Even if they couldn't pronounce their multi-syllabic, semi-Indigenous-sounding names, parents appreciated the camp's ample opportunities for their kids to learn new skills (while they get empty house for the summer). Meanwhile, kids got something so much greater: the sweet if fleeting taste of freedom. Before kids went to college, or even got their driver's permit, summer camp afforded young people the opportunity to experience a tiny bit of independence ... and mosquito bites. Dalene Young, the screenwriter whose credits included the coming-of-age comedy-drama Little Darlings, featuring Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol, and the Mary Steenburgen-starring drama Cross Creek, has died. She was 85.

Young died May 9 in Portland, Oregon, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, her husband, director Robert Martin Carroll, announced.

Young received a Daytime Emmy nomination for co-writing the 1999 Showtime children’s special Locked in Silence and landed a Christopher Award and a Humanitas Prize nomination for her work on the 1992 NBC telefilm Jonathan: The Boy Nobody Wanted.

She also wrote the films The Baby-Sitters Club (1995) and Baby Luv (2000) and other telefilms, including 1983’s Will There Really Be a Morning? — based on actress Frances Farmer’s autobiography — 2000’s The Last Dance and 2002’s Miss Lettie and Me.

“In her heyday, she was arguably the top writer of made-for-television movies,” her husband noted.

Tatum O’Neal is reflecting on the role that could have been.

The iconic actress, who made history at age 10 by winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1974’s “Paper Moon,” told Variety that her father — fellow actor and “Paper Moon” co-star Ryan O’Neal — forbid her from auditioning for “Taxi Driver.” Tatum was asked to audition for the Martin Scorsese feature after her Academy Award win; the film was released in 1976 with a 13-year-old Jodie Foster instead in the Oscar-nominated role of a child prostitute.

“My father said, ‘No, you can’t,'” Tatum said of Ryan restricting her budding career as a child star. She added that Ryan thought the part was “a little too naked.” Tatum continued, “And I never really recovered from that.”

Peter Bogdanovich's "Paper Moon" is a rip-roaring road movie with a lot of hijinks and heart, anchored by the incredible performances from real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neal. They play Moses Pray, a two-bit con artist who hoodwinks widows into purchasing Bibles, and Addie Loggins, a precocious nine-year-old with a permanent scowl who claims to be his daughter. With their streetwise charm, they unite to drive across the dusty Midwest, gradually increasing the stakes of their swindles. The sharp, black-and-white cinematography by László Kovács perfectly captures the sparse, unsentimental Depression-era America. Tatum O’Neal is breaking her silence in the wake of her dad Ryan O’Neal‘s death.

Ryan, who was best known for his roles in movies such as Love Story and The Main Event, passed away at the age of 82. The news was shared by his son Patrick on Friday (December 8).

On the same day, Tatum spoke out about what her father meant to her.

“I feel great sorrow with my father’s passing,” she said in a statement obtained by People. “He meant the world to me. I loved him very much and know he loved me too. I’ll miss him forever. and I feel very lucky that we ended on such good terms.”

Tatum, 60, has forged her own acting career, appearing in films such as Paper Moon, The Runaways, and Little Darlings.

Nicolas Coster, the soap opera stalwart who starred on Another World, Santa Barbara and All My Children and appeared in such films as All the President’s Men, Reds and Stir Crazy, has died. He was 89.

Coster died Monday in a hospital in Florida, his daughter Dinneen Coster announced on Facebook.

“Please remember him as a great artist,” she wrote. “He was an actor’s actor! I will always be inspired by him and know how lucky I am to have such a great father!!

A familiar character actor who often portrayed officious types, Coster played chief of detectives J.E. Carson on The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo and later recurred as the millionaire father of Lisa Whelchel’s Blair Warner on another 1980’s NBC sitcom, The Facts of Life.

Among them is "Rye Lane," a South London-set rom-com about two people who bond about bad breakups during a walk around the city they call home. /Film's Ben Pearson reviewed "Rye Lane" at Sundance, calling it "a love letter to the beauty and diversity of South London" and "a highly satisfying walk-and-talk romance." Banijay Kids & Family has bought UK drama specialist Kindle Entertainment and Italian animation firm Movimenti Production. The deals bring the total number of production within Banijay’s youth-focused arm across France, the UK and Italy to six, sitting alongside distribution, marketing and licencing arm, Zodiak Kids & Family Distribution.

Based in London, the female-led Kindle Entertainment is behind premium YA and family dramas such as Sky limited series Little Darlings and Netflix teen mystery The A List. It has also just launched trilogy of Ivy + Bean family films on the streamer, starring the likes of Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Jane Lynch.

Lionsgate had owned a minority stake in the business since late 2015. Deadline understands there had been a buy-out prior to today’s news and the Banijay deal was struck directly with its founders.

New Hires

Sky Studios Elstree, which will open later this year, has named Leavesden Studios sales VP Noel Tovey as managing director.

Tovey (pictured above) has also previously held senior leadership roles at Pinewood and Shepperton.

The studio boasts 13 sound stages over a 27.5 acre plot and will soon be home to productions from Comcast-owned Sky as well as sister company NBCUniversal. The first project to pitch up at the studio is Universal Pictures musical “Wicked,” which is set to star Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

“Noel has a vast range of experience within the industry and a deep knowledge of what productions want and need,” said Caroline Cooper, COO of Sky Studios. “I am delighted he’s joined Sky to lead our brilliant and growing team as we prepare to launch Sky Studios Elstree, the U.K.’s newest studio, later this year.”

Richard E. Grant bags guest role in ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ retelling

Withnail & I star Richard E. Grant has joined Disney+’s live-action drama Nautilus, with Muki Zubis (This is Going to Hurt) Benedict Hardie (The Luminaries), Jacob Collins Levy (Young Wallander) and Luke Arnold (Black Sails) also signing up to the cast. The show, from Moonriver TV and Seven Stories, is currently shooting at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland, Australia. The show tells Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea from the point of view of Indian prince Captain Nemo (Shazad Latif) for the first time. Grant will guest star as the leader of Karajaan, a port town Nemo and his crew encounter on their adventures.

Vue International appoints Chief Operating Officer

Privately-held European cinema operator Vue International has hired Claire Arksey as Chief Operating Officer. She joins from clothing store Urban Outfitters, where she was responsible for 269 standalone stores across 14 countries.

As committed as she’s been to acting since she broke out in 1980’s “Little Darlings,” Cynthia Nixon is equally committed to political activism. In 2018 she took a break from a thriving career to challenge Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York State primary, and managed to score 34 percent of the vote. She’s pleased that in the years since she put forward her progressive platform, much of it has passed, forging a path for less wealthy states to follow. Warner Bros., Studiocanal, and American Zoetrope today announce the forthcoming 4K restoration of the 1983 American coming-of-age drama, The Outsiders The Complete Novel, from Academy Award-winning visionary director Francis Ford Coppola. Created to give fans more of the action that took place in S.E. Hinton's celebrated book, Coppola's latest, definitive version includes new music, as well as several scenes cut from the theatrical version which were reconstructed from original camera negatives.

In a scam that might be reminiscent of a modern-day “Paper Moon,” Tatum O’Neal’s verified Twitter account has been hacked by a scammer who shills PlayStation 5 Video Game consoles.

The actor and writer came of age onscreen in movies such as 1974’s con-artist tale “Paper Moon”, “The Bad News Bears” (1976) and “Little Darlings” (1980). O’Neal has also written two best-selling memoirs — 2004’s “A Paper Life” and 2011’s “Found: A Daughter’s Journey Home” — chronicling her career and her tempestous life with her father and her ex-husband, John McEnroe.

The hacked O’Neal account’s PS5 scam has been happening for awhile, though it’s impossible to say how long, because the hacker (or hackers) actively deletes the tweets daily. It’s a tiny point on the Venn diagram where “based on a true story” and “Jackass” intersect, but Johnny Knoxville manages to find that sweet spot with “Action Point,” a movie that’s clearly inspired by the infamously perilous New Jersey attraction Action Park, whose deadly rides remain the stuff of legend decades after its gates were bolted shut.

Before Disney and Six Flags and other conglomerates put them out of business, there were seedy, shabby and no doubt unsafe amusement parks dotting the nation from coast to coast. “Action Point” would argue, albeit not always successfully, that what we gained in standards of security and safety, we lost in regional flavor and eccentricity as the United States grew more and more corporatized.

As post-“Jackass” movies go, “Action Point” makes more of an effort to sandwich some plot between the literally painful slapstick comedy, but if you love...

Exclusive: My Cousin Rachel director Roger Michel and producer Kevin Loader are teaming up under their Free Range Films banner on a feature adaptation of upcoming UK novel Little Darlings, which they have optioned from Madeleine Milburn Literary, TV & Film Agency.

Notting Hill director Michel will write and direct the feature adaptation, which is currently in development, while The Death Of Stalin and The Lady In The Van producer Loader will produce.

The debut novel, which was pre-empted in a “significant” six-figure deal by Harper Collins, spans the first five weeks following a traumatic childbirth. It will be published in spring 2019 in UK, Us (Crooked Lane) and Canada (Harper Collins). Free Range secured the deal with Hayley Steed at Madeleine Milburn.

Actress Margaret “Maggie” Blye, whose credits included the 1969 film “The Italian Job,” “Walking Tall” and “Little Darlings,” died on March 24, a spokesperson for Blye said. She was 73. According to the spokesperson, Blye died peacefully in her West Hollywood home following a two-year battle with cancer, with her brother and sister at her side. Born in Houston, Blye attended the University of Texas before transferring to UCLA in her senior year. Nick Fink ("Glee"), Katie Chang ("Bling Ring"), Brandon Mychal Smith ("You're the Worst"), Eliza Bennett ("Nanny McPhee") and Taylor Dearden ("Breaking Bad") are set to star in MTV's new dark half-hour comedy pilot "Little Darlings".

The story follows two unlikely friends named Jules (Bennett) and Ophelia (Dearden) who take justice into their own hands and kick ass on their college campus. FX has ordered a first season of former "Community" actor and rapper Donald Glover's half-hour comedy series "Atlanta". Glover, Dianne McGunigle and Paul Simms will serve as executive producers on the series which airs next year.

Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Lee Stanfield and Zazie Beetz also star in the series which revolves around two cousins on their way up through the Atlanta rap scene.

Kino Lorber was right to bring out Foxes (1980) in Blu-ray under their Kl Studio Classics series. The elegant re-issue seems aimed at convincing film snobs that this little gem from the last days of disco finally deserves their attention after a distance of 35 years, during which time it was either dismissed as another insignificant teen comedy of the ‘80s, or as a guilty pleasure. But longtime champions of the film, myself included, need no convincing. We owned the clamshell VHS, we owned the first-generation DVD, and now, if anything, I’d venture to say we feel vindicated that it now carries the stamp as a bonafide classic by a home video label as respected as Kino Lorber. On Wednesday night, People caught up with the actress at the Love Boat reunion in Fort Lauderdale, where the cast gathered to christen a new Regal Princess cruise ship and celebrate 50 years of Princess Cruises. Acute portrayals and nice performances by leads Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen as best friends who pledge to lose their virginity before college, helps this mildly racy but ultimately innocuous teen sex film Very Good Girls stay a step or two above the exploitative premise to emerge as something almost worthwhile. Boyd Holbrook also gives more than the role calls for as the handsome street artist who becomes their would-be conquest. His role is believable and even brings out Fanning’s performance, delivering something that could have been icky, but remains tender and even a tad affecting. Olsen is good as well, but Fanning’s always seemed a lightweight before.

The problem with Very Good Girls (besides the 25-year old Ms. Olsen being far too old for this role) is that, despite the sexually tinged subject matter, the script is never fleshed out beyond what’s needed to service the plot.

Summer camp starts for kids everywhere this week, and that got us thinking about great summer-camp movies. There are the classics that show us the traditional camp experiences, including Meatballs, Little Darlings, Meatballs II, The Parent Trap, Meatballs 4, Ernest Goes to Camp and Lolita, as well as the horror flicks Friday the 13th and its sequels, and Sleepaway Camp and its sequels. There's also Indian Summer for nostalgic adults.  Now, though, there are all kinds of niche overnight camps, and occasionally we get movies specificaly tied to, say, fat camps (Heavy Weights), magic camps (Magic Camp) and musical theater camps (Camp). Chicago – Every fall in the Chicagoland area, it’s “The Hollywood Show.” This annual event showcases celebrities from TV and film, both current and from the nostalgic past, greeting fans and signing autographs. The September of 2013 show featured “I Dream of Jeannie” TV show personalities Barbara Eden and Bill Daily, plus notable cast reunions of TV’s “My Three Sons” and the 1973 film version of “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

Since 2003's Dead Like Me, Bryan Fuller has been doling out delicious TV treats that enriched our minds, bodies and souls. His latest, Hannibal, is undoubtedly Fuller's heaviest project to date, but the Ep extraordinaire is elated fans have found moments of levity -- and light -- while dissecting the decadence infused into every incredibly layered episode.

Thankfully the first season is headed to DVD and true Hannibal fans (or, fannibals as they've come to be called) can meticulously now pour over every museum-worthy visual, staging choice and knowing glance between the characters for subliminal meanings.

Best Original Song and Best Original Score Oscar 2014 live concert (photo: Singer Adele Oscar winner) In 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will sponsor a live concert featuring the nominees in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories. The source for this information is not an Academy press release, but an internal email from Music Branch governors Charles Fox (Nine to Five, Little Darlings), Arthur Hamilton (Zero Hour!, Madron), and David Newman (The Nutty Professor, Behaving Badly) that found its way into the Deadline.com inbox. The Academy’s concert is to be held at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus in Westwood on Thursday, February 27, 2014, three days before the March 2 Oscarcast. As per the Academy’s email, "a symphony orchestra of Los Angeles studio musicians will perform a suite from each score of up to 10 minutes in length. Subject to availability, each original composer will conduct his/her own work.

Way back in May of 2011, Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen signed onto the drama Very Good Girls, from first time director Naomi Foner. The indie project now continues to move forward, bringing on Anton Yelchin to co-star.

The screenplay, which was also written by Naomi Foner, is an updated version of the 1980 teen cult drama Little Darlings. The story follows lifelong best friends who decided to spend their first summer out of high school trying to lose their virginity. They both end up falling for the same boy, played by Anton Yelchin, which causes unforeseen problems in their own relationship.

Very Good Girls will shoot this June in and around New York City.

Very Good Girls comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen, Anton Yelchin, Peter Sarsgaard, Dustin Hoffman, Sissy Spacek. The film is directed by Naomi Foner.
