An extra star for tackling the subject

A production of The Protestant Film Co, this film was not released to theaters...but it did have a professional cast and crew including Edward Cahn as director and many well known actors.

Dramatically it's a little stiff. The voice over is unusual in that it is necessary top move the plot along....it explains what the protagonist is thinking.

There were other films in the late 40s that tried to tackle the subject, but this film certainly goes deeper. It explores the idea of subtle racism and folks who think they are "enlightened" but still harbor some prejudices. Also, how children are affected by what their parents think and say. It's not perfect, but considering it is 1949, it's not as dated as it could be.

As a dramatic film, it's mediocre...but as learning tool in 1949 I would like to think it changed some minds.

Anecdotes
The film, a social, religious drama, presented by The Protestant Film Commission and The Antidefamation League, had a non-theatrical release, opening in 100 churches in the USA and Canada on 18. Oct. 1949.
