The original slate for James Gunn's Dcu was released to the public in a video in January 2023. In that video, Gunn himself gave a very minimal synopsis on each of the announced projects, which told of a very expansive list of various movies and TV shows of varying genres and characters. However, a little over a month ago, Gunn and Peter Safran gave an update on the future state of the Dcu, with little or no news on most of the projects announced in that initial video update.

So what's the deal? Is Gunn's Dcu in trouble before it even begins? Let's find out!

1. What projects were in the original Dcu slate?

DC Studios now has an official release date set in stone for the Dcu's first live-action show coming to Max.

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are set to bring the true theatrical introduction to the new Dcu this year with the release of Superman in July. This will be the first in a new and expansive slate of DC movies, which will then lead to Supergirl, The Authority, Swamp Thing, and more.

On top of the movie side of things, DC also has plans to bring plenty of new streaming content, adding a new layer of storytelling not previously seen in the old Dceu.

As Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk, Vincent D'Onofrio seems to have checked off all the comic book movie dreams anyone could have. It seems though that he still has his eye on one upcoming Dcu movie role that he would seemingly love to add to his superhero resume. Responding to a question on X/Twitter, the actor, who is set to return as Kingpin in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, really wants to play Swamp Thing, and this isn’t the first time he’s pitched the idea.

Vincent D'Onoforio is best known for his role as Kingpin within Marvel television. He's been the antithesis to Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in the Netflix series Daredevil and the Disney+ original series Daredevil: Born Again. D'Onofrio has also appeared as Kingpin in The Punisher, Hawkeye, and Echo. His acting as the Kingpin and the physical presence as well as the emotional depth he brings to the character has been praised by both fans and critics.

Today on X, Vincent D’Onoforio was asked if there was a character other than Wilson Fisk that he would like to play. He very simply replied “Swamp thing”.

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time D’Onoforio said he wants to play Swamp Thing. Back in 2024, he actually said, "These days, I don't know why...I don't if you guys are into DC like I am.

One of the most surprising yet fascinating revelations from Dcu’s initial announcement was Swamp Thing, which is set to be helmed by James Mangold, the mind behind the best X-Men movie to date.

Vincent D'Onofrio has reaffirmed his desire to join the DC Universe as a specific horror-tinged character. The Daredevil: Born Again star, who plays fan-favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe villain Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, recently shared that Swamp Thing would be the other character he'd like to play on the big or small screen.

Responding to a fan on X, D'Onofrio wrote that "Swamp Thing" would be the other character besides Wilson Fisk that he would want to play. At London's Star Wars Celebration in 2023, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars movies. One promised to explore the origin of the first Jedi, another looked set to assembled characters from the "Mandoverse," and then there was Daisy Ridley's return as Rey Skywalker.

They've yet to materialise, though The Mandalorian and Grogu is on the way and the rest remain in various stages of pre-production. However, Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has pointed to the future of the franchise being primarily post-The Rise of Skywalker.

Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), the veteran producer said Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg's planned trilogy is "rolling fast and furiously" and "has gone exceptionally well."

She added, "He’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June. We’re really excited about where that’s headed. This is the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future.

A collection of new animated series has been greenlit for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios. The projects, announced at an industry briefing on Feb. 21, aim to bolster the Dcu brand with programming for "younger-skewing" audiences.

Per Variety, the updated animated lineup kicks off with My Adventures with Green Lantern, centering on high schooler Jessica Cruz, after she inherits a power ring. There has been a lot of news from DC Studios in the past several days. Some of it has been great, some of it has been less than great, and some of it is somewhere in the No Man’s Land of interpretation and opinion that lies between the two. DC Studios has confirmed that a Sgt. Rock movie is in the works for the DC Universe. The confirmation came after studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran were asked about Daniel Craig's departure from the World War II movie.

Per Variety, Gunn and Safran recently held a press event for DC Studios' upcoming film and television slate. When the topic of Craig exiting Sgt. Rock came up; Safran clarified that the James Bond actor "was never attached" to the movie, so he couldn't have dropped out. The DC head went on to explain that the actor had merely been floated as a possible candidate for the role due to having just appeared in Sgt. Rock director Luca Guadagnino's previous film, Queer. "But, you know, we never met with Daniel. He was just an idea," Safran said, with Gunn adding, "Well, we never really even announced Sgt. Rock.

James Gunn and Zack Snyder have both helmed superhero movies that have gathered many fans. Although in real life the two filmmakers are friends, the internet has often believed the two are enemies and is constantly pitting them against each other.

Snyder helmed several entries in the DC Extended Universe, and Gunn is now rebooting the entire universe without using the former's work as canon. Both have dedicated fans ready to defend their favorites, although there is no real feud between the two auteurs. After posing together for a viral photo, Gunn revealed the reason why he decided to share the photo in a new interview with Variety.

It’s been just over two years since James Gunn and Peter Safran mapped out their initial slate of projects for DC Studios and what would be the newly revamped Dcu, a new interconnected universe of superhero movies and films based on DC characters and kicking off in earnest with Gunn’s “Superman” arriving this summer.

So where do they stand? In a press event last week on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn and Safran held court with journalists about all they had cooking, the stuff that’s moving forward and the stuff that has lost the wind in its sails or has hit a snag. That included everything from details on the studio’s Batman films — both the Dcu film “The Brave and the Bold” and updates on the non-canon “The Batman 2” from Matt Reeves — as well as a potential “Teen Titans” movie and the update...

At the end of January 2023, DC Studios gathered select members of the press and announced plans for a Dcu slate dubbed "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters." Many fans pointed out the similarities to Warner Bros.'s ill-fated 11-movie Dceu slate reveal in 2014 and, unfortunately, some of these Dcu projects aren't moving along as well as hoped.

Talking to press, co-ceo Peter Safran said of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker spin-off Waller, "We’ve taken a couple of cracks at it but still haven’t been able land. Waller has been a bumpy road."

The Authority, meanwhile, is "not the furthest along" according to James Gunn and, subsequently, "hasn't been made much [of] a priority." Safran explained, "It is a very big movie, if you’re going to do it properly. Some of the story elements perhaps that are in Superman and some of the other films we fast-tracked, step a little on the Authority.

Alan Moore is considered to be one of the best comic writers of all time, with most of his work being among some of the greatest comics to have ever been written. His most acclaimed work is easily the 12-issue series Watchmen, with artist Dave Gibbons, which has been adapted numerous times on film and television and is considered one of the greatest pieces of literature, not just comics.

That's all well and good, but what if I were to tell you that there's a portion of Watchmen that bears striking similarities to one of his earlier works in regard to his character of Doctor Manhattan? The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.

The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he's at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other's work. His essential grasp over the grimdark, dysfunctional reality of this world has allowed him to craft some of the most exceptional and exquisite pieces of literature.

However, as is the case with most works of genius, such novels and comics have either been deemed completely unadaptable, too dense and difficult to convert into live-action, or condensed and edited for the audience’s clarity. When it comes to the latter, the original source text is often disregarded and changed in certain parts to meet the film’s vision – which, in turn, defeats the purpose of the original story.

Wise first joined the cast of The Young and the Restless back in 2014. Introduced as a villainous cult leader, the character lasted on the soap until 2016. However, he recently made a return to the soap, with him teaming up with the villainous Jordan Howard.

Over time, and with a mighty push from Black Adam, the Dceu was officially dismantled in October 2022. As such, the Guillermo del Toro project fell through as well despite the master of horror devoting his career to bringing such characters as Swamp Thing and Etrigan the Demon to life.

Now, under the light of the new DC leadership, wandering minds cannot help but think of what greatness could be accomplished if only the suits and the execs had put studio politics aside to make one of the greatest movies happen.

The second episode of Harley Quinn season 5 showed us how Pamela Isley became Poison Ivy. Like most villain origins, it started with tragedy and the betrayal of a loved one. In Ivy’s case, it was by her professor and lover, Jason Woodrue. This comes into play after Lena Luthor, Lex’s sister, tells Ivy that they’ll work together.

James Gunn's Dcu is slowly being molded with a hot lineup of films. This includes Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. However, heroes aren't the only ones getting the spotlight, as there are going to be some noteworthy villain stories told in the near future. One of the more exciting features is Clayface from beloved genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan. The sinister tale is set to be unleashed on Gotham City in 2026. That being said, while Batman fans wait for the villain's theatrical live-action debut, Mondo has debuted their latest Batman: The Animated Series figure of Clayface.

DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has clarified the complex canonical status of his previous DC projects, establishing that only content starting with the animated series “Creature Commandos” will be considered “pure canon” in the new DC Universe (Dcu).

In a recent statement on Bluesky, Gunn addressed mounting questions about continuity in the Dcu, particularly regarding his earlier works “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker.” The filmmaker introduced a nuanced approach to canon, describing his 2021 film “The Suicide Squad” as an “imperfect memory” while noting that “Peacemaker” remains “almost entirely consistent” with the new universe’s canon, barring its Justice League connections.

“Short answer: Only Creature Commandos forward is pure canon,” Gunn explained. To illustrate this point, he referenced a specific plot element: “Rick Flag Jr was killed because we heard Rick Flag Sr talking about it in Creature Commandos, not because we saw it in The Suicide Squad.”

However, that doesn't mean upcoming DC projects will be relegated to one cinematic universe. Matt Reeves' epic crime saga, featuring The Batman, remains outside of the Dcu, despite speculation stating otherwise. And to curb any potential confusion from audiences, the co-head of DC Studios has confirmed that Elseworld spinoffs will have a distinct intro sequence.
