Director Václav Vorlícek wanted to avoid the usual cliche that the disgraced negative character in Sleeping Beauty is an ugly old hag and wished that the Queen's evil sister Melanie was as beautiful as the Queen herself, who was to be played by Milena Dvorská, so he cast Libuse Svormová in the part. To make the actress look even fresher as Melanie, the make-up artists lifted her skin above her cheekbones and covered everything with a wig.
