One redeeming feature: the wrestlers

It would not be entirely unfair to describe this film as a dated piece of "honest teacher tames rough rascals". It has been done better before and it has been done better since. Some of the youth rebellion ideas have become unintentionally funny.

The one redeeming feature of the piece are the wrestlers. Gert Fröbe as a professional wrestler, fixed results, faked injuries and all is a sight to be treasured. The connection to the main plot is slim - Gert shows the teacher a few moves for self-defense, and one night the rebellious youth abandons a planned physical attack when our teacher is accompanied by some of these silverbacks.

The headlines in the newspapers at the booth are about Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiary, former queen of Iran, who has just been divorced from Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Gaffes
The plot is located in Munich/Bavaria, so the registration number of the car Seidel an the boys restored should begin with M, but it begins with RS for Remscheid/Northrhine-Westphalia.

Versions alternatives
After the film was released theatrically in October 1958 there was some controversy with the scene where Dr. Seidel tells his students that the chance to win at a gambling machine is 1:37. A German lobby organization protested against this, stating that the chance to win is fixed at 1:4 by law. The result was that after 30th January 1959 a statement was put at the beginning of the film citing the error.
