Association with any pre-existing intellectual property, regardless of whether its official or not, can sometimes guarantee recognition and success. One of the most well-known examples, one thats gained a reputation as one of the biggest best worst movies since Manos: The Hands of Fate, is Troll 2, Claudio Fragassos in-name-only sequel, which has spawned one of the largest cult followings in history. If Troll 2 has spawned a legacy due to its ridiculousness, then Lucio Fulcis Zombie, sometimes referred to as Zombi 2 or Zombie Flesh Eaters, deserves praise for capitalizing on the success of a horror franchise and at the same time being one of the unique entries in the canon of films that depict the living dead.

Capitalizing on the massive success of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, which was released in Italy under the title Zombi, the title Zombi 2 made it look like a clear sequel to Italian viewers.

The North American box office has been a challenge to track the past couple of years, first with movie theaters shuttering along with almost everything else due to the Covid pandemic, and then in 2023, just when thing were returning to normal, a pair of Hollywood strikes has further complicated studios’ release-date strategies.

Still, as of last weekend of August, the 2023 domestic box office is already past $6.6 billion in grosses, up 25% over the same frame a year ago, and there are still busy festival and holiday seasons to help boost awareness — and attendance.

On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every day of the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. Today’s Free Movie of the Day is writer/director Martin Gooch’s 2018 post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie Atomic Apocalypse, and you can watch it over on the YouTube channel linked above, or you can just watch it in the embed at the top of this article.

Atomic Apocalypse has the following synopsis, provided by Gooch himself:

In Post Apocalyptic North America, one family fights for survival in this sci-i road trip of epic proportions in a nightmare world without gasoline, electricity, or humanity. Man, Bruno Mattei sure loved making movies. It’s there in every frame he ever shot; his passion for film is responsible for countless classics like…okay classics is such a loaded and pliable word depending on one’s outlook. But he sure made enthusiastic films, eager to please; and most importantly he made movies that he thought audiences would want to see based on what they already loved. Case in point: Robowar (1988), a Predator “homage” mixed with a dash or two of Robocop that ends up being uniquely Italian. And if you think anyone other than Severin Films would gift you a Bruno Blu you need a timeout in the boiling jungles of the Philippines.

Where does one even start? Mattei and his frequent cohort Claudio Fragasso headed to the Philippines to make two films, both from Drudi’s scripts: this one, and After Death (aka Zombie 4) which Fragasso helmed.

If you have even a passing acquaintance with Italian horror, the odds are pretty good that you’ve come across the work of Claudio Fragasso. Like many Italian auteurs, he’s gone by many names; perhaps you know him as Clyde Anderson, director of the Alice Cooper werewolf tale Monster Dog (1984), or Drake Floyd, helmer of the legendary Troll 2 (1990). There’s also his work as a writer on fellow Italian Bruno Mattei’s The Other Hell (’81) and Rats: Night of Terror (’84). But if you’ve been following Severin Films as of late (and for shame if you haven’t), Fragasso has his hands all over their latest trio of Blu-ray releases: Shocking Dark (’89), Zombi 3 (’88), and the one where he slips into the director’s chair again, Zombie 4: After Death (’89), a film light on imagination yet heavy on high octane zombie mowdowns.

May’s home entertainment offerings are ending on a high note, led by the release of Alex Garland’s Annihilation on various formats this Tuesday. There are a handful of cult films getting an HD overhaul this week, including Zombie 3, Zombie 4: After Death, and Shocking Death from Severin Films, as well as Bloodsuckers from Outer Space (courtesy of those wonderful maniacs over at Vinegar Syndrome), and The Reincarnation of Peter Proud from Kino Lorber Classics.

Other notable releases for May 29th include Haunted: The Complete Series, They Remain,and The Lodgers.
