Alf Clausen, the veteran composer with two Emmy wins and 30 nominations whose whimsical scores brightened such television series as The Simpsons, Moonlighting and, purely coincidentally, Alf, has died. He was 84.
Clausen died Thursday at his Valley Village home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Kaarin Clausen, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy about eight years ago, she said.
From The Simpsons‘ second season in 1990 until its 28th in 2017, Clausen crafted many of the spirited melodies that contributed to the cutting-edge lunacy of the Fox animated show. From 23 Emmy nominations, he — along with lyricist Ken Keeler — won in 1997 and ’98 for the songs “We Put the Spring in Springfield” and “You’re Checkin’ In (A Musical Tribute to the Betty Ford Center).”
His harmonious relationship with the show would not last, however, with Clausen filing a lawsuit against Disney and Fox in August 2019 after he was dismissed from The Simpsons.

10 Things I Hate About You, the 1999 teen comedy that defined an entire generation, is set to get a sequel. Gil Junger, who also directed the first film, is behind 10 Things I Hate About Dating, a project which he describes as having a similar vibe without being a direct sequel to the first entry. Junger says it is "a love story for people who've deleted the apps and re-downloaded them."
In 1999, teenagers didn't have any real idea what an app was or how relevant they would become to modern life. Instead, the original movie, inspired by Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, was a fresh and clever rendering of analog high school culture featuring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, among others. However, don't expect legacy characters to make an appearance in the sequel.

Director Gil Junger has been chatting about the direction of 10 Things I Hate About Dating, which won’t be a romcom this time…
After many years and one part-shot movie that never got released, director Gil Junger is finally working on a fresh follow-up to his delightful 1999 romcom, 10 Things I Hate About You.
The original starred Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew. And as we’ve explored in the video that should pop up here, filming began on a sequel just over a decade ago. Filming, however, never finished…
In the last few weeks though, Gil Junger has revealed that he has a trilogy of follow-ups now in the works. 10 Things I Hate About Dating will be first, with the plan being to follow those with 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

After making his feature scripting debut with 1992's "The Cutting Edge," an agreeable figure skating riff on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" starring D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly, Tony Gilroy quickly established himself as a Hollywood screenwriter to watch. Though he received only scattered praise for delivering a hugely engrossing adaptation of Stephen King's "Dolores Claiborne" and penning the niftily plotted medical thriller "Extreme Measures," his major rewrite of "The Devil's Advocate," which transformed a difficult-to-pin-down project into a shamelessly entertaining box office hit, placed him on the town's A-list.
While Gilroy didn't have a singular voice like his top-paid peers Shane Black, Joe Eszterhas, and Daniel Waters, he was highly valued by filmmakers for his wit, sense of storytelling structure, and lack of preciousness. He wasn't above tinkering on Michael Bay's silly "Armageddon" or Antoine Fuqua's action-comedy "Bait," which was likely because a) the money...

Julia Stiles has been on our screens for almost three decades. After studying theatre in New York as a child, Stiles was cast as a disturbed teenager in the 1998 Michael Steinberg thriller Wicked. This led to her break-out role as the antisocial older sister of Larisa Oleynik and potential girlfriend of bad boy Heath Ledger in the 1999 Shakespeare-influenced 10 Things I Hate About You (based on The Taming of the Shrew). On screen, she then dated Freddie Prinze Jr in Down to You, and swapped ballet for hip-hop with Sean Patrick Thomas in Save the Last Dance.
As Stiles grew up, so did her characters. She played a young assistant to Betty Rizzo from Grease (Stockard Channing) in The Business of Strangers.

"How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways?" That's the tagline featured on many of the posters for the 1999 teen classic,10 Things I Hate About You. Based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," the film was a fun balance of the playwright's sensibilities and the teen movie boom that exploded during the late 90s. It's one of the best-received films of its kind from that era and is still beloved today, which could be why the film's director, Gil Junger, is confident that a sequel will be successful. In fact, he has ideas that will go beyond making just one follow-up.

The 1999 high school comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You, helped usher in Heath Ledger as a new breakout star on American shores. The movie was a modern day retelling of the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew and featured an ensemble cast that also included Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan, Allison Janney and Larry Miller. The teen romance film would also become a hit as it opened second at the box office (having gone up against The Matrix) and grossed over $50 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It would also spawn a TV show adaptation on ABC Family in 2009. Deadline is reporting that the director of the original film, Gil Junger, is now planning to make a sequel trilogy to the 1999 comedy.
The sequel trilogy will also have a nod to the late star, Heath Ledger, who played the school’s rebellious student, Patrick Verona.

10 Things I Hate About You director Gil Junger has revealed that an entirely new trilogy of follow-ups is in development.
According to a new report, we could be in line to get a whole slew of projects following up on the classic 1999 rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You.
Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play The Taming Of The Shrew about a warring would-be couple, the 1999 film starred Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. It retooled the play’s basic set-up into a classic American high school formula, with the teenage protagonists running afoul of each other at house parties, the football field and more, cleverly folding Shakespeare’s set-ups into genre conventions that we all know and love.
Gil Junger, the original film’s director, has revealed to People that over a quarter of a century later, the concept is being reimagined once more, with a trilogy being planned this time.

Gil Junger, the director of 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), is planning a sequel trilogy with a nod to Heath Ledger.
The teen romantic comedy in which Ledger starred alongside Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik became a cult classic, and Junger wants to revisit its universe.
In a new interview, the filmmaker revealed he is co-writing a script alongside Naya Elle James that they have titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating. The film would be the first of three with subsequent installments titled 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.
Although the film has not been greenlit, Junger tells People the sequel “is definitely in the works as a feature film. We’re developing it right now.”
10 Things I Hate About You is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Junger says Molière’s The Misanthrope would inspire his follow-up film.

Timothy Dalton said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he turned down an original offer to play James Bond in his mid-20s because he didn’t think the character should be that young. In 2015, all that would change.
Domingo was a guest on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, and he recalled being approached with the idea of starring in a TV show and his initial thoughts were, "I was a theater snob. I was like, 'Absolutely not.'" The actor claims that it took a little...

With Valentine’s season finally here, the urge to watch rom-coms of the past and present is more prevalent than ever. Watching two people fall in love over the course of an hour and a half despite the wacky hijinks and shenanigans that get thrown their way offers a charming and romantic experience for audiences. Love stories have always been an important and beloved part of pop culture and media, but arguably no decade was better for the genre than the late 1990s and early 2000s.
From How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to 13 Going on 30 to The Wedding Planner, that era produced beloved classics that still get referenced and watched in 2025. One classic 1999 film was not only the strongest of that era, but continued to be cherished by rom-com fans all the way through the modern day. 10 Things I Hate About You became a genre-defining classic thanks to...

Nothing quite screams the late aughts and early 2010's like a comedy loosely related to a classic work of literature. There was She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes, which was based on the William Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. There was the absolute classic that was 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Styles and the late-great Heath Ledger, which was based on The Taming of the Shrew. In 2010, one comedy came about loosely related to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Now, Easy A starring Emma Stone, is coming to Hulu next month.

10 Things I Hate About You star Julia Stiles remembers working with the late actor Heath Ledger on the teen comedy that would change the lives of all the young performers who worked in the film. Decades after they played Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona, Stiles recalls the "energy and passion" of the performer who sadly passed away in 2008 after an accidental drug overdose.
As reported by CinemaBlend, Stiles appeared as a guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and spent some of her time reflecting on co-starring with Heath Ledger in the film. Stiles and Ledger played Kat and Verona, respectively, and the couple ultimately became one of the iconic duos in the '90s teen comedy sub-genre. Here's what Stiles had to say about working with the actor who eventually won the posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight...

It has been nearly 17 years since Oscar winner Heath Ledger’s death, and now his one-time co-star, Julia Stiles, is remembering the actor. Stiles starred with Ledger in 1999’s classic teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. Per People, Stiles, while promoting the film Wish You Were Here on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, touched on working with Ledger on the movie.
“He was such a force,” said Stiles, who co-wrote and makes her directorial debut with Wish You Were Here, which hits theaters Jan. 17. “He walked into a room and just lit it up and had so much energy and passion, and it’s really sad that he’s gone,” Stiles said.

When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

William Shakespeare's extensive body of work has been subject to countless adaptations. Whether it's a film clearly based on Shakespeare's story or one with more subtle connections, there are plenty out there to choose from. One of these is the 16th-century comedy The Taming of the Shrew, which was memorably retold in the beloved 1999 teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Despite the basic plot being the same, these two tales have some notable differences.
10 Things I Hate About You and its source material, The Taming of the Shrew, essentially follow two sisters and their potential love interests. The sisters are vastly different — the eldest is deemed a "shrew" or just generally difficult to be with, while the youngest is highly desirable. With the film being a modern version of the original play, there is plenty that diverges from Shakespeare's initial premise,...

When Amy Heckerling scored a teen comedy hit in 1995 with "Clueless" by working from the Jane Austen's 1816 novel "Emma," Hollywood figured there might be a potential goldmine in youth-skewing films based on classic works of fiction. Gil Junger certainly found this to be the case with "10 Things I Hate About You," his high school-set take on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," while Robert Iscove scored a box office hit with his "Pygmalion" riff "She's All That." So it wasn't all that shocking when Roger Kumble found intrigue and no shortage of sex appeal via "Cruel Intentions," his scheming rich kids reworking of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons dangereuses."
Why did the film work so well? Columbia Pictures' willingness to release the film with an R rating allowed Kumble to push much further with the sensuality. He also had an absolute juggernaut of a young cast in Sarah Michelle Gellar,...

Last year, Anyone But You had audiences excited about the great return of the rom-com genre. The film had promising star potential in Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. However, its stars are dimmed considerably by a story that halted any real character development. Anyone But You is adapted from William Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing. A hallmark of movies based on Shakespearean stories is their ability to find a strong central message amid a cacophony of intertwining narratives, and Anyone But You contorted its source material so much that all of its ensemble characters fall flat.
On the contrary, a very different contemporary Shakespeare adaptation did the Bard justice 25 years ago. 10 Things I Hate About You is adapted from Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, another comedy. John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."
The Ford movie could've been Wayne's Western swan song, but a rifle-toting Wayne astride a horse still held commercial appeal,...

Celebrity divorces last longer than celebrity marriages, and perhaps afford the public more sheer entertainment. Hearing about the clashing of egos, the mutual narcissism, the profligacy — it all makes us rather relieved to be living our littler, more anonymous lives.
“It’s easy to get into a marriage,” a Californian lawyer said, rubbing his hands with glee, “and very difficult to get out of one.” Love curdles into hatred, and soon enough it’s like the Wild West.

Remakes of classic films are often at the mercy of a particular form of critique; inevitably drawing comparisons, more often than not unfavorable, to the original. Shot-for-shot adaptations pose a particular set of bugbears for critics and audiences alike, but, arguably, the greater risk comes from "updating" a classic. Some alterations make sense: Refusing to drown Ariel in The Little Mermaid springs to mind as a good call for Disney. Bringing the story of The Taming of the Shrew to a 1990s American high school in 10 Things I Hate About You gave a centuries-old story a new perspective. Hans Christian Andersen and William Shakespeare have been ripe for the picking long before copyrights became an issue, and there is a certain leniency offered to a cinematic adaptation of another medium, even if the phrase "I preferred the book" is the go-to for those who have never even seen the movie.

Anyone but You cleverly adapts Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" with modern-day rom-com twists and comedic chaos. The film pays homage to classic rom-coms based on Shakespeare, like "10 Things I Hate About You" and "She's the Man." Through character names, quotes, and themes, Anyone but You effectively references Shakespeare's original work while putting its own spin on the story.
In their new romantic comedy, Anyone but You, actors Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are actually adapting one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies, "Much Ado About Nothing." Anyone but You is a rom-com that follows Bea and Ben, two people that form a somewhat meaningful connection that is quickly and accidentally broken. Later, Bea and Ben reunite when their mutual friends are getting married, and to meet their own ends, they decide to pretend that they are in a relationship. Comedic chaos ensues from there.

10 Things I Hate About You co-star David Krumholtz shares insights into the relationships with his castmates, calling friend Heath Ledger a "sweetheart." The classic romantic comedy is based on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. 10 Things I Hate About You celebrated its 25th anniversary on March 31.
25 years later and “I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” Kat’s (Julia Stiles) heart-wrenching and tear-soaked poem reading, which was written for Heath Ledger’s character Patrick, still resonates today as the romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You celebrates its Silver Anniversary. The 1999 teen drama 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger, is loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. In this romantic comedy, Patrick (Heath Ledger) is paid to date Kat (Julia Stiles) so that other boys from their school can date her younger sister, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). Just like in Shakespeare's classic, their father has declared that sweet, naïve Bianca cannot entertain suitors until her abrasive, stand-offish older sister Kat (Katherina in Shakespeare) does. Both stories begin with the same premise, but their overall message is different. The Taming of the Shrew is a questionable tale about a man who "out shrews" a woman he married for money and forces her into submission. Ten Things I Hate About You is a heartwarming film about two people who are largely misunderstood by the world coming to love and care for each other.

Anyone But You revives rom-coms with nods to Shakespeare, just like 10 Things I Hate About You did 25 years before. 10 Things I Hate About You modernizes Shakespeare's themes, giving Kat more agency and respect while removing misogynistic undertones. The clever screenplay of 10 Things I Hate About You stands out among teen comedies, becoming a timeless classic.
The recently released Anyone But You not only helped revive romantic comedies in the theatrical landscape, but it also looked to the work of William Shakespeare for inspiration in a way that used to make it clear that the 16th-century English playwright had his finger on the pulse of the human condition that would prove to be timeless. Much Ado About Nothing serves as the blueprint for the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-led rom-com, but it's not the first film of this nature to use one of Shakespeare's plays to spin...

“Over the course of his career, legendary mangaka Osamu Tezuka adapted many of Shakespeare's works. Shakespeare Manga Theater collects these adaptations into one volume. The book includes the following: The Merchant of Venice (1959), Robio and Robiette, Macbeth, Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew, and Othello. Shakespeare Manga Theater is sure to be popular not just with Tezuka fans, but also provide a fun and useful educational tool for schools interested in presenting Shakespeare in a format that is easier for readers to engage with.” (Ablaze)
Regarding theater, almost no author is more prolific than William Shakespeare. It can be said that when it comes to manga, Osamu Tezuka is also one of the most well-recognized artists ever to tackle the craft. “Shakespeare Manga Theater” by Osamu Tezuka combines the work of these two great artists to create an anthology of works that is both unique and memorable, if not a...
