During the film, "Dupin" recites the second verse of Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem "The Raven". Contrary to the implication that no one would have known Edgar Allan Poe's name in 1848, at that time he was already a highly regarded poet. Poe died in 1849 at the age of 40.
This film bombed at the box office, resulting in a loss to MGM of $455,000 ($5.53M in 2024) according to studio records. It did not even make back its negative cost, let alone expenses for duplication, distribution and advertising.
After the first meeting with Madeleine, Charles Thevenet addresses his pet raven named Villon, after the French poet François Villon, and quotes from Villon's "Ballade des dames du temps jadis" ("Ballad of the Ladies of Times Past"): "Où sont les neiges d'antant?" ("Oh, where are the snows of yesteryear!") Later, Dupin quotes the same ballad in English. He also reads a few lines of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven".
