Swami Dada

Devanand was a great actor but unlike his brother Chetan and Vijay Anand, didn't possess the mercurial directorial abilities. Therefore, though he pursued his passion for direction even in the eighties and nineties, the films he made weren't anything to write of.

This film, having Dev Anand as the lead actor (he played the lead till his old days, some found it cringe; I view it from the point of view that he loved cinema and continued to follow it despite no critical acclaim), isn't anywhere close to the classics he acted in( read: films like Guide,Taxidriver, Johnny Mera Naam, Hum Dono, et al). In a way, it embodies that decade where mainstream Hindi cinema was hamstrung (and one way where it really sticks out is in the abominable quality of songs).

Dev Anand plays a holyman who entangles himself into a crime ring and vows to bring it down. There are actors of multiple calibres in here ranging from Naseerudin Shah in a minor role to a relatively young MIthun Chakravorthy. The film's runtime is quite padded (helped in no small part to the soundtrack of the film which is best skipped).

If someone is really a fan of Dev Anand and wishes to dive deep into his filmography, then probably this isn't the worst film to do so. But there are probably dozens of better films in which this legendary actor starred in.
