The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Serpico
Image
Over 50 years ago, Sidney Lumet released "Serpico," a powerful indictment of NYPD police corruption that was based on a true story. Decades later, New York's "boys in blue" are still being consistently called out for corruption, but at the time of the film's release in 1973, "Serpico" felt like it might just cause a sea change in the way America — or at least Hollywood — saw its law enforcement systems. "Sidney Lumet's 'Serpico,' the first in what threatens to be an avalanche of movies about policemen, picks up the old cop film and brings it with lights flashing and sirens blaring into the middle of the Watergate era," Vincent Canby wrote in his original review for the New York Times.

"Serpico" may not have ended up changing the world, but the movie based on the book of the same name by Peter Maas was a box office and critical hit,...

Film Review: Lost in the Stars (2022) by Cui Rui and Liu Xiang
Sean Connery and Cornelia Sharpe in Meurtre pour un homme seul (1976)
Adapted from Alexey Korenev's 1990 Soviet comedy film “A Trap for Lonely Man” and French playwright Robert Thomas' 1960 play “Trap for a Lonely Man” (Piege Pour un Homme Seul), “Lost in the Stars” is a truly delirious title which implements a story filled with twists in a visually impressive package. The film premiered at the Hainan International Film Festival on 25 December 2022 and released theatrically in China on 22 June 2023 to commercial success, amassing more than $485 million internationally.

He Fei and his wife Li Muzi are celebrating the first anniversary of their marriage at an island resort in Barlandia, a fictional Southeast Asian country that appears to have Malay and Thai as their official languages. However, at some point, Li Muzi disappears, and this is where the movie actually begins, with He Fei in the local police precinct trying to convince...

Jerry Lawler
Opinionated: What are the best pro-wrestling podcasts out there?
Jerry Lawler
So, I’m a wrestling fan, have been for going-on three decades, and so when I’m not watching pro-wrestling on television or on PPV, or when I’m not looking back on old shows, or when I’m not collecting wrestling figures, or when I’m not watching documentaries about the wrestling business, I’m likely listening to a pro-wrestling podcast. Oh, and there’s a whole lot of those. The podcast world is drenched with high-quality wrestling podcasts, and because of this fact I can’t listen to them all, but I do my best to listen to a good selection of them, and so I thought I’d recommend a few here, a few that I personally consider the best wrestling podcasts out there today.

Grilling Jr.

Now, if you’re a wrestling fan, then you will know who Jim Ross is. The voice of many years...

Watch This Epic Throwback Video of Amy Poehler Rapping in the '90s!
It's throwback Thursday and Amy P. is in the house! That's right, Amy Poehler is actually a rapper in disguise. Well, at least she is in this '90s clip anyway! Footage from a 1995 pilot titled Rtvn showcases a young Poehler who can put together a rhyme, proving that she has always been the coolest—even way back in the day! Talk about a throwback. "The next man or the next wo-man it doesn't make a difference. Keep the competition coming. I recite chapter and verse. The title of this recital is 'Ladies First'," rapped the comedienne. The pilot, featuring Second City Improv legend Del Close and Matt Dwyer, was filmed before Poehler's big Saturday Night Live...

Revisiting Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade
Feature Simon Brew 30 Jan 2014 - 06:53

The lightest, funniest Indiana Jones movie generally ranks second, behind Raiders of the Lost Ark. Simon takes a look back...

This article contains spoilers for Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade and The Untouchables.

Go by the general law of Indiana Jones movies, and Raiders Of The Lost Ark is regarded as the best, Last Crusade is second, then there's a gap to Temple Of Doom in third, and the other one is fourth. I looked at Temple Of Doom earlier in the week, here, after I watched the movie with my ten-year old son. After that, we popped The Last Crusade on. And it left me wondering: is Last Crusade's stranglehold on second place fair?

Certainly by the time my ten-year old sat through it he'd have said so. He guffawed, was excited, and enjoyed the hell out of it. I don't blame him,...

Richard C. Sarafian, Director Of "Vanishing Point", Dead At Age 83
By Lee Pfeiffer

Cinema Retro mourns the passing of director Richard C. Sarafian, who has passed away at age 83. Sarafian may not be a household name but in the film industry he was held in great regard, especially by maverick younger directors like Quentin Tarantino who emulated his work and style. Crusty, outspoken and often littering his sentences with curses that would make a longshoreman blush, Sarafian was an uncompromising man when it came to his personal visions of how his movies should be constructed. He started off directing episodes of classic TV series including I Spy and Batman and his best known work from the 1960s is the eerie "Living Doll" episode of The Twilight Zone in which Telly Savalas as a cruel stepfather gets his comeuppance at the hands of possessed toy doll. Sarafian graduated into feature films and directed the movie which gained him fame, if not fortune: Vanishing Point,...

She sang the National Anthem at the Presidential Inauguration. She shot the lights out performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Now she has a documentary. Beyonce bared her life, her soul, and her overall amazing-ness for all to see in ‘Life Is But A Dream!’

Considering how big Jay-z and Beyonce are, there is not a more subdued, more private celebrity couple around. Remember how long it took for them to admit that they were dating!? That’s why Beyonce’s self-directed HBO documentary, Life Is But a Dream, is such a huge deal — it’s our first real all-access pass into the life of Beyonce Knowles.

Beyonce Opens Up About Her Dad

The movie begins very fittingly, with Queen B finally fully stepping out on her own.

Two years ago, Beyonce went through the hardest fight in her life — she decided to fire her father, Mathew Knowles, as her manager.

British Invasion: 15 Hot Young Actors From Across the Pond
As of next year, three of America's most famous superheroes will be played by Brits: Superman (Henry Cavill), Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield), and Batman (Christian Bale). No, we're not going to protest out of some misguided jingoism (although we will point out the horror with which our friends across the Atlantic responded to Renee Zellweger playing Bridget Jones once upon a time).

We don't know if it's the popularity of rigorous youth drama programs or what, but the British are invading Hollywood at a rate that rivals the arrival of the Aussies in the late '90s. Looking at the more established young slate of English talent (Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, the Harry Potter trifecta, and Robert Pattinson to name a few), we say welcome to the next gen of Bright Young Brits.

Alex Pettyfer

Move over Robert Pattinson, Pettyfer is the new Prince of Young Adult adaptations. Fresh off his...
