from Massachusetts stating that her great aunt died. Thinking she is going to inherit a fortune, Elvira travels to Massachusetts, but soon learns that she inherited an old house that is in desperate need of updating. She also butts heads with most of the town. There is an evil uncle trying to get a spell book that belonged to Elvira's great aunt. There is a romantic rival and others who want Elvira gone as soon as possible.

This is definitely worth a watch as it is fun and entertaining all the way through. I would recommend this to fans of Elvira but also to those who enjoy a good comedy. Obviously hardcore fans of the 80s and horror will enjoy this too.

Very strange. Much boob.

So my grandpa found this on Amazon Prime and said we should watch this. This is very strange. I'm not sure how to describe it. Its very absurd and doesn't make much sense. Its intriguing I guess. Its worth watching out of curiosity or if you like boobs I guess. Its kinda funny? I don't know. This thing is so weird.

My hearts on fire for Elvira!

Any movie that starts off with the epic closing scene from "It Conquered The World" is going to be a great movie! Essentially a movie of one Elvira routine after another, playing off of an uptight town of puritans, siding with the kids who just want to have a good time and see Elvira ham it up to schlocky old movies at their local theater. If you like Elvira's style of comedy, this is the movie for you. No pun is left unacknowledged, no breast reference unaccompanied by a stare down at "the twins". Low-brow, silly and schlocky, just like the movies she hosts and celebrates. Edie McClurg is here in her perennial role as uptight busybody, she seems typecast as this in every movie she does, but this has become her image and she is marvelous at it. Great Halloween party movie, would go well with a few B Horror Movies from the 1950s. Recommended!

Fun Elvira vehicle

The only reason to catch this one is to see TV horror hostess Elvira in action in a movie. If you are at all interested in a pneumatic goth woman going around barking her lines and chewing up the scenery at every opportunity, while wearing ultra-revealing clobber, then you are in the demographic this film was aiming at. I feel mercilessly targeted. In it, Elvira comes into a healthy inheritance from a distant aunt and then a bunch of stuff happens. The upshot is a comedy-horror with the emphasis on comedy, its basic but gets the job done but its Elvira we're here for, right?

A standing ovulation

Directed by James Signorelli and co-written by Cassandra Peterson. Elvira: Mistress of the dark marks Film debut of the titular mistress of the dark Herself Elvira(Cassandra Peterson). After being sexually harassed by her boss Elvira quits her television job in favor of a stage show of her own in Las Vegas only problem is she needs $50,000 to make it happen. Fortunately she receives a letter telling of how her great aunt just passed, decided to book it down to a small town to collect her inheritance. Only to find out that she's not exactly welcomed by everybody and that she has an uncle who wants something other then money from her. What can be said about about the character of Elvira she fun, she quirky she gots a massive personality. Everything you love about her's here from the sarcastic humor, the Macabre atmosphere and innuendos galore. Cassandra bring so much energy and life to Elvira that you don't see her you see Elvira even in the credits. The film sort of an Addams family vibe in a way the concept of having this more traditional small town as the setting offers a wide variety of opportunities. The second you see this town you know head are gonna turn. Good old 80s charm All the boys want her, all the girl want to be free spirited like her. Everyone's so uptight you wish some would turn them into pig or something. Yes to some the humor may come off as bit stale, are there alot of boob joke yeah but that part of the charm. The film's oodles of fun from start to end so long if you don't take it to serious.

Amusing comedy with Elvira

Released in 1988, "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" stars Cassandra Peterson as the zany title character who moves from Hollywood to Falwell, Massachusetts, where she inherits an old, creepy mansion. Elvira is a hit with the youths in town and makes a couple friends, but the majority find her offensive and want her out. Meanwhile her uncle is obsessed with getting a "recipe book" from the mansion for some diabolical purpose.

Cassandra was 36 during filming and looks great throughout (as do her stunt doubles). Ellen Dunning (Robin) gets an honorable mention on the female front. While only half the humor works (the other half being groan-inducing) there are several laugh-out-loud sequences, like the parodying of The Price Is Right and "Flashdance."

Christians might find the portrayal of the intolerant townsfolk offensive, but (1.) the movie's a comedy/parody, not a depiction of real-life; anyone who takes this seriously needs to visit the psych ward; (2.) the movie amusingly denounces counterfeit religiosity, i.e. sterile legalism, and not Christendom itself; and (3.) the ending pretty much makes up for the negative portrayal.

What I find somewhat annoying is the continual wisecracking that pegs Elvira as a loose woman, to put it nicely. While her long black dress reveals mega-cleavage and the upper part of one leg, it's not exactly prostitute attire; plus the story shows Elvira interested in only ONE guy, which hardly constitutes a loose woman.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a worthwhile turn-off-your-brain-and-have-a-good-time flick with Elvira. Fans of cartoony horror comedies like 2006' "Monster Night" and Scooby Doo should appreciate it.

The film runs 96 minutes and was shot in Hollywood/Burbank/Los Angeles.

Uproarious surreal comedy

A feature film may seem like an unlikely vehicle for Elvira, the late night horror show hostess. It does not take long, however, for this disarming comedy to win you over. In the same vein as Peewee Herman, Cassandra Peterson's outrageous alter-ego travels to Salem, Massachusetts to collect an inheritance. Her confrontations with the straight-laced residents are uproarious and surreal.

I fell in love with Elvira!

I think that this movie is very fun and horror. I love Elvira and I like this movie. It's very pity that second part of this wonderful movie had no success, because it very funny like a first part. I also regret that besides of this movie I have no seen Cassandra Peterson in other films.I think that she is amazing actress with big...potential. I hope that II'll see her in future in the third part of Elvira's adventures. Cassandra Peterson is one of my favorite comedy actresses. Cassandra, if you read this, know that you are the best and my heart will be with you. You can rely on me. What can I more add? This is cool and classical movie!

Cool and fun...

I remember seeing this movie back when I was a teenager in the late 1980s. The movie was lots of fun back then and still is today, which is a noteworthy feat in itself. I have watched "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" more than five times since first having on VHS - ah yes, those were the days - and it keeps being as entertaining as it was then.

It is the light-hearted comedy and atmosphere of the movie that makes it well-worth watching again and again. But also the acting performances in the movie. Of course the role of Elvira being so amazingly performed by Cassandra Peterson; she is just wonderfully charming, witty and well-cast for the Elvira character. But also William Morgan Sheppard deserved applause here, because he really suits the villain role quite well.

The story in "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" is a magical story which includes scares (sort of), action, sorcery and lots and lots of humor.

"Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" is a wholeheartedly fun spooky (without actually being spooky) movie that can be seen by the entire Family. It is a good movie for a Halloween movie marathon.

I enjoy this movie quite a lot and haven't seen it for the last time, that much is for certain.
