Kashmir Ki Kali (1964) :
Brief Review -
One can't believe that Shakti Samanta could make such an exhilarating rom-com, and then he gave it his own thrilling touch. Shammi Kapoor lovers are in for a treat. Kashmir Ki Kali has all the trademarks that can make fangirls go mad over Shammi Kapoor, be it his looks, the way he flirts, romances, or even the action. Written by Ranjan Bose and Ramesh Pant, the film kept me grinning for two hours, and I couldn't really believe that it was a Shakti Samanta movie. Then, it has a couple of twists in the last half hour that make it look like a thrilling Samata flick. Much like other popular romantic comedies from the 1950s, Kashmir Ki Kali has a rich hero falling in love with a poor heroine. He doesn't tell her about his wealth, and he pretends to be a driver. They fall in love, but there is an antagonist who wants to marry the heroine, and of course, our hero will beat him. But wait, we are not through with the story yet. There is a backstory related to the hero and heroine with the swipe formula, but in this movie, it's quite different from others. What I liked the most about this film was the flow of storytelling. I never felt bored. Shammi Kapoor at his charming best, Sharmila Tagore as a beautiful Kashmiri girl, and Pran come with an accent that we have never heard before. The one-liners between Shammi and Sharmila are cute. "Bol dena me tumse mohabbat karta hu," he says. She replies, "Main jhooth nahin bolati." "Main bhi jhooth nahi bolta"-what a way to propose. You'll see many adorable moments like this in the film that keep you hooked and grinning all the time. Nayyar Saab has given us "Isharon Isharon Mein" and "Chand sa Roshan Chehra" to remember forever. What else do you need from the quintessential romantic comedy of Bollywood? Samanta's vision was so clear and healthy that the film never looked like it was going out of line. It's so rooted and so enchanting.

'Kashmir Ki Kali' is a long but charming romantic Hindi melodrama. There are some gorgeous locations in Kashmir which fill the viewers with nostalgia. The film is packed with songs most of which are rather melodious, "Taareef Karoon Kya" and "Deewaana Hua Baadal" being my favorite. Shammi Kapoor is debonair and restless, and Sharmila Tagore delightfully coy. The two complement each other wonderfully and their chemistry works even today. There is some unnecessary melodrama towards the end and the film would have been better served without it. Still quite enjoyable.

When I heard the title,I felt the female protagonist might be a headstrong lady or a fear-evoking personality.Instead, she's a tender and lovable 'Champa',. It's a good love story with a neat twist in the second half, which made the film quite watchable and special. The major plus points are the beautiful settings and great music (Each and every song is beautiful to say the least.).The heroine Sharmila Tagore looks extremely beautiful and charmingly innocent.Shammi Kapoor too is good looking. The film moves quite smoothly without making you feel bored. However ,the climax turned out to be a big drag with a rather unusually long fights. Nevertheless,it can be watched with less expectations if you don't mind to kill time !!
An absolutely fantastic and fun filled movie. The songs are so beautiful , on that count alone this movie deserves 9 stars. The composer is the inimitable O P Nayyar who has crafted each song with great taste and each song is a connoisseur's delight. The song picturization is just excellent and Shammi and Sharmila excel in these scenes. The dance sequence " Nigahon Nigahon" is a feast to the eyes. And then the truth hits us hard as to how the Bollywood standards in music has deteriorated from then to now. I run out of superlatives for this movie's music and its picturization in the background of breathtaking locale. The entire movie is shot in Kashmir and the director Shakti Samanta deserves great praise for the finesse with which he has selected the different locations. The movie is shot mostly on outdoor locations and the camera work is just superb. It is sad we don't get to see such movies anymore. This movie has lost none of it's charm even to this day. This movie ranks as one of the greatest achievements of the commercial cinema genre. The rest of the cast apart from Shammi,Sharmila and Pran are just about enough for their roles. Pran gives a hilarious twist to the villain's role with his manneristic laugh. The storyline, the plot and the rest of the stuff about this movie is just about average as can be expected in a commercial potboiler.
All in all it is fit to form a part of the discerning collector's treasure.
