Report: ABC Closes American Idol Deal, Ryan Seacrest Eyed to Return
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
The votes are in, and the decision is final: American Idol is coming back to TV… this time, on ABC.

The network has nailed down the framework of a deal to reboot the hit singing competition, according to a report from our sister site Variety. ABC had to outbid Idol‘s original network Fox to secure the right to revive the franchise, the rights to which are still controlled by production company Fremantle Media. It helps that ABC already airs two Fremantle productions: Match Game and Celebrity Family Feud.

Kevin Costner in Robin des Bois, prince des voleurs (1991)
25 years ago today: ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ opened in theaters
Kevin Costner in Robin des Bois, prince des voleurs (1991)
25 years ago today, audiences first saw Kevin Costner’s turn as Robin Hood on the big screen. It was on June 14, 1991 that Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves opened in theaters. Facing off against Costner’s heroic outlaw was Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham, just three years after he made his first movie appearance in a role that would become a new classic villain, Hans Gruber in Die Hard. Rickman and Morgan Freeman got critical approval for their performances. Costner and Christian Slater, not so much. Both were nominated for Golden Raspberry Awards for Robin Hood, for Worst Actor and Worst Supporting Actor, respectively. Costner “won” his award, while Slater “lost” to Dan Ackroyd in Nothing but Trouble. Also part of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ legacy: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You.” Believe it or not, the theme ballad that Bryan Adams bleated out for this movie earned him an Oscar nomination. But Raspberries or no Raspberries, Oscars or no Oscars, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves found its audience. It was the second-highest grossing movie of 1991, beaten only by Terminator 2: Judgement Day. And it was viewed countless times on VHS for years after that. Other notable June 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1940: Jimmy Stewart film The Mortal Storm opened in theaters. • 1958: The indoor Alice in Wonderland ride opened next to the Mad Tea Party teacups ride in Disneyland. It was also the day the Columbia Sailing Ship first took passengers around Tom Sawyer Island. • 1959: The Matterhorn Bobsleds, Submarine Voyage, and the Monorail opened at Disneyland. Over 2,000 celebrities, members of the press, and dignitaries attended, including Vice President Richard Nixon. • 1965: Paul McCartney recorded the song “Yesterday” at what is now known as Abbey Road Studios in London. McCartney recorded it without the rest of the group, just with a string quartet, his vocals, and an acoustic guitar, making it essentially the first solo performance by the band. He recorded the song in two takes. • 1969: John Lennon and Yoko Ono pre-recorded an interview with David Frost that would air on July 10 that year. Lennon said in the interview, “We're trying to sell peace, like a product, you know, and sell it like people sell soap or soft drinks.” • 1970: Eric Clapton’s new band, Derek and the Dominos, gave their first live performance, at London’s Lyceum Theatre. • 1972: Simon & Garfunkel reunited to perform “Bridge Over Troubled Water” at a fundraising concert for presidential candidate George McGovern at New York’s Madison Square Garden. • 1980: The Pretenders fired bassist Pete Farndon, whose drug use had led to an increasingly strained relationship with his bandmates. • 1980: Billy Joel began six weeks atop the Billboard album chart with Glass Houses. • 1985: Family Feud, which had debuted in 1976, aired its final episode on ABC until CBS re-launched the game show in 1988. • 1989: The game Tetris was released for Game Boy in Japan. A North American release followed in July. • 1990: CBS, which had been the national broadcaster for the NBA since 1973, televised an NBA game for the final time. It was Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and Portland Trail Blazers. • 1996: Jim Carrey movie The Cable Guy opened in U.S. and Canadian theaters. • 2002: The Bourne Identity and the Sarah Michelle Gellar Scooby-Doo movie opened in theaters. • 2003: Helen Mirren had the order of Dame bestowed upon her when Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II published the list of those she’d chosen to promote to the Order of the British Empire. Three years later, Mirren portrayed Elizabeth II on film in The Queen. Sting and 007 actor Roger Moore were also conferred with the title of “Sir” on this day. • 2011: Andy Grammer released his self-titled debut studio album. Birthdays: Juno writer Diablo Cody (turns 38 today), singer Boy George (55), Reign actor Torrance Coombs (33), Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale (27), actor-motivational speaker J.R. Martinez (33), Glee actor Kevin McHale (28), Falling Skies actor Will Patton (62), Austin Powers director Jay Roach (59), Spy Kids actor Daryl Sabara (24), Blindspot actor Sullivan Stapleton (39)...

Joel McHale Talks Soup's Live Nascar 'Coup,' Realizing an X-Files Dream
Jade Catta-Preta in The Soup (2004)
When E!’s The Soup airs a live, hour-long episode from Talladega Superspeedway this Friday (10/9c), it’ll be one of the most artful examples of drafting that Nascar has ever seen.

Stock-car racing is “one of the biggest sports in the country. It’s even bigger than baseball. So, just for that factor alone, we want to be near them,” host and comedian Joel McHale tells TVLine a few days before the broadcast. “Just the fact that they are allowing us to do it is a coup. Saturday Night Live, Season 41, Episode 3, “Tracy Morgan/Demi Lovato”

Airs Saturdays at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)

Host: All Tracy Morgan had to do was stand up on stage and crack a few jokes. Nobody had any right to expect Morgan to reach the kind of lunatic heights he did in his prime. But to watch Morgan come on SNL tonight, trot out all of his old staples from the show, and absolutely slay is one of the warmest, most uplifting moments to air in the history of TV. It’s an incredibly hard thing to articulate, because to just talk about how funny Tracy is tonight is bad writing, as is just listing adjectives for how inspiring his recovery is. But that’s the draw of it: Tonight is Tracy Morgan’s comeback and he’s still funnier than everyone else. Morgan’s...

Saturday Night Live Recap: Tracy Morgan Hosts
Tracy Morgan
For episode three, our host is former cast member and 30 Rock superstar Tracy Morgan. Morgan was in a serious car accident, which left him in critical condition, just sixteen months ago. In good news for comedy fans everywhere, Tracy has since made a full recovery, and in the last year he got married, made a wonderful speech at the Emmys, and is now hosting SNL. Yay! I’m very excited to see where this episode goes. Democratic Debate: The top five candidates for the Democratic ticket take part in a debate hosted by Anderson Cooper. This one was a bit long perhaps, but it was a strong opening to the episode and maybe the funniest political sketch yet this season. The biggest Marvel stars were out in London tonight (April 21) for the European premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Robert Downey Jr walked the press line in his most stylish casual wear, while Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen looked glamorous as ever.

It was all about cute couples, playful poses, and supersexy dresses at the La premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron on Monday night. Watch the Avengers play Family Feud with Jimmy Kimmel – plus photos from the Age of Ultron premiere
Last night, Avengers: Age of Ultron had its world premiere in Los Angeles, and the geek-inclined observed the premiere via Twitter from the comfort of their own couches.

Newcomers Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson joined Marvel regulars Iron Man and Age of Ultron’s Paul Bettany (in his second Marvel role!) and Captain America’s Anthony Mackie.

Also on hand were a couple actors with Marvel films in the pipe – Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd and Chadwick Boseman, our new Black Panther.

Before hitting the red carpet, however, the core Avengers – Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner – visited talk show host Jimmy Kimmel for a handful of lighthearted games, including Family Feud.

Our favourite part – as with the original Avengers (shawarma, y’all) – is Jimmy’s “after-credits sequence.”

Paul Rudd, Jimmy Kimmel trash room over lack of Avengers post-credits scene
Paul Rudd
Paul Rudd dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a bonus skit at the end of his Avengers special last night (April 13).

However, the pair were not happy to see that the episode lacked a post-credits scene, and proceeded to trash everything around them.

The sketch was a nod to Joss Whedon's recent comments that there will not be the usual post-credits scene at the end of Age of Ultron, breaking the Marvel Cinematic Universe's tradition.

However, the director did confirm that there will be a bonus scene midway through the credits.

Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner appeared together for a special epsiode of the ABC chat show last night, including a game of Family Feud.

Watch: Avengers: Age Of Ultron Cast Plays Family Feud with Jimmy Kimmel
Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth can get super serious on screen while saving the world, but in real life, the group clearly has no trouble letting loose and messing around. Shortly before the world premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron, they appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and participated in a slew of amusing bits including an Avengers edition of Family Feud. That one's definitely my favorite, but the "Science Bros" clip and the "Wall of America" Q&A are pretty amusing as well. Watch the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Cast Play a Game of Family Feud!
Nothing like a little friendly competition! The cast of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" battled it out in a fun game of Family Feud during their appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Monday night. Evans and Downey Jr. kicked off the game for round one. The first question: Name something you do in a movie theater besides watching a movie? The "Thor" star stepped into the hot seat for round two, competing against Ruffalo with a question of, "Besides superheroes, name a profession that requires you to wear tights." It's an inspired bit of silliness that features questions like, "Where's the worst place to turn into the Hulk?...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Blake Shelton Hosts SNL: What Were the Best and Worst Sketches?
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Blake Shelton has been the breakout comedic star of The Voice since its premiere in April 2011, and yet it’s taken ’til January 2015 for him to land a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live? (Whoever’s in charge of cross-promotional synergy at NBC has clearly been in a professional freefall since the demise of Law & Order: La.)

Better late than never, though, I suppose. The country music star proved an absolutely terrific choice of emcee — scoring laughs in a wide range of scenarios and not relying on cue cards nearly as much as you’d expect for a neophyte. I...

Bohemia Group Invades New Zealand; ‘Timbuktu’ To Screen In Paris Suburb After All
Ray Combs in Family Feud (1988)
Bohemia Group is expanding into New Zealand. The Hollywood-based international management firm has consolidated its yearlong collaboration with Gail Cowan of Gail Cowan Management, who will spearhead the new offices for Bohemia Australasia. Cowan, a longtime talent manager based in Auckland, will bring to the agency a pool of high-profile New Zealand actors, many of whom have had roles in the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings franchises. CEO Susan Ferris says: “I would like to think that we are leading the charge with this global way of doing business in management, and that you really don’t have to be trapped by geography anymore. Even though we are continuously building and expanding Bohemia, we will always keep our actors’ feet firmly planted on the ground, while they keep their heads in the clouds. Now we can do it without borders.” Ferris also has brought in two new La-based managers: Zach James,...

'The Price Is Right': Bob Barker praises Drew Carey for doing 'the type of thing I did'
Bob Barker thinks successor Drew Carey is doing "a fine job" as host of "The Price Is Right," but he also believes game shows in general aren't what they used to be.

The Emmy-winning daytime-tv legend will be seen again on the weekday CBS program Thursday, Dec. 12 -- the day he turns 90. It's part of a week of episodes celebrating the milestone and also highlighting a mission famously advocated by animal-rights crusader Barker: pet adoption.

The birthday episode was taped recently, and Barker confirms his return to the "Price" set was emotional. However, he also tells Zap2it of the genre, "Some of the shows that they have brought on, and that have disappeared, haven't really been game shows. Though they call them that."

Barker cites such current hosts as Carey, Wayne Brady (CBS' "Let's Make a Deal"), Steve Harvey (the syndicated "Family Feud") and Cedric the Entertainer ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,...

Kurt Russell Week Goes Overboard With Your On Duty Host, Brobocop!
Overboard (1987)

Starring: Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Edward Hermann

Writer: Leslie Dixon

Director: Garry Marshall

Review By: Eric King

Story:

A super hot/super bitchy heiress dumps workin’ man Dean Proffitt off her boat after he does a job that doesn’t meet her satisfaction. Later that night, she falls off the boat herself and suffers from amnesia. Her husband basically says “Fuck it! Party time!” and leaves her at the hospital. So, Dean develops a plan of revenge by convincing her that she’s his wife.

Review:

I wanna start off here by saying I am greatly appreciative to be given the privilege of bringing the sappiness to The Liberal Dead‘s Kurt Russell Appreciation Week. I jumped on this boat pretty late in the game, and Shawn Savage forewarned me as soon as he handed out the invitation that most of Russell’s iconic roles had already been taken.

Richard Dawson Of The Running Man Dead At 79
Actor, game show host Richard Dawson has passed away. According to TMZ, Dawson’s son, Gary Dawson, initially broke the news on Facebook:

“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my father passed away this evening from complications due to esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was an amazing talent, a loving husband, a great dad, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed but always remembered…”

A fan favorite, The Running Man wouldn’t have been the same without Dawson’s spot on portrayal of evil host Damon Killian. One of our readers says it best, “He was awesome on Family Feud and no less than iconic on Running Man. He Made that movie! Throwing him a T.V. kiss for the journey home. Rip Mr. Dawson.”

New York — Richard Dawson, the wisecracking British entertainer who was among the schemers in the 1960s sitcom "Hogan's Heroes" and a decade later began kissing thousands of female contestants as host of the game show "Family Feud" has died. He was 79.

Dawson, also known to TV fans as the Cockney Pow Cpl. Peter Newkirk on "Hogan's Heroes," died Saturday night from complications related to esophageal cancer at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, his son Gary said.

The game show, which initially ran from 1976 to 1985, pitted families who tried to guess the most popular answers to poll questions such as "What do people give up when they go on a diet?

He made his hearty, soaring delivery of the phrase "Survey says..." a national catchphrase among viewers.

'Iron Lady,' 'Streetcar' and 'Darkest Hour' Arrive on DVD and Blu-ray This Week
A Streetcar Named Desire (60th Anniversary Edition) It isn't the best week for new releases, but there are a couple of catalog titles worth considering, one a bit more likely to catch your interest than the other, which would be Warner's new Blu-ray release of A Streetcar Named Desire. When it comes to Marlon Brando's career The Godfather is most likely the film most associate with the actor, but I have to assume A Streetcar Named Desire is right there with On the Waterfront and Apocalypse Now if the "Family Feud" poll was to ask 100 people to "Name a Film Marlon Brando Starred In." I didn't get a chance to see this new transfer, but I think, for now, I'm quite satisfied with my DVD edition of the film since it isn't one I feel the need to return to all that often, though writing about it now is...

'Name That Tune' gets a modern reboot
Because there aren't enough music-themed shows and game shows out there: Production company FremantleMedia has secured the rights to "Name That Tune," reports Vulture.

The show tested competitors' musical knowledge in a head-to-head face-off, and it's been nearly 25 years since an original episode aired in the U.S.

Fremantle, which has its hand in music-minded ventures like "American Idol," "The X Factor" and "America's Got Talent," isn't the first to try rebooting the show -- MTV gave it a go in 2007, CBS in 2006. Neither came to fruition.

The company has successfully revived "Family Feud" and "Let's Make a Deal," and it managed the host transition from Bob Barker to Drew Carey on "The Price is Right." So perhaps it can succeed where others have failed?

Take a look at the show in its golden era:

Fantastic Fest Diary Day 5: Golden Slumber, Stake Land, Fantastic Feud, and the Awards
Days tend to blend together at a film festival. Thursdays feel like Mondays, a Saturday can feel like a Wednesday and so on. So the fact that Day Five of Fantastic Fest 2010 fell on a Monday only mattered when battling school buses in traffic. It still meant getting up early to secure tickets, a late morning nap, and then movies, movies, movies. In reality, though, Monday only brought two films: Yoshihiro Nakamura’s Golden Slumber and Jim Mickle’s Stake Land, before it was time to award the best films of the fest and feud it up. Hit the jump for all the details.

Golden Slumber

If The Fugitive was given a serious shot of nostalgia, it would be Golden Slumber. The latest film from director Yoshihiro Nakamura (who also did Fest favorite Fish Story) tells the story of a pseudo celebrity who is framed for killing the Prime Minister of Japan.
