Barry Morse found it quite hard in working with Gene Barry during production of "The Adventurer." He said that Barry was generally unpleasant and behaved like a prima donna.
This was the final series from the creative team of producer Monty Berman and writer Dennis Spooner.
Stuart Damon recently seen in Les champions (1968) was hired to play the character Vince. Damon explains on the DVD of the show how he first met Barry. "He comes walking into the hotel and I stood up and the first thing he said to me was 'How the hell tall ARE you?' I said 'I'm six foot three but I crouch a lot in scenes'. That was the entire conversation and I was finished from that day onwards. I was younger than he was and I was taller than he was and that was completely unacceptable". Damon found himself sidelined, until the point where he was simply told he was off the show. It's assumed that his replacement, Garrick Hagon's Gavin Taylor, simply used the same scripts written/planned for Vince.
Gene Barry had a problem learning his lines and therefore insisted on using 'idiot boards' held off camera, Catherine Schell recalls in her DVD interview: "I remember that while he was fluffing his lines, he shouted at me as if it was my fault. He was a most unpleasant person to work with."
Barry Morse played Professor Victor Bergman in the science fiction series Cosmos 1999 (1975). He did not return in the second season, and was replaced by his "The Adventurer" co-star Catherine Schell as the morphing alien Maya.
