Friday the 13th: Worst Kills in the Franchise
Image
Another Friday the 13th is upon us, which means it’s time to watch and celebrate the Friday the 13th franchise. Here on Arrow in the Head, we’ve previously talked about the best kills in the Friday the 13th films, and there are some all-time greats in this series. With weapons as varied as bladed implements, liquid nitrogen, and his own bare hands, the legendary Jason Voorhees has made blood spray, eyes pop, and bones shatter, tossed around that dream stalker from Elm Street, and even punched someone’s head clean off their body… But with this article, we wanted to do something different. Going in the opposite direction from the kill celebration, we’ve now compiled a list of what we consider to be the Worst Kills in the Franchise. Check out our picks, then let us know which kills you consider to be the worst by leaving a comment below!

This legendary horror franchise is celebrating its 45th anniversary today
Image
It's a fantastic day for horror enthusiasts, particularly fans of the slasher genre. Today, one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time celebrates an impressive milestone. Friday the 13th has terrified and thrilled audiences for 45 years! It's the franchise's 45th anniversary, meaning it's been 45 years since the original 1980 movie first introduced us to Camp Crystal Lake and the unforgettable horror legend, Jason Voorhees.

What started as a modest, low-budget slasher quickly exploded into a full-blown pop culture juggernaut, spanning 12 films, inspiring countless Halloween costumes, video games, comic books, merchandise, and giving rise to one of the most iconic figures in horror movie history. There wouldn't be slashers like Scream or even Terrifier without the blood-soaked trail Friday the 13th blazed through the genre. Its legacy shaped the slasher blueprint that filmmakers still follow today, where isolated settings, masked killers, and shocking and brutal kills became genre staples.

Ryan Cultrera
The horror genre is best known for its “Final Girls,” and JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with several popular Final Girls at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California. Foree has over 100 screen acting credits to his name and, in recent years, has been a regular in Rob Zombie movies, showing up in the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween, and The Lords of Salem – but before he teamed up with Zombie, he was known to genre fans for playing heroic characters in George A. Friday the 13th Fans Get an Amazing Streaming Surprise for January
Image
Fans of the Friday the 13th movie series have a good reason to go binge-watch the original series of eight films from Paramount Pictures.

As reported by ComicBook, the first eight Friday the 13th films have been made available to watch for free on the free streaming platform Pluto TV. This includes all of the original movies to have Friday the 13th as part of the title, all of which were made under the Paramount umbrella. They are also the complete set of films from the franchise to be released in the 1980s, with the eighth film dropping in 1989. For some fans of the franchise, it marked the end of an era before the ninth installment, Jason Goes to Hell, took the movie series in a wildly different direction.

Ranking The Friday the 13th Franchise – 45 Years of the Violent Voorhees Family
Image
When Friday the 13th (1980) was first released into theaters, there was not a lot of hope for a sustained franchise. After all, they knock off most of the characters and the villain out of the gate. Yet in the last days of filming, Jason Voorhees made his first appearance, and Friday the 13th became a twelve-film phenomenon. With December 13th falling on a Friday, it’s a perfect time to revisit the fun franchise.

12. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)

It’s almost unfair to rank this movie this low. However, Friday the 13th Part V is a mess from beginning to end. After Corey Feldman’s cameo, it takes more than twenty-five minutes for Jason to return to the screen. Even then, it’s not the Voorhees we’ve come to love. The result was so disastrous, that producers decided to bring Jason back from the dead immediately.

The Only Four Friday The 13th Movies That Take Place On The Correct Date
Image
Director/producer Sean S. Cunningham has admitted that his 1980 slasher film "Friday the 13th" was a deliberate effort to imitate the style and success of John Carpenter's "Halloween," which had come out only two years prior. Cunningham tried to copt Carpenter's "killer's eye perspective" camera angles, and it's no coincidence that both films take place on dates famous for horror, bad luck, and death. Cunningham's gambit was successful, though, and his $550,000 movie ended up making nearly $60 million at the box office. It also spawned 11 sequels, many of which came to define the horror trends of the '80s. Although none of the "Friday the 13th" movies are particularly beloved by critics, they are a gestalt-defining phenomenon.

Holiday-themed horror films began popping up regularly in theaters. The years after "Friday the 13th" saw the release of "April Fool's Day," "New Year's Evil," "Prom Night," and "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

But...

Ranking the Jason Voorhees Actors on a Wintery Friday the 13th
Image
Few franchises own a day of the year, but even fewer own an inconsistent date. That inconsistency helps make every Friday the 13th feel like a surprise in its own right, which makes any time to celebrate Jason Voorhees a worthwhile occasion. With that in mind, one of the cooler aspects of the franchise has been a rotating group of actors, each with their own spin on Jason Voorhees. Don’t get us wrong, a lot of this comes down to the directors and quality of the movies, but each brings something unique to the role.

Ranking the Jason Voorhees Actors 13. Dick Wieand (Friday the 13th: A New Beginning)

Well, sorry if you didn’t know that Dick Wieand plays Roy, who becomes Jason. However, A New Beginning a shockingly bad entry as a whole. His ninety-ish seconds are indicative of the poor quality of the movie overall. Nothing against Wieand,...

Every Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)
Image
The Friday the 13thfranchise has an interesting timeline thanks to the fictional history of its main killer, Jason Voorhees, and his apparent immortality. The story of the Friday the 13th movies chronologically stretches from the 1950s to 25th century, with a reboot and a crossover movie making things even more complicated. Watching the Friday the 13th movies in order isn't a difficult task, though the timeline of events can be confusing as, while all the movies do revolve around the titular day, not all of them give a year for when the events take place.

The chronological order of the Friday the 13th movies starts off simple enough, as most of the first three sequels take place over one continuous stretch of time. However, things start to become more difficult to follow after the first of Jason's on screen deaths, which prompts a brief hiatus for the character, a resurrection...

Where to Stream All the ‘Friday the 13th’ Movies Right Now
Image
Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).

Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

Friday The 13th: Every Version Of Jason Voorhees Without His Mask
Image
Jason Voorhees has become synonymous with his iconic hockey mask, which has kept the "Friday the 13th" franchise in the public consciousness despite Jason having not appeared in an official, franchise capacity since the 2009 remake. It's the result of some legal issues between the franchise and the character's creators, but that dang hockey mask has guaranteed that just like the slasher villain who wears it, Jason Voorhees will never die. Hardcore horror fans know that the hockey mask didn't show up until "Friday the 13th Part III," but even more interesting is how Jason has been presented behind the mask or in a few instances, without it completely.

Jason Voorhees has been through it over the years. He's drowned (more than once), been struck in the head with an axe, impaled through the skull with his own machete, hacked to bits, chained to the bottom of a lake, taken a boat propeller to the throat,...

Every Actor Who Played Jason Voorhees In Friday the 13th Movies, Ranked
Image
Throughout the Friday the 13th series, many actors have played the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, some better than others. Jason Voorhees cycled through looks and costumes across the years, as well as actors, many of whom only played the character once. The films sometimes brought in different actors in each movie to stand in for Jason when he wasn't wholly on screen, but each movie generally has one or, in some cases, two actors associated with the role. Many shots of the killer remain faceless, mirroring Jason's menacing yet sneaky killing style.

Jason Voorhees typically wears a hockey mask when his face is shown, which has become synonymous with the killer. The character design allowed him to be played solely by stuntmen since throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason kills but doesn't speak. With a series that is over 40 years old with many film and television installments, fans are...

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Derek Mears in Vendredi 13 (2009)
It’s Friday the 13th, and we have decided to celebrate by releasing a new episode of the What Happened to This Horror Movie? video series that digs into one of the more divisive entries in the Friday the 13th film franchise: the fifth entry, 1985’s Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (watch it Here), a movie that doesn’t have Jason Voorhees or his mother doing the killing. ‘Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker’ 4K Review – Why This 1981 Movie Is Begging for Reappraisal
Image
Between its striking title, lurid artwork, and the timing of its release — 1981 bore the likes of Halloween II, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Funhouse, The Prowler, and Happy Birthday to Me — one might mistake Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (also known as Night Warning) for a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. While it vaguely fits in the slice-and-dice mold, the film is anything but generic.

The prologue — which may have inspired Final Destination 2‘s unforgettable opening sequence — was directed by Michael Miller with cinematography by Jan de Bont, but Miller was let go by the production after falling behind schedule. He was replaced by TV veteran William Asher, who shot the remainder of the film with Robbie Greenberg as director of photography.

14 years after his parents were killed in an over-the-top car crash, Billy Lynch witnesses his infantilizing aunt-turned-guardian, Cheryl Roberts, kill a repair man in cold blood.

The multimedia series began with the 1980 movie of the same name, which followed the doomed counselors working to rehabilitate the closed Camp Crystal Lake and has since expanded to include 12 movies, an in-name-only television show about cursed antiques, several video games, comics, and more, with the majority of the properties featuring the hockey-masked serial killer Jason Voorhees. The most recently announced installment in the franchise is a planned Peacock prequel series with A24 and Bryan Fuller, though the showrunner recently departed the project.

Per IGN, Horror, Inc. has announced their intention to expand the...

Episode 30 of 80s Horror Memories exhumes Day of the Dead and The Return of the Living Dead
Emma Stone and Jonah Hill in Maniac (2018)
JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

The Correct Order To Watch The Friday The 13th Movies
Image
The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.

In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Fashion Friday The 13th: All Of Jason Voorhees' Looks, Ranked
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise has seen many revisions of Jason Voorhees' iconic outfit, with each movie revealing a different stage in his character journey. Not every costume is created equal, with some of Jason's looks being less impressive than others. The fake Jason in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning lacks screen time and doesn't live up to the real Jason's official look. Some of Jason's looks, like the one in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, feature impressive makeup and visual design, showcasing a frighteningly rotten visage and distressed outfit.

In the Friday the 13th franchise, seeing the Jason Voorhees outfit in each movie reveals where he is at in his character journey. Though possessing an iconic look, no other slasher villain has gone through as many revisions as Jason. Except for the first movie, the franchise follows Jason Voorhees, who seemingly drowned as a...

The Worst Sequel In Every Major Horror Movie Franchise
Image
Unimaginative horror movie sequels can kill the goodwill of even the most popular franchises, with rushed plots and lackluster additions. Weak character development, excessive gore, and a reliance on overused tropes can diminish the impact of a horror movie sequel. Straying too far from the essence of the franchise and failing to recapture the essence of the original can leave viewers unsatisfied with a sequel.

The most popular horror franchises master the art of amassing devoted followings and raking in financial gains, but even the biggest horror franchises have a few sequel duds. Horror franchises usually manage to craft follow-ups that are just as enthralling as their predecessors, and there are clearly sequels that stand as the best in horror movie franchises. However, amidst those shining gems, there's always a chapter in the saga that stands out as the weakest link. This underscores the delicate balance between maintaining a profitable...

The Unmade Sequel To 2009's Friday The 13th Opened With An Extended Winter Bloodbath
Image
Just as the "Halloween" movies all take place in the fall, the "Friday the 13th" movies are summer films.

For the most part, all 12 extant "Friday" movies take place around Camp Crystal Lake, an overnight camp in the woods of New Jersey. Jason Voorhees, the campfire story goes, was left to drown in Crystal Lake as a boy when the counselors tasked with watching him were distracted by their libidos. He's now back to revenge-kill all horny teens. Once the summer is over, however,  the campfire story ends.

However, Friday the 13th -- that is, the famously unlucky calendar date -- doesn't always fall in the summer. 2021 had a Friday the 13th in August, but the next one wouldn't arrive until May of 2022. 2023 was strange in that it had a Friday the 13th in both January and in October.

If Jason Voorhees prefers to attack camp counselors on the title date,...

Friday the 13th Writers Reveal Opening Kill Script Page For Scrapped 2009 Reboot Sequel
Image
The opening kill from an unmade Friday the 13th sequel has been revealed, featuring a character named Val being brutally killed by Jason Voorhees. The script had an extended winter opening sequence before the main plot of reopening the summer camp. Screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift shared the unused script page on Friday the 13th, honoring the date and giving fans a glimpse of what could have been.

An opening kill from the unmade Friday the 13th sequel has been revealed. The horror franchise began with the 1980 eponymous slasher movie, which followed counselors being murdered as they worked to reopen the supposedly cursed Camp Crystal Lake. Although the character of Jason Voorhees was introduced as a child in the original, he didn't appear in his iconic form as a fully-grown killer until Part 2. He returned in eight more sequels, the Nightmare on Elm Street crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and the 2009 remake Friday the 13th,...

Every Friday the 13th Movie, Ranked
Image
Have you ever found yourself on a dark and stormy night, debating the merits of Jason Voorhees’ machete mastery over a campfire? Every horror fan has their Friday the 13th favorites, and well, so do we. So we’ve ranked ’em!

Born from the golden age of slashers, the Friday the 13th franchise has given us over three decades of summer camp scares, vengeful Voorhees vendettas, and, let’s face it, some questionable fashion choices. It’s a franchise that’s seen Jason go from a mere campfire legend to an unstoppable force of nature, taking on everyone from telekinetic teens to, well, space marines. And while some entries might have you saying, “They camped it up too much,” others will have you locking your doors and avoiding lakes for the foreseeable future.

But before we dive into the murky waters of Crystal Lake, let’s get one thing straight:...

‘Friday the 13th Part 6’s Alternate Ending Would’ve Ruined the Franchise
Image
Over 43 years, there have been a whopping 12 Friday the 13th films. There would've been a lot more if it wasn't for that pesky lawsuit, which has resulted in no new entries since 2009 — but slasher fans are thankful for what we do have. While not every film in the franchise is a good one, Jason's biggest aficionados keep coming back to two as being the very best: 1984's Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and 1986's Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives. The latter could've been a joke, after the disaster that was Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and its copycat killer, and the bold decision to have Jason as a zombie in a meta film which winked at what came before.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning Is One of the Series’ Best Entries
Image
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is actually an underrated entry in the series. The movie finally gave the series interesting characters and felt like a cut above its predecessors. It was essentially a good version of other controversial slasher movies while arguably prophesying Scream.

The Friday the 13th series is one of the most well-known horror movie franchises, with many considering it part of the slasher genre's "trinity" alongside Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Despite this renown, the series isn't exactly known for particularly well-received movies. Ironically, one of its more contentious entries was actually a great example of the franchise's potential.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning was the fifth movie in the series, though its villain wasn't exactly Jason Voorhees. This sullied the movie in the eyes of fans, but the film actually raised the bar in terms of overall grade. It and its follow-up...

Blumhouse Wants to Revive Another Horror Franchise After Halloween and The Exorcist
Image
Blumhouse has successfully revived horror franchises like Halloween and The Exorcist, and they are now planning to bring back Friday the 13th. The upcoming film, The Exorcist: Believer, is a sequel to the 1973 horror classic and aims to start a new franchise within the same universe. Blumhouse executive Ryan Turek expressed their love for the Friday the 13th franchise and their desire to go back to its basics, including summer camp, campers, and Jason Voorhees in a mask.

Blumhouse has already become an expert in bringing back horror genre franchises. After reviving Halloween and The Exorcist with David Gordon Green helming both projects, the company is already thinking about the next bloody saga that they can bring back to the big screen.

In 2018, Blumhouse achieved the unexpected, telling a new story within the Halloween universe that connected directly to the original film, with Jamie Lee Curtis making her triumphant return to the saga.

Silver Scream Con 2023 Event Report – Sometimes the Sequel Is Even Better Than the Original
Image
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Silver Scream Con returned to the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 8-10 — ’cause let’s face it, baby, these days you gotta have a sequel!

Created by horror-inspired metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, Silver Scream Con has quickly established itself as a top-tier horror convention among celebrity guests and attendees alike. “Everybody’s been really nice, and I’m enjoying myself immensely,” said Tommy Lee Wallace, who created Michael Myers’ iconic mask for the original Halloween before going on to direct Halloween III: Season of the Witch. “I hope everyone gets the shit scared out of them!”

Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

10 Ways Jason Lives Saved The Friday The 13th Franchise
Image
Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives saved the franchise from being killed off by the studio once again during a difficult period in its history. The movie redeemed the series after the poorly received Friday the 13th Part 5, which was seen as a decline in the franchise. The film introduced metahumor to the series, using knowing humor and gags to make it feel fresh and revitalized.

Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives helped save the franchise during a difficult period in its history. The '80s gave rise to a slasher boom that spawned the likes of Jason Voorhees, Pinhead, Freddy Krueger and many more. Jason himself became something of a poster boy for slashers at the time, thanks to his trademark hockey mask and talent for violence, but the truth is, Paramount was always embarrassed by the success of the Friday the 13th movies. The movies...

Friday the 13th (2009) Nailed Jason Voorhees' Most Important Story
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise may hold the record for being the slasher franchise to introduce the most iconic horror tropes. While the franchise didn't manage to secure the final girl trope, it did solidify the trend of masked killers killing promiscuous teens and the idea of supernatural killers. But Jason Voorhees' story was a struggle to explore as it was often the subject of many changes and retcons that eventually pushed him into strange territories.

Jason's origin story may be the least majestic, especially when the likes of Freddy Krueger and Chucky had their origins told in a prologue or monologue. But from the outside looking in, the best aspects would've made for a more definitive and equally scary story. This was proven in the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th, which took what worked about the original trilogy and created a definitive origin. The best part was, by slightly tweaking the origin,...
