- Thumbelina: Your size has nothing to do with your real happiness. As long as you're with the people you love and who love you, as long as you can accept yourself for what you really are... that's happiness.
- Chris: Why, oh why can't I reach the garden? Why? Why?
- The Sandman: Because you have deserted your friends. Lied and betrayed those who have loved you. All of this you have done to reach your goal, and yet you have not succeeded.
- Chris: But... I didn't mean to.
- The Sandman: We all say that, little master. "I didn't mean to! Forgive me! I didn't mean any harm!" But we continue to hurt those who trust us. Our own selfish ambitions force cruel acts upon us.

- The Sandman: Ah, my friend. Do not weep for Chris, for he was no better nor worse than many. And he did finally find his Garden of Paradise. Not in the way he dreamed, but through his wonderful and everlasting fairy stories; wonderful because they are filled through and through with the oddities and human errors of us all. I like to believe that in some small way, I helped him. Shall I try and do the same for you? Maybe tonight...
- The Little Mermaid: Father, sisters, look what I found. He came from the world above! Isn't he beautiful?
- Father Neptune: Yes, and so young. It's a pity to die when one is so young.
- The Little Mermaid: Die? What is die? Isn't he just asleep?
- Father Neptune: I'm sorry, my child, but the young boy from the world above has drowned. He will not sleep, or smile, or swim with you. He cannot. That is to be dead, my daughter.
- The Little Mermaid's sister: Dead? Forever dead.
- Father Neptune: However, my children, human beings have an immortal soul that lives forever. Which lives after the body has turned to dust. It rises up through limpid air, through the clouds up to the shining stars. Just as we rise out of the water see the shores of the Earth. So do they rise to unknown beautiful regions, which we shall never see.
