How ‘Nyad’ & ‘Dumb Money’ Producer Teddy Schwarzman Built Black Bear Into An Indie Studio To Be Reckoned With – The Deadline Interview
Image
Exclusive: It’s no secret that the independent film game is not for the faint-hearted, with the last decade seeing a number of companies and financiers collapse under the weight of the industry’s constant state of flux. But amidst the turmoil and unprecedented change, Teddy Schwarzman has been quietly building his Black Bear label into a full-fledged independent film studio.

The company, which Schwarzman founded as a financing and production outfit back in 2011, has now grown into a business that has tentacles in international sales; theatrical distribution in Canada (Elevation Pictures) and, more recently, the UK (Black Bear UK); a management business; a documentary financing joint venture with New Regency dubbed Double Agent; and a television strand, the latter of which recently deficit-financed AMC’s crime drama Monsieur Spade starring Clive Owen.

When Deadline sits down with Schwarzman in his Santa Monica office for a rare interview, Black Bear...

Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Harvey Weinstein Is Done: After 30 Years of Abusive Behavior, the Mogul Lies in the Bed He Made
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
How are the mighty fallen. I first met Harvey Weinstein at Cannes in 1986, where he had a tiny room at the Majestic Hotel and ran around the festival looking for movies for Miramax Films to acquire. The former Buffalo concert promoter was an anxious and eager hustler. He eventually picked up Lizzie Borden’s realistic look at New York hookers, “Working Girls,” out of Director’s Fortnight and took it to Sundance, where it won a 1987 jury prize. Even back then, as Peter Biskind reported in “Down and Dirty Pictures,” while the Weinsteins did a good job releasing the movie ($1.7 million domestic), the producers audited Miramax’s books and found some inappropriate expenses that the Weinsteins were forced to reimburse.

Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart to Host 'Saturday Night Live' For The First Time in February
Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart is ready to show a much less serious side of herself.

The 26-year-old actress is hosting Saturday Night Live on February 4, the NBC show announced during Aziz Ansari's hosting gig this weekend. Stewart, who has never hosted SNL before, will be joined by musical guest Alessia Cara.

In November, the Equals actress admitted that her Twilight years was an "uncomfortable" time for her in the spotlight, so the news of her hosting gig may come as a surprise.

"I was 17, 18, when it all went down and that was the most uncomfortable, terrible, weird thing -- you're, like, 17 years old, 'Ahhh!'" she told Ellen DeGeneres. "At the same time it's good. It kind of forced me to stand to attention in this way, which, I didn't have that."

These days, Stewart is definitely more comfortable discussing her personal life. On Friday...

New ‘Jason Bourne’ Clips Play Up Big Action Sequences, Broken Bones — Watch
Matt Damon
Critics and audiences haven’t been especially kind to “Independence Day: Resurgence,” but we still have another revived action franchise to put our hopes in. “Jason Bourne” hits theaters at the end of the month, and if the latest installment in the spy franchise lives up to its predecessors it could be a highlight of a lagging summer. Three new clips have been released from Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass’ latest collaboration (below).

None of these new glimpses will be unfamiliar to anyone who’s seen the prior three Bourne movies — “Identity,” “Supremacy” and “Ultimatum” — but they do appear appropriately kinetic. Damon chases through Vegas in a car in one and steals a motorcycle during the middle of a protest in another; as always, his exploits are interspersed with exasperated agents in their clandestine headquarters being reminded that,...

Matt Damon Enlists Strangers as Spies in ‘Jason Bourne’ Prank Video
Matt Damon
A few unsuspecting people got an unexpected surprise when a stranger handed them a phone with someone on the other end, giving them directions for a mission. The person on the other end? Matt Damon. In a video partnering with Omaze in support of water.org, Damon decided to prank strangers, enlisting them as spies to pick up a package and deliver it.

The video is absolutely hilarious, filled with suspicion, awkwardness, hot dogs, swimming elephants and more. One young man was so confused, saying things like, “This better not be f***ing illegal,” and, “Please god, don’t let this be no set up.” Luckily, the man they were delivering it to was Damon himself — and they all won tickets to the premiere of “Jason Bourne” this summer.

Looking for good books about the movies to read? We've got a bumper selection of recommendations right here...

A confession. I actually started writing this article in 2013, and the reason you've only reading it now is that I've made sure I've read every book on this list, save for one or two where I've marked otherwise. As such, what you're getting is a very personal list of recommendations. Each of these books has at least something to it that I think is of interest to someone wanting to learn more about film - or just enjoy stories of movie making.

I've tended to avoid picture books, with one exception, as these ones I've chosen are all intended to be chock-full of words, to relax with at the end of a long day. Which is what I did. There are one or two notable omissions, as I'm still...
