The original portions were filmed in December 1974 and January 1975 in El Dorado, Arkansas. This original cut was released in theatres in 1975 under the title "Wheeler". (This original cut apparently no longer exists and was never released on video.) Additional footage was filmed in Hollywood, California in 1978/1979 including the flashback scenes with young Wheeler and the infamous Naked Barmaid scene. A new edit was then created and was slated to be released under the title "The Mama's Boy", and then "The Hurting". One sheets still exist for both "Wheeler" and "The Hurting" (though "The Hurting" never saw release). In 1980, producer/writer/director Jim Feazell sold the rights to the film. This led to the current choppy edit that exists under the title "Psycho from Texas". It should be noted that the original edits of the film (both "Wheeler" and "the Hurting") flowed more smoothly and didn't include the "choppy" sondtrack and somewhat confusing edit that exists in today's version.

Jim Feazell created a few short films in the 80's. First an anthology of classic stories: "The Monkey's paw", "The Ransom of Red Chief", and "The Escape of Texas Jack" (featuring Tommy Lamey who plays "slick" in Psycho From Texas"). He also filmed an anthology of five short horror stories titled "Horror Showcase" that features various stories about werewolf children, living babydolls, etc.
