Lauren Bacall turned down the role as Ruth Wilson because it called for her to appear in a bathing suit. She said: "I'm not a bathing beauty ... I'll be embarrassed."
Jones Beach is situated on the south shore of Long Island.
Jones Beach [State Park] is an actual place on Long Island, which opened as a tourist mecca in 1929, and continues to be one of the most heavily visited summer recreation spots on the East Coast as of 2024. Noteworthy for its buildings designed in the Act Deco style, the park features an Italianate-style water tower at the center of a traffic circle, and also has a bandshell, theater, and games area (paddle tennis, volleyball, playground, etc.).
Dale Robertson and Jeff Richards, in early uncredited roles as a hunky pair of lifeguards, appear bare-chested, with dialogue, in minimal (1948) bathing attire in their only scenes. Ronald Reagan, although appearing bare-chested in much of the publicity, is only seen unclothed in the imaginary vision of Virginia Mayo at the end of the trial sequence; Eddie Bracken also appears bare-chested in the publicity, but never in the actual film.
