Adventurer Allan Quartermain (Stewart Granger) agrees to lead wealthy Englishwoman Elizabeth 'Beth' Curtis (Deborah Kerr) and her brother John Goode (Richard Carlson) on an expedition into an unexplored region in Dark Africa in an attempt to locate her husband Henry, who disappeared two years ago while searching for the legendary mines of King Solomon. It's wild animals, snakes, cannibals, danger, and budding romance all the way.

King Solomon's Mines is based on an 1885 novel of the same name by English author Sir H(enry) Rider Haggard. It is the third of five films -- King Solomon's Mines (1919), Les mines du Roi Salomon (1937), Allan Quatermain et les Mines du roi Salomon (1985), and King Solomon's Mines (1986) plus a TV miniseries Allan Quatermain et la Pierre des ancêtres (2004) -- based on Haggard's novel. The novel was adapted for this movie by American composer and screenwriter Helen Deutsch.

At the start of the film, a title comes up stating: AFRICA 1897

Allan, Elizabeth, and John manage to escape the caves by following an airpocket that leads to an underground stream that leads to an outside river. They meet up with Umbopa (Siriaque) and his rebels and learn that Umbopa is about to challenge Twala (Baziga) in an attempt to get back his right to reign as King of the Watussi tribe. After engaging in a fight, Umbopa manages to kill Twala and is placed on the throne. In the final scene, Umbopa waves goodbye to his friends as they begin their return journey.
