- Cpl. Allison, USMC: You don't have to be afraid of me, ma'am. That was just drunk talk. I'd never hurt you! I'd rather *die* first!
- Sister Angela: Only God knows what'll happen to us.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: And He won't tell, huh, ma'am?
- Sister Angela: He might.
- Sister Angela: [Mr. Allison has been drinking sake and is quite drunk] Mr. Allison... what is the matter?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: [barely able to talk] Matter? Nothin's the matter. What makes ya think somethin's the matter?
- [Drinks some more]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Whatcha gotta be a nun for?
- [Drinks again]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: That's my luck. That's ol' Allison's luck. If ya gotta be a nun, why ain't ya old and ugly? Why do ya gotta have big blue eyes... and a beautiful smile...
- [mumbles into his bottle]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: ... and freckles?
- [last lines]
- Marine: I don't get it, Cap'n. Four howitzers, plenty of ammo, no breechblocks. They haven't fired a round.
- Marine Captain: Beats me.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: [Sister Angela walks up next to Allison as he stares at the waves on the shoreline; beat] Hello, Ma'am.
- Sister Angela: Good morning, Mr. Allison.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: I must've been off my rocker last night. A marine oughtn't to get married. His duties are with the family or the corps. One of 'em's gotta get the short end. In the service, they'd ask us, 'what's better? A bad husband, or a bad marine. Well, he ends up *both*. Do me a favor, huh, ma'am? Just... just forget I opened my big mouth.
- Sister Angela: [walking away] ... certainly, Mr. Allison.
- [He continues to stare out at the waves]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Shh! Of course I am, ma'am alive and kickin'. Now, didn't I tell you never to leave this cave?
- [wagging his finger at her]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: I am very put out with you...
- [she starts to argue]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: yes, I am! *Put out!*
- [first lines]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Let's just keep it quiet, ma'am. You speak English?
- Sister Angela: Yes.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Are there any Japs around?
- Sister Angela: You're... You're an American.
- Sister Angela: She was a model before she joined the community. Her face was in all the fashion magazines.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: [Surprised] Yeah?
- Sister Angela: Sister Mary Sidelus was the loveliest girl I ever saw.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Well, what did she want to be a nun for?
- Sister Angela: Because it gave her greater happiness than anything else.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: I don't get it.
- Sister Angela: Well maybe there are some others who wouldn't understand a man wanting to be a Marine.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Ma'am, I just got to tell ya...
- Sister Angela: What?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: If you go back home again, ma'am, don't do it, ma'am. Please, please don't do it.
- Sister Angela: Do what?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Take those vows. Those ... those final ones. Don't do it, huh, ma'am? I, um, I never loved anything or anybody before. I've never even lived before. Not really lived... inside. So that's why I want to ask you to marry me. I want to look after you. Not only while we're here but, uh, for the rest of our livres. I couldn't keep from sayin' it, ma'am, So, uh, tell me if there's a chance, huh? I ... I don't mean to give offense, but, uh ... is there?
- Sister Angela: No, Mr. Allison. You see I've already given my heart to Christ, our Lord.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: You mean like you was engaged or somethin'?
- Sister Angela: Yes. This is the ring. And when I make my final vows, I'll wear a gold one. A marriage ring.
- Sister Angela: Oh, I ... I didn't know. I didn't know it was set up like that. I uh, I guess I had no right to speak.
- [Awkward pause, then he get up]
- Sister Angela: Well, I guess I'll, uh, go fix that lean-to for you.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: My first D.I. ... that's, uh, drill instructor, ma'am ... when I was a recruit, he looks me up and down, he says, "Lad, I'm gonna make you hate my guts." The old peace pipe. He sure kept his promise. There were times I wanted to commit murder. Then I seen the light and I started being a Marine. Other guys, ya know, most of 'em, they got their home ... families. Me? I got the Marine Corps. Like you got the church.
- Sister Angela: [Hesitantly] I'm ... I'm sure we have things in common.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: [Confused] Yeah.
- [pause]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Yeah!
- Sister Angela: You should have known my D.I.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Your D.I., ma'am?
- Sister Angela: Yes. Sister Brigitta, the mistress of novices, They had a name for her too.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Yeah? What was that?
- Sister Angela: We called her the ... the "Holy Terror."
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Let me tell you something, ma'am. We're gonna be on this island for years and years. 'Til the war's over anyway. If my guys were comin' they would have been here by now. What I mean, we've been bypassed.
- Sister Angela: How, Mr. Allison?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Just you and me, see? So, what's the point your being a nun if we're all alone? Answer me that. You can't, can you? 'Cause there is no point. No more than my being a Marine.
- Sister Angela: Of what faith are you, Mr. Allison?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Huh?
- Sister Angela: Well, what church did your parents raise you in?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Oh, I didn't have no parents. I was an orphanage kid.
- Sister Angela: You mean you never knew your parents? Asides when you were little.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: I mean there I was at the Allison Street entrance one morning in an empty egg crate. Allison Street, Milwaukee. I mean I figure I'm uh ... I figure I'm illegitimate. Well, what's the difference I say. I got born, didn't I?
- Sister Angela: There's a great deal of truth in what you said.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Nothing like it, ma'am. Not a bit. Like I said we're going to be alone on this island for years and years. The very next thing 2,000 Japanese show up. How wrong can a guy get?
- Sister Angela: Dear, Mr. Allison.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: [Drunk from drinking sake] We don't belong to nothin' beyond this island. All we got is it and each other. Like Adam and Eve. Like, uh, we was the first two people on the earth and this was the Garden of Eden.
- Sister Angela: We might not be here tomorrow. Tomorrow might not come. Perhaps God doesn't intend for me to take my final vows.
- Sister Angela: Why are we in the cave?
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: The Japanese have come back, ma'am.
- [She notices her nun's garb is hanging]
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Oh, I, uh ... you were shakin' with cold ma'am. I had to get you out of those wet clothes.
- Sister Angela: Thatnk you, Mr. Allison.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: I don't deserve no thanks. It's my fault you got sick. I was drunk and , uh, you got scared of me and ran away from me in the rain.
- Sister Angela: I ran away?
- [pause]
- Sister Angela: Oh, yes.
- Cpl. Allison, USMC: Please forgive me, ma'am.
- Sister Angela: I wasn't running from you. You wouldn't have done me any harm, I knew that. I was running from the truth.
