According to director Ed Adlum, a friend of his invited him to Universal Studios for an opportunity to meet Steven Spielberg a few years after the huge success of Les Dents de la mer (1975). He shook Spielberg's hand, and told him that he used to be a filmmaker. When Spielberg asked what movies he had directed, he replied, "'Invasion of the Blood Farmers'." Spielberg immediately turned around and walked away without saying a single word.
According to the director, most of the cast members worked for a six-pack of beer as payment.
The film was shot over three weekends, with a $24,000 budget. It never made its money back.
Cast members Richard Erickson and Richard Kennedy were so bad at memorizing dialogue that they ended up having to read off cue cards.
