Cendrillon

FAQ

Treated as a slave by her wicked stepmother and her two cruel stepsisters, Cinderella gets her heart's wish when her Fairy Godmother uses magic to send her off to a Royal Ball being thrown by the King in order to find a bride for his son, Prince Charming. The only hitch is that Cinderella must return home by the last stroke of midnight or the magic will wear off, her clothes will become rags, her carriage will become a pumpkin, and her horses will turn back into mice.

"Cinderella" is a European folk tale that can be found in many countries and under many different names. Disney's version of Cinderella is based on "Cendrillon, ou La petite Pantoufle de Verre" ("Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper"), published in 1697 in a collection of literary fairy tales written by French author Charles Perrault.

It's at the ball. Just as Anastasia and Drizella are getting ready to meet the prince, the court announcer says 'Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine, daughters of Lady Tremaine.'

In Charles Perrault's story, she is nameless. The stepsisters call her "Cendrillon" ("Cinderella") as a way of mocking her because she was so often covered in cinders from the fireplaces and chimneys. In later versions of the story, it is suggested that her real name is Ella, and her stepsisters simply added the term "Cinder" out of spite. In this film, it's the title character's real name.

After trying the glass slipper on both Anastasia and Drizella to no avail, the Duke asks Lady Tremaine whether there are any other young ladies in the house to which Cinderella's evil stepmother replies, "No", secure in the knowledge that Cinderella is locked in the tower bedroom and the key is safely tucked into her pocket. However, unbeknownst to her, Gus and Jacques have managed to steal the key from her pocket, haul it up the stairs, and gotten past Lucifer (with Bruno's help). Just as the Duke is about to leave, Cinderella comes running down the stairs and asks to try on the slipper. Following the order to let every maiden in the kingdom try on the slipper, the Duke motions for his foreman to bring it to him. As the foreman rushes forward with the slipper, the stepmother trips him with her cane, and the slipper crashes to the floor where it lay shattered in hundreds of pieces. The Duke is devastated, but his devastation turns to joy when Cinderella produces the other glass slipper from her pocket. Much to her stepmother's surprise, the slipper fits perfectly. In the final scene, Cinderella and the Prince are married. They walk down the stairs of the church, Cinderella loses one of her slippers, which the Duke puts back on her foot, and she and the Prince ride away in their carriage while her mouse friends throw rice.

Yes. Charles Perrault's original French version can be read here. Numerous English translations can be read and/or downloaded from various sites such as the one at Project Gutenberg.
