Definitely missed a lot of what this film was going for, which is definitely partly on me. A fair bit lost in translation, and it sounds like it would be helpful to be familiar with Ozu as well. Watching this dead tired at 11pm on a Sunday night likely didn't help comprehension. Was a big fan of the cinematography, especially the couple that keeps walking by. Excellent score for this film as well.

This is the first film of director Masayuki Suo. This blue movie is a parody of famous "Tokyo Monogatari (Tokyo Story)"(directed by Ozu). In the film, Suo imitate the situation of story, camera work, emotional descriptions of it. This is highly evaluated not only in Japenese filmmakers but also in Asian filmmakers, as is cited in Tung-Shing Yee 's " Se qing nan nu (Viva Erotica)".

Not to everyone's taste, I'm sure, but I really enjoyed this.

I understand that it is somewhat of a spoof, but in my view it's really well done and played very straight, with some genuinely erotic and touching moments, and good acting and cinematography throughout.

For me, the only jarring note was the relative attractiveness of the wife and the dominatrix lover. Given that he had such a beautiful and willing partner at home, his need to go elsewhere seemed unconvincing. This is a minor gripe, however.

Everything is related (that's a pun BTW!) to the members of a family including the widowed father that thinks every woman looks like his dead wife, his son and his very attractive newlywed wife, adult daughter and another younger son. The story begins with the father, daughter and younger son at the table listening to the noises above made by the older son and his new wife who are enjoying their honeymoon. The story continues with following the other members of the family and the relationship between everyone.

This is known as a parody of some of the films made by famed Director Yasujiro Ozu (who made Tokyo Story, one of the greatest films) although in bits. This also is a Pink Eiga film so there is several nudity and sex scenes which are integral to the story and characters. There is also bondage, candle play, whipping, watersports although nothing too explicit of course.

This movie has a few real laughs but mostly plays as a serious story with real characters that we get to chuckle at. It doesn't get too deep yet I felt empathy for the family. It's a real easy watch. The acting was very good. A very smart script that didn't take anything too far. Highly recommended.
