45 years and still no match for this Jewel.

This is one of those rare suspense thrillers from the Indian Film industry ( also for some reasons referred to as Bollywood)which keeps you Guessing, engrossed , immersed and entertained right till the very end (Until the not-so fat lady sings). This film was way ahead of its time , it was from an era in which people actually spent time and effort on actually writing a good script. Vijay Anand (who also directed "teesri manzil" ) once again showed that he is the master of suspense . He is also ,in my opinion, one of the BEST at filming Song sequences, be it the sensuous "raat akeli hai" or the elaborate " hoton mein aisi baat" . This movie was on par (if not better) than many of the suspense thrillers which came out of Hollywood in that era.I really hope the Indian Film Industry finds more directors like Vijay Anand, who Value the importance of a good script.

    OUTSTANDING FILM

One of the best Hindi movies ever made and that too by India's best director Vijay Anand.Everything about this movie was brilliant. 9/10

JEWEL THIEF is a gem of Indian cinema

JEWEL THIEF is a heist thriller about Amar, a notorious burglar and Vinay, a jewel expert who also happens to be the son of the Police Commissioner. Also, Amar and Vinay are physically identical other than the thief having an extra finger on his right leg. Vinay goes undercover in search of this burglar and soon gets entangled in a deadly conspiracy where nothing is what it seems.

Strictly from a narrative point of view, this film is just masterful with great writing, thrilling and twisty storytelling, a great musical album, wonderful production design, and some brilliant performances. The colourful and visually dazzling dance numbers and gorgeous cinematography makes this film look splendid even after all those years, and the stylish direction of Vijay Anand gives this film an enchanting energy. The runtime does touch the 3-hour mark but it never feels boring because of its brisk pace and intriguing screenplay, which doesn't rely on cliches and has no unnecessary sequences. The one thing that's also worth noting is how beautifully staged the scenes are. This is basically a film which Hitchcock would have made if he was a Bollywood director.

    A stone-cold masterpiece!

One of the best Thrillers made in India

Unlike Bond and other detective movies, Alfred Hitchcock's hero used to be a common man who would get into trouble and then with his acumen and courage (and luck) would get out of it. Jewel Thief is based on the same principle and so in a way it is Vijay Anand's tribute to the master of suspense. The tribute as it may be but it stands its own grounds and establishes Vijay Anand as a great director himself.

It is the story of a common man Vinay who one day realizes that he has a double called Amar who in fact is a Jewel Thief. Suddenly Vinay finds himself in the middle of a hatching scheme and to save himself goes on a wild goose chase to find this Amar who remains one step ahead of him. The suspense is almost killing throughout the movie and as the plot unravels you are hit by the brilliance of the scheme. Just like Hitchcock's movies, Jewel Thief can boast of a grand climax shot inside the grand palace of Sikkim.

Everyone and I mean everyone; Dev Anand, Vijay Anand, Ashok Kumar, Vajyanti Mala, Tanuja, SD Burman, Kishore Kumar, Majrooh Sultanpuri etc. etc. are in their top forms. This is one of the best thrillers ever made in India.

Getting Dev Anand for Jewel Thief wasn't a problem. But getting Ashok Kumar, the only one who Goldie was convinced could carry off the role of the suave villain, was difficult. Dadamoni had just returned from a heart surgery and when Goldie trekked to Roop Tara studio with the intention of getting his okay, he knew he had a task on his hands. Dev Anand introduced him to Dadamoni saying, "Goldie wants to make a film with you." After that the younger Anand took over, telling Dadamoni that he was making a two hero project. "I want you to play the title role. It's a very challenging role. The only problem is that we learn in the last reel that your character is the film's bad man. But you've played the anti-hero before. You can do it. In fact, only you can do it. You're a courageous actor, yes, you are," Goldie coaxed the veteran actor. Ashok Kumar was game. But he laid down three conditions. "I'm not going to hit anyone. And no one should hit me. If I get into fisticuffs it'll kill me," he warned Goldie. Goldie assured him that there would be no fights. His villain was an intellectual villain. He uses his mind, not his muscles. Dadamoni was relieved to hear that. His final condition was that he would report on the sets at 11 a.m. sharp with make-up on. Two hours later they'd break for an hour-long lunch break. And at 5 p.m. it would be "pack-up". That too was agreeable to Goldie. He assured Dadamoni that his schedule would be followed to the minute. On the first day Dev Anand and Ashok Kumar were on the sets at 11 a.m. sharp. But there was no sign of the film's heroine, Vyjayantimala. An assistant was sent to her every quarter of an hour. Finally, at 12.30 he returned with the message that madam didn't want to be disturbed, she'd come when she was ready. At ten minutes to one she strolled in asking sweetly, "Am I late?" Goldie surprised her by calling for a lunch break. Vyjayantimala was furious. "Your assistant has been badgering me for the last two hours and now when I'm here you announce a break," she raged. Goldie was unfazed. "Our most senior artiste is not a very healthy person. We have to follow his schedule. You have to be on the set early," he reminded her. Vyjayantimala never forgot the "slight". For the rest of the film, Goldie insists, she nursed a khunnas against him. There were some date problems and many distractions but Vyjayantimala being the professional that she was, still came up with a polished performance. Goldie's only grievance is that she could have done better with Hoton pe aisi baat. "I wanted her to rehearse the number before we went for a final take. But she told me airily that she didn't need any rehearsals. I insisted she did, but she still didn't report for rehearsals and came straight to the set. I called for "pack-up" and told her firmly that she had to stay back in the studio and practise with the assistants. She did practise, for 15 minutes. Then she got into her car and drove off saying that Saroj Khan would be coming to her place later and they'd go over the steps together. The rehearsal never happened but Vyjayantimala being a good actress and an excellent dancer didn't find it too difficult to pick up the steps and the shots were okayed quickly. But I could never establish the kind of rapport I had with Mumtaz, Waheeda, Hema and Raakhee, with Vyjayantimala," Goldie rues

It is 8:30 p.m. when Vinay is with Shalu waiting to go to his night shift at the jewelers. After the goons snatch the ring from Shalu, Vinay goes to his father, the police commissioner to report the incident. At that point, it is clearly day time. Then it switches back to night time when he goes to the jewelry shop.
