‘Night Always Comes’: How Benjamin Caron and Vanessa Kirby Went from the Royal Family to Working-Class America
Image
In 2018, The Crown star Vanessa Kirby submitted the Benjamin Caron-directed episode, “Beryl,” en route to an Emmy nomination. The now Oscar-nominated actor and Emmy-winning EP-director worked together a handful of times on Peter Morgan’s Emmy-winning series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, so they decided to keep a good thing going once they made their respective exits from the Buckingham Palace set.

In 2020, the pandemic threw one potential film project of theirs into disarray, but they eventually bounced back in 2024 when Kirby’s Aluna Entertainment and Caron’s Square Eyed Pictures set up an adaptation of Willy Vlautin’s novel The Night Always Comes at Netflix. With the help of their producing partners Jodie Caron (Square Eyed) and Lauren Dark (Aluna), Caron and Kirby have now brought the book about gentrification in Portland to the screen, as Kirby’s poly-employed Lynette has one night to stave off...

Sharon Stone Headlined An Awful Remake Of A Beloved '80s Crime Thriller
Image
During the back half of the 1980s, there was this glamorous, extravagantly talented actor who kept turning up in exploitation movies and pumping them full of an erotic verve they generally didn't deserve. There were any number of beautiful, desirable ladies who could provide the va-va-voom films like "King Solomon's Mines," "Above the Law," and "Action Jackson" required, but the path to stardom has always been different for women, so here was Sharon Stone blowing everyone else who shared a frame with her straight off the screen.

It took no less a cinematic genius than Paul Verhoeven to realize that Stone had supernova star power. After a test run in "Total Recall," he unleashed her on filmgoers the world over with the most stylishly sleazy studio movie ever made in "Basic Instinct." Stone's portrayal of Catherine Tramell is a femme fatale dynamo who belongs in the pantheon alongside Barbara Stanwyck's Phyllis Dietrichson,...

Sam Smith Feels Light as a Feather on New Single ‘To Be Free’
Image
Five years ago, Sam Smith underwent an especially transformative period in their life. It was around the time that they were recording their fourth studio album, Gloria, an expansion of their creative vision that overlapped with an embrace of self-liberation. But the key to that transformation — an earnest ballad they wrote during those sessions titled “To Be Free” — was shelved for the time being. Smith didn’t believe it was a fit for the record. Now, after living with it for so long, they’re sharing it in hopes that...

Before Friends, Matthew Perry Starred In A Sitcom That's Nearly Impossible To Watch Today
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If you've read Matthew Perry's memoir, "Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing," you'll know how important fame was to the young actor. Perry, who sadly passed away in 2023, wrote about how, prior to playing Chandler Bing in "Friends" and becoming a global megastar, fame seemed as though it would "change everything" for him. "I yearned for it more than any other person on the face of the planet," he wrote. "It was the only thing that would fix me. I was certain of it."

Though he would eventually get his wish and quickly find out that it wasn't quite the salve he expected, Perry spent years trying to attain fame and recognition. It didn't come quickly. The actor made his first on-screen appearance as a child in the TV series "240-Robert" back in 1979. But after moving to Los...

Rai Cinema Celebrates ‘Heads or Tails?’ at Cannes and Readies for More Hits: ‘Cinema Without Audience Doesn’t Exist’
Image
It was all about Wild West myths and classy Negronis as Rai Cinema celebrated “Heads or Tails?” in Cannes on Thursday.

Presented in Un Certain Regard and directed by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, the surreal western follows Rosa (Nadia Tereszkiewicz), who, trapped in an unhappy marriage, flees with daredevil Santino (Alessandro Borghi). Many go after them, including Buffalo Bill (John C. Reilly).

“It’s a very original film and I think it will have a great impact. Not only in Italy, but in the world. It touches upon themes that are universal. There’s love, power and a little bit of politics,” CEO of Rai Cinema Paolo del Brocco told Variety at the event.

“It’s difficult to invent new things in cinema, but we hope more original films will come [in the future]. When we see a new idea, we invest a lot in it. We want it to be done well.

Ink always knew she was going to become an “icon magnet” and a prolific artist in her own right. She remembers standing in the streets near the Georgia Dome with her guitar, busking alongside ticket scalpers and fans as they piled in to see Beyoncé and Jay Z on their 2014 On the Run tour.

Kendrick Lamar Commands Home Crowd as Sza Brings Out Lizzo for Surprise Duet During the First Night of L.A. Tour Stop
Image
Kendrick Lamar once again demonstrated why he raps “Eff the big three, it’s just me” during the first of his three sold out L.A. show dates on the Grand National Tour on Wednesday evening. The Compton rapper didn’t bring out any hometown heroes for his SoFi Stadium showing, commanding the stage all by himself, except for a small group of backup dancers and select duets with his co-headliner Sza.

Kendrick began his set with “wacced out murals,” emerging from his signature black 1987 Buick Gnx atop the stage as he rapped the lyrics from the first song off of his latest album named after the car. Another Gnx favorite, “squabble up,” followed before Kendrick took a trip back to 2017 with “Element.” and 2015 with “King Kunta” before coming right back to the present day with “tv off.”

It was after those four tracks that longtime collaborator Sza had her...

Chile Launches New Perks, Asian Outreach as It Debuts Oscar-Winning Sebastián Lelio’s ‘The Wave’ at Cannes
Image
Chile marks a standout year at Cannes with “The Wave” from Oscar and Berlinale winner Sebastián Lelio playing in the Cannes Premiere sidebar and “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo” from Cannes Cinéfondation winner Diego Cespedes, world premiering at Un Certain Regard.

“The Wave” is a musical inspired by the 2018 feminist protests in Chile while “Flamingo” is an LGBTQ-themed drama set in a mining town. They highlight the diversity of Chilean cinema—ranging from an Oscar-winning veteran to a debut feature director—as Chile moves forward with collaboration agreements in Asia and aims to attract international shoots through new tax incentives, leveraging its rich talent pool and diverse locations.

Both films quickly secured sales agents ahead of their Cannes showings, with FilmNation Entertainment boarding “The Wave” and Charades snagging Diego Céspedes’ pic, which is lead produced by Chile’s Quijote Films and Les Valseurs, France.

“La Ola’s selection at Cannes is an immense joy.

David di Donatello Awards Spotlight Female Directors as ‘Vermiglio’ Leads With Historic Wins
Maura Delpero
The 70th David di Donatello Awards, held at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, marked a pivotal moment for Italian cinema as women filmmakers emerged at the forefront of the country’s most prestigious film honors. Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio dominated the evening, winning seven awards, while major honors were also claimed by Valeria Golino and Margherita Vicario, signaling a broad shift in creative leadership and recognition.

Delpero’s wartime drama, set in 1944 in an isolated Alpine village, earned the top prizes: Best Film and Best Director. She became the first woman to receive the directing award in the seven-decade history of the event. Only two women had previously taken the Best Film category. Vermiglio also collected awards for Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound, Casting, and Production. These achievements reflect both the artistic ambition of the film and its technical command across multiple disciplines.

The narrative of Vermiglio follows the disruption caused by...

David di Donatello Awards: Maura Delpero’s War Drama ‘Vermiglio’ Wins Best Film
Image
Maura Delpero’s Italian WW2 drama Vermiglio won best film at the 70th David Di Donatello awards, Italy’s version of the Oscars, held at Rome’s historic Cinecittà film studio on Wednesday night. Delpero also took best directing honors en route to a 7-trophy sweep.

The film, which had its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival last year, beat out the two award frontrunners, Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope, a sumptuous, occasionally surreal tribute to his hometown of Naples, and Andrea Segre’s The Great Ambition, a political biopic about Italian Communist Party leader Enrico Berlinguer, which lead the pack going into the David awards with 15 nominations each. Parthenope went away empty-handed, but The Great Ambition took two awards: Best actor for Elio Germano, who play Berlinguer, and best editing for Jacopo Quadri.

“None of these people are famous”: Ed O’Neill Was Convinced ‘Modern Family’ Was Doomed Before It Even Started
Image
Ed O’Neill charmed fans as Jay Pritchett on Modern Family for 11 long years. While Sofia Vergara’s Gloria is widely considered to be the face of the sitcom, O’Neill’s Jay Pritchett is considered to be the soul of the series. As such, it is no wonder that he worked so hard to bring his best work forward for the show.

Well, it checks out since O’Neill has admitted himself that he was so impressed by the script that he even changed his initial decision not to do a sitcom again after Married…With Children.

However, his anxieties about the show reared anew soon after that. The reason behind that was that during his first table read with the rest of the cast members, he realized that he might have been wrong about the show after all.

Ed O’Neill was convinced that Modern Family would never be made...

‘Somebody Somewhere’s’ Jeff Hiller on Joel’s journey, connecting with fans, and improv that made the cut
Image
Jeff Hiller is perfectly satisfied with where his character, Joel, landed at the conclusion of HBO's comedy series Somebody Somewhere. “He had gotten some of the things on his vision board, and I also loved that he didn’t get everything. I think that’s more realistic,” he tells Gold Derby. Hiller particularly appreciated that the series ended highlighting the friendship that had been built between Sam (Bridget Everett) and Joel over the past three seasons. “It’s reaffirming that that is the central love story of this show,” he shares.

When Hiller first read the role of Joel at the start of Somebody Somewhere, what struck him most was that the character was an openly gay Christian — and that his faith wasn’t portrayed as a source of trauma or horror. “The church didn’t represent this terror, and I’m not saying that there aren’t some bad churches out there,...

Image
The 2025 Tribeca Festival has set its selection of shorts across narrative, documentary, animated works and music videos.

Expanded eligibility to projects previously screened in New York or online for out-of-competition consideration led to record submissions and 93 short films this year, a high among major fests.

The music video lineup curated by Sharon Badal, spans the world premiere of Kid Cudi’s new short film Neverland, directed by Ti West and produced by Monkeypaw Productions; Rock the Bells from LL Cool J; Jack White’s That’s How I’m Feeling; and Madame President by Grace Bowers.

Tribeca, which runs June 4–15 in NYC, is also deepening its investment in shorts by introducing the inaugural Shorts Cinema screening room at its Spring Studios festival hub to allow more filmmakers and fans to discover the next generation of independent film, where shorts are often a first stop.

“This year we received a staggering number of short submissions,...

Looking Back at Kendrick Lamar’s Fiery Diss Aimed At Drake That Broke All Barriers
Image
Super Bowl Lix was an action-packed and thrilling event, with the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to claim their second franchise trophy. However, the excitement wasn’t just about the game; Kendrick Lamar’s electrifying halftime performance also stole the spotlight.

K.Dot headlined the halftime show alongside Sza this year, performing their hit collaboration. However, the night wasn’t just about chart-topping duets and feel-good moments—the 37-year-old Humble rapper also used the stage to bring up his ongoing feud with Drake.

Drake and Lamar have been beefing since April 2024, after Kendrick made the song Like That, in which he says:

“Motherf*ck the big three, ni**a, it’s just big me,”

It was in response to Drake’s verse in First Person Shooter:

“Love when they argue the hardest Mc, Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me? We the big three like we started a league.

Image
Ed O’Neill’s stint as Jay Pritchett in Modern Family has been widely appreciated by fans. His heartwarming character and dynamic relationship with Sofia Vergara’s Gloria drew fans from around the world.

Interestingly, he wasn’t always so keen on joining the show, as he had grown tired of acting in sitcoms. However, he changed his mind quickly once he got the script.

Unfortunately for him, though, by then he almost lost the role to another fellow comedian and iconic Disney star as the creators thought the latter would create more of an impact. Ultimately, however, luck ended up favoring him, and thus began his journey of bringing the iconic character to life.

Decrypting the Symbolism in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show
Image
Ahead of Sunday night, Kendrick Lamar promised to deliver “storytelling” in his Super Bowl Halftime performance in New Orleans. And, while dropping a career-spanning set over 13 minutes amid dancers clad in red, white and blue, the multi-platinum-selling rapper and this year’s Grammy Awards darling spun a narrative equally about a politically divided America (while still putting a nail in the coffin of his feud with rapper Drake).

Before the lights went up on Lamar as he launched into the performance, which marked the Super Bowl’s first-ever solo rap halftime show, the field at Caesar’s Superdome was lit into nine squares with Xs, Os and triangles popping up within. A familiar face appeared on the floor as iconic actor Samuel L. Jackson, dressed as American icon Uncle Sam, welcomed the audience to “the great American game.” Lights in the stadium crowd spelled out: Start Here above a downward pointing arrow squarely on Lamar,...

Kendrick Lamar Previews “Storytelling” at Super Bowl Halftime Show as “Not Like Us” Speculation Swirls
Image
Three days ahead of his hotly-anticipated Super Bowl halftime performance and four days after taking home five Grammys, Kendrick Lamar previewed his upcoming performance at the NFL’s season closer, saying that audiences should expect “storytelling” that will help his biggest audience yet immerse themselves in his music.

The 37-year-old multi-platinum selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper, who received even more accolades at the Grammys, winning record of the year, song of the year, best rap performance, best rap song and best music video for his massive summer hit, “Not Like Us,” spoke about his plans for the big game at a Thursday press conference.

But Lamar was mum on details. The rapper did not reveal any new guest artists who may join him on stage at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans or whether he’ll perform his contentious Grammy-winning hit, but he did put Sunday’s show in context with...

“Gloria was the one that made Jay change”: Sofia Vergara Being the Highest Paid Actor in ‘Modern Family’ Makes Sense for Many Reasons
Image
Jay Pritchett might’ve been the patriarch of Modern Family, but Gloria was the literal game-changer. She shook up his old-school ways, brought the energy, and made sure no one underestimated her. And off-screen, Sofia Vergara did the exact same thing.

Being the highest-paid actor on the show was proof that Vergara’s presence was the selling point.

Gloria didn’t just shake up Jay’s world; she practically saved the Pritchett family. Before she arrived, they were a little… well, disconnected. Mitch and Claire weren’t that close, Jay was stuck in his old ways, and big family gatherings weren’t exactly a thing.

And then came Gloria. She softened Jay,...

In 2018, he made an English-Language remake, this time set in America, and starring Julianne Moore as the titular Gloria Bell. “We wanted him but the network didn’t”: ‘Modern Family’ Creator Had to Convince Studio to Cast Its Best Actor Who Was Once Homeless
Image
There’s no way we can imagine Modern Family in any other format or with different actors than the ones who ended up playing the respective characters. It feels wrong to mess with the show that left a lasting legacy in television.

However, when the creators of the show, Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd look back on their time in developing the show, they can recount numerous challenges that hindered their progress.

One such challenge? Finding the right cast for the show. Considering it’s an ensemble series, the creators wanted each actor to bring authenticity to the table and truly embrace the essence of the diverse characters.

Nobody can be Phil Dunphy except Ty Burrell

Martin Scorsese Collaborator Believes They Disappointed The Filmmaker When HBO's One-Season Series With 74% Rt Score Was Cancelled
Image
Recurring Martin Scorsese collaborator Bobby Cannavale reveals he believes he disappointed the director after the cancellation of their 2016 TV show. Cannavale made his screen debut in Sidney Lumet's 1996 crime drama Night Falls on Manhattan and followed it up with the HBO television film When Trumpets Fade in 1998. He then rose to prominence on the TV crime-drama series Third Watch, and scored roles in big screen crime-thrillers such as Gloria, The Bone Collector, and 3 A.M., before achieving greater recognition with a supporting role in Will & Grace.

His breakout role came with the 2012 crime drama Boardwalk Empire, one of the best TV period dramas set in the 1920s, in which he played the role of Gyp Rosetti. Scorsese produced the show for HBO, which ran for five seasons, and directed the pilot episode. Cannavale would team up with him again with the epic crime film The Irishman in 2019. However,...
