This movie had a strong asset ; four reliable actors:Françoise Fabian ("Belle De Jour" ,"Raphael Ou Le Débauché"),Caroline Cellier (Chabrol's "Que La Bête Meure" )Jean-Marc Bory ("Les Amants " by louis Malle ) and Gilles Segal (TV miniseries "Les Rosenberg Ne Doivent Pas Mourir".)
Although Françoise Sagan wrote many novels (many of which were transferred to the screen:only Preminger's "Bonjour Tristesse" is memorable ) ,it was the first time she had directed a film,the screenplay of which was based on one of her short stories;it was one of the biggest flops of the year and she called it a day as a director.
A bourgeois couple,Jérôme and Monika ,along with the husband's best friend and his escort girl ,Stanislas and Betty ,spends a weekend in the mountains in a hunting lodge .Stanislas thinks that Jérôme does not deserve Monika and he intends to take advantage of this two-day break to sleep with her.Betty ,whose companion despises and humiliates her,consoles herself with Antoine ,the warden of the chalet ,a simple-minded young man ....Stanislas and Jérôme go hunting in the mountains while Monika is reading,and Betty shopping in Chamonix.
I must confess that ,as a novelist ,Sagan is not my cup of tea ;as for the film,,it's psychological drama wrapped in Cellophane ;bourgeoisie is treated with indulgence ,unlike in Bunuel's or Chabrol's works .However ,there was something interesting in the Betty/Antoine relationship :both are exploited by the wealthy class ;she's an escort girl, her companion pays her to 'sit there and look pretty" ;he's a big kid,and for his employers ,just a piece of furniture they patronize ("it's pouring with rain,Antoine ,you're going to catch cold" );but Sagan lets them have sex and that's it ;she's more interested in her bourgeois ;if you can relate to this kind of characters ,much good may it do to you.
Do pick up the movies I mention above ,if you want to see these talented actors and actresses in a favorable light.
