Several years have passed since 12-year-old Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) fought off and killed mass murderer Jason Voorhees at Camp Crystal Lake. Now grown, Tommy (John Shepherd) is still fighting off nightmares and hallucinations about the experience. Having been moved from various mental institutions, he is newly assigned to Pinehurst, a rural halfway house for troubled teens. Suddenly, the murders begin again as another hockey-masked killer begins killing people at and around the halfway house.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is the fifth movie in the Friday the 13th series, preceded by Vendredi 13 (1980) (1980), Le Tueur du vendredi (1981) (1981), Meurtres en 3 dimensions (1982) (1982), and Vendredi 13 : Chapitre final (1984) (1984) and followed by Vendredi 13, chapitre VI : Jason le mort-vivant (1986) (1986), Vendredi 13, chapitre VII : Un nouveau défi (1988) (1988), Vendredi 13, chapitre VIII : L'Ultime Retour (1989) (1989), Jason va en enfer (1993) (1993), Jason X (2001) (2001), and Freddy contre Jason (2003) (2003). The storyline and screenplay for A New Beginning was written by Martin Kitrosser, David Cohen, and Danny Steinmann.

The old UK VHS misses out several scenes containing violence or nudity and has been cut for about 80 seconds, to have achieved a rating of 18 by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
