Contrary to a previous review on IMDB from 2006, the recent 2017~2019 re-release of this film under the title Pussycats Paradise (1960) by Sprocket Flicks for Amazon Prime Video is of terrible quality with film grain, scratches and splotches, and has been SEVERELY cut down to a mere 69 minutes from its original 90 minute runtime. As you can imagine, it has been scrubbed clean of smut, but also a great deal of continuity and story. You are taken on a wild journey of "how did we get here now?" around every bend, with entire segments of the character's lives obliterated for the sake of preserving their modesty. Especially the female characters in the camp, who can barely get in a speaking role on screen because their chests are so naughty.

I rate this as 6 stars, out of respect for the film as a whole as it was clearly well written and directed, with a quality cast and nice storyline. I just hope to see it some day, in its full unabashed glory. I'm very disappointed, because it was otherwise rather good.

Although preceded on Talking Pictures by the usual disclaimer that it was rated 18 as "it dealt with adult themes" 'The Nudist Story' is possessed of a childish innocence that today seems quite charming; apart from the industrial-strength consumption of tobacco by many of the cast.

The title serves as a warning, but at first it all seems to start quite innocently with the prim young heroine addressing a group of shareholders around a boardroom table. Although the fact it's in Technicolor already sets it apart it and the eccentric jazz score by Tony Crombie serves as warning that when she goes down to the woods that day she's sure of a big surprise in the form of a group of well-spoken gentlemen and young ladies engaged in the most innocent of pursuits - complete with singalongs - who just happened to wearing no clothes.

Naturally it's all done in the best POSSIBLE taste...!!

THE NUDIST STORY is your garden-variety nudie flick, with a threadbare plot of sorts to keep the momentum going and more than half the running time devoted to cinema verite-style footage of men and women going about their business at a nudist camp. It was made by the 'British Sunbathing Association' and feels at times like a propaganda flick; you can guess the kind of viewers this type of film attracted.

Lead actress Shelly Martin puts in a surprisingly good performance in the leading role as a prim and proper young woman who treats the idea of nudist camps with the usual prejudice. When she inherits one and begins to learn more about it, her eyes are opened to a very different world. A love triangle sub-plot of sorts serves to drag out the short running time a little further, while topless nudity from woman after woman - not all of them young and nubile either - is the order of the day. It's nothing more than a forgettable fluff piece in retrospect.

From the outset I must recuse myself from any critical appraisal of this film. Because it is certainly not my type of film. It contains several song and dance routines which again are not to my taste.

So the background to my having seen the film is quite simply this. I attended a dinner party given by husband-and-wife couple. Have been my friends since teenage years.

So when their guests had departed, and they asked me to remain and watch a film with them. On seeing the title of the film I was placed in a painful predicament. I put my own feelings to one side so as not to offend them

So my observations and only observations are these. The film was made in Britain in 1960. Apart from social mores. Cinema and TV output very much reflected a conservative society.

So I was quite surprised to see full frontal nudity of both men and women in a substantial amount of the footage of this film. Children also depicted in some scenes, but their bodies were not exposed.

I could not find any information as to the location for the shooting. It appeared to be a large country house in Britain. Although that could have only been for the scenes of arrival at the centre. Most the footage was probably shot in a naturalist centre. And many of the persons would have been members of that centre.

Quite apart from my recused comments on the film itself. The production values as to regards the filming of it. Were very high indeed. The quality of the colour is not exceptional but fair considering the year in which it was shot and processed.

After further investigation, I was curious as to the certification of the original film.

There being in Britain at the time, only three classifications awarded by the British Board of Film Censors. If they awarded a classification. U fit for universal viewing, A . Adults only and children accompanied by an adult and X for any remaining films which the BBFC deemed fit for adult viewing only.

I was surprised to learn this film was classified as A. Effectively what we might deem today as PG.

A final comment. You will not be surprised to learn that the married couple hosted me and myself. Spent several hours discussing the film at its end.

This film is being screened this week by Talking Pictures, my favourite British TV channel because of its old black-and-white films, though "The Nudist Story" is in rich colour.

It all seems very harmless nowadays,with a number of topless women and glimpses of pubic hair on both sexes. But when it was first released back in 1960 I was 15 years old and was curious about what women looked like and around that time I did watch another nudist film. As I remember it, pin-up photos in girlie magazines and the nudist magazine "Health and Efficiency" had photos of both sexes with the groin areas airbrushed out, so I was a little surprised to see the pubic hair, though in most scenes the actors carefully employed a towel so as not to show very much.

I watched the first part of this film, with its predictable plot, endured the synchronised swimming and then fast-forwarded through the camp concert and the rest of the film. Enough said.

This title popped up on youtube. I'm sure it was marketed for its titillating subject, a throwaway "adult" low-bill title. It's actually fairly well made, with decent acting and production values. The story is exactly what you might expect, but it's not bad. Except for the skin, this could be Disney film.

There is some padding in the middle, where we're treated to not one but two full-length songs. Maybe they were giving the drive-in audience a chance to go to the snack bar. Also, being very English and very 1960, it's extra shades of whiteness.

It is rather strange that TPTV has given this film a 18 rating but when it was shown in cinemas it was given an A certificate which meant that children under 16 could view it if accompanied by an adult. It has been reclassified as a 15 by the BBFC.

Films such as this would often be shown at the Cinephone Cinema, opposite Selfridges. It would be supporting a Bridgette Bardot X certificate film.

This film is so mildly inoffensive and rather amateur and about as erotic as cold rice pudding.

Shelly Martin, the actress in the lead role, she dealt with Miscellaneous Crew for "Deep Throat", the famous porn film from 1972. Here, 12 years before, she found a pretext to show us her tits and her ass. That's all!

One of a mass of soft-porn films produced by the British industry at that time, catering to the semi-pissed young blokes set who needed somewhere to go between the pub and an early-hours curry, with cinemas showing them suitably late in that 'slot'.

BUT -- this one is a little different, no attempt at comedy, and I think it was perhaps envisaged as a marketing film for nudist camps?!

The recent (2025) review by Marlburian is pretty accurate, a couple of the others have given this nonsense 10/10, which is quite bizarre, if you rate THIS at 10, then WHAT do you give the likes of Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, Roman Holiday, ET, Alien, etc etc??!

The lead actress made very few films - a real oddity being that (according to IMDB) she did this and "A Few Dollars More" - makes you wonder what clip she sent Sergio Leone??!

One thing the cast had in common was an acting style that made wood look animated, a 2nd such common factor was that they all sounded TERRBLY PAWSH! Oh, and another was they didn't work that much.

I'd put this movie in any group that was ranking "the worst films of all time", due to the laughable acting, subject matter (as someone said, reminded them of the 50s/60s Health & Efficiency mag, much loved by schoolboys with sticky fingers) and the wildly irritating incidental music.

About 2 thirds of the way through, a song and dance routine occurred, like a toned down West Side Story, with a cast presumably recruited from actual nudist camps??

The same night I saw this on TV, the same channel showed a real gem from the British film industry, The LadyKillers, a very odd transposition?!

This title has been available for quite some time from Something Weird Video under the title For Members only, The Nudist Story. This was the original complete title in the UK. Film quality is excellent. The opening credits briefly switch from the original to the title page of "Pussycat Paradise" and then back to the original. That was a brief alternate title in the mid to later 60s.

I don't have any idea how long this movie has been available, but it was a happy shock to learn of it's original British title, Google it, and discovery that it has been here for some time.

Beyond the opening credits, the film remains complete and beautiful quality. There is even a film trailer after the end of the feature.

I only found out about this movie recently, and managed to download for viewing.

The premise was predictable, having being used in other movies before however, the idea of a nudist camp definitely was different.

The story followed the expected line, and ended with the expected conclusion but, on it's travels, it was rather enjoyable, and very unexpected. In places, it was quiet funny.

The only thing that slightly spoiled was, the late introduction of naturism etiquette. I've never been to a nudist camp yet, I am aware that members are obliged to carry a towel at all times.

The two reasons are very simple. For new male members, it is to cover up expected unwanted displays until the mind and body adjusts, and for all members to place on seats or other areas where they would sit, for hygiene reasons.

I was 2 years old when this was made so, it's possible the towel etiquette came out sometime after, I was much older when I read about it.

A quirky movie that is not quiet as smutty as some might think, and the granddaughter and aunt characters would espouse this, as the movie progresses.

A rather enjoyable view, and I did manage to see the uncut version.

A beautiful, altogether proper business lady (Shelly Martin) inherits a nudist colony following the death of her philanthropic Grandfather, and rather than selling it to clear hefty death duties, she becomes amorously entwined with the affable manager Bob (Brian Cobby). Featuring a pleasantly jaunty score, The Nudist Story is a charmingly frothy romantic drama with capable, terribly nice, if somewhat clipped, prodigiously middle-class performances. Herrington's modestly titillating oddity has tasteful scenes of prettified, sun-dappled nudity, mostly bots and tops, governed by an amusingly ingenious methodology of obscuring most of the male and female pudenda! As ribald exploitation, The Nudist Story is tame, but taken as a cinematic singularity, a blisteringly technicolor, early 60s time-capsule, it remains utterly fascinating, the luminous Shelly Martin and stolid suitor Brian Cobby make for wholesome lovebirds. A dramatically slight piece, the prosaic dialogue delivered by the mostly nude cast is so bizarrely incongruous for the time period, The Nudist Story distractingly exudes an almost fever-dream-like quality, and, frankly, I can't readily think of another British film with the same proto-Lynchian vibe. The karaoke musical interludes and fleshly flourish of a lithe nude male arbitrarily doing somersaults suggested to me that The Nudist Story might well prove to be something quite special!

I saw a movie with the same title,in color.I loved the story and the movie.I have been looking for a copy of it for years with no luck.It was about a girl who somehow had the authority to confiscate a nudist camp because somehow she was in control of its assets.The participants wanted to show her around,and convince her of the wholeness of the nudist lifstyle.She reluctantly agreed to meet the nudists.She became somewhat attracted by a man who ran the camp.She was showed the camp by him.Later,she removed her clothes and participated in the lifestyle.The camp was saved.Another actress liked the same guy,so there was a little catfighting going on.This lady was introduced to another nudist couple,who were friends with the man who ran the camp.So they helped convince her of the wholeness of the lifestyle,also.I remember her eating an apple,sitting at a picnic table with this man.It was a cute scene.Also,there was some kind of a party for "the old lady",who was the actual owner.Can you help me locate this film?
