Modifier
  • [last lines]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: [to police reporter] Write his story good.
  • [Patty Winters can be seen sleeping in bed when the sound of knocking can be heard. She slowly wakes up and looks at the door]
  • Patty Winters: Who is it?
  • Barney Nolan: It's me, Barney.
  • Patty Winters: Barney?
  • [Patty gets up and puts on a robe as she approaches the door]
  • Patty Winters: Just a minute.
  • [Patty opens the door and Barney enters, who proceeds to embrace her]
  • Barney Nolan: Listen, get dressed. We're going away. Tonight.
  • Patty Winters: [confused] What?
  • Barney Nolan: Do as I tell you. Start dressing.
  • Patty Winters: Barney?
  • [Nolan holds her and walks her towards another door]
  • Barney Nolan: [agitated] There's no time to lose, Patty. Start dressing.
  • Patty Winters: [with concern] Alright, Barney. But... you scare me so. What's the matter?
  • Barney Nolan: You heard me mention Packy Reed last night? The big wheel who runs the rackets? Well, he's trying to frame me over an accidental shooting. So, I'm going away until things simmer down. You're going with me.
  • Patty Winters: It's too fast, Barney. I can't think this fast.
  • Barney Nolan: You got to trust me, Patty. Please.
  • Patty Winters: Barney. Stay here. Fight back. It's the only way.
  • Barney Nolan: [nervously] You don't understand. I'm being railroaded. Packy Reed and his gunners are out to get me. All my buddies at the precinct are out to catch a goat for Packy Reed. I'm in the middle. One or the other will nail me for sure.
  • Patty Winters: Barney, this is crazy. Clear your name, why run away?
  • Barney Nolan: For sixteen years I've been a cop, Patty. Fox sixteen years I've been living in dirt. And take it from me, some of it is bound to rub off on you. You get to hate people, everyone you meet. I'm sick of them. The racket boys, the strong-arms, the stoolies, the hooligans. I'm through with them all. Believe me, after this jam, I'm trying out for the best after all, Patty. You and I, we'll go away. Get a fresh start somewhere, I got the money.
  • [Nolan pauses for a few seconds as he tries to keep himself together]
  • Barney Nolan: I have it saved.
  • [Nolan turns towards Patty's direction as the latter dresses herself]
  • Barney Nolan: [agiated] Please Patty, hurry! Will you?
  • [Patty silently approaches Nolan as she tries to comprehend everything he's said]
  • Patty Winters: Barney, the money. Did it belong to Packy Reed? Mark said...
  • [Upon hearing Mark's name, Nolan gets enraged. He grabs Patty and glares at her]
  • Barney Nolan: Mark? What's he got to do with this?
  • Patty Winters: Barney.
  • Barney Nolan: Why was he hanging around here last night? What did he tell you about me?
  • Patty Winters: He's trying to help...
  • Barney Nolan: Help me? Ten minutes ago, he tried to take me in! What's been going on between you two?
  • Patty Winters: [frightened] Barney, wait...
  • Barney Nolan: [shouting] He's turned you against me, hasn't he? Tell me, what did he say? Tell me! Tell me!
  • [Nolan furiously slaps Patty across the face. Patty falls onto the bed and begins crying as Nolan watches her. As he realizes what he's done, Nolan looks at Patty for a seconds before he turns and leaves, closing the door as he goes]
  • [Mark Brewster can be seen driving a car. He is heading in pursuit of Barney Nolan. As he's driving, he can be seen speaking into a radio]
  • Mark Brewster: Operation Tin God. Repeat. Operation Tin God. He may be headed for Castle Heights Tract model home. Address: 466 South Camden Drive. I'm heading that way now. Brewster, Sergeant of Detectives. Clear.
  • [Mark Brewster can be seen arriving at the sight of a shooting. Barney Nolan is also present. Mark pulls out a notepad and looks down at the dead body]
  • Mark Brewster: Barney, how'd you make it so fast?
  • Barney Nolan: I shot him. I was bringing him in and he tried to break.
  • Mark Brewster: [somewhat surprised] Did you have to kill him?
  • Barney Nolan: It was an accident, the shot went wild.
  • Mark Brewster: Take it easy, Barney. I'll write out the report. Who was he?
  • Barney Nolan: Perc Martin. A bookmaker.
  • Policeman Cooper: [approaches] I'll call the coroner, Barney.
  • Barney Nolan: Yeah, Cooper. You do that.
  • [Nolan looks at Brewster]
  • Barney Nolan: Don't let it throw you, kid. He was a crumb.
  • Mark Brewster: In court, maybe he'd have got thirty days.
  • Barney Nolan: Yeah. Too bad.
  • [Barney turns and walks off through the crowd of onlookers.]
  • [Barney Nolan can be seen in Capt. Gunnarson's office. The Captain himself is also present]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: When are you gonna stop thinking with your trigger finger, Nolan?
  • Barney Nolan: [shrugs his shoulders and sits down] He tried to break, Captain.
  • Capt. Gunnarson: [seething] I heard, *cop.*
  • [Nolan stands up and glares at Gunnarson]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Most of this happened before I came here, not my problem.
  • Capt. Gunnarson: [the Captain throws a folder on the desk] What happened tonight is. Either you're going to start using judgement, Nolan, or you can climb back into uniform and grow a new set of brains out in the daisy fields.
  • Barney Nolan: Sorry I put you in a spot, Captain.
  • Capt. Gunnarson: There's no spot, you were a police officer, acting in the line of duty. Nobody gouges us for that as long as I'm in this office. We gave you a gun, the authority to use it, one is no good without the other.
  • [the Captain looks behind him before turning towards Nolan again]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: They don't know that out there, so they'll scream blue murder until the next time they need a man with a badge.
  • [the Captain sits down at his desk]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Get out, I'm busy.
  • [Nolan turns and leaves the office, closing the door on the way out]
  • [at the police station, Barney Nolan can be seen getting ready to leave after having been repremanded by the Captain. As he's getting ready, someone approaches him. This is Mark Brewster]
  • Mark Brewster: How'd he take it?
  • Barney Nolan: True, blue, and sore as a boil. And fed to the gills.
  • Mark Brewster: Try and forget it for awhile, Barney.
  • Barney Nolan: Yeah...
  • Mark Brewster: Look, you've been trying to teach me to laugh off what we run into.
  • Barney Nolan: Thanks a lot, Mark. I got a date with Patty.
  • Mark Brewster: [smiles] Have fun.
  • Barney Nolan: [Smiles back] Right.
  • [Nolan turns and exits]
  • [at the apartment of Ernst Sternmuller, a light can be seen flashing above the entrance, signaling that someone wants to enter. Upon noticing this, Sternmuller gets up and walks over to the door. When he opens it, Barney Nolan enters. Nolan takes a look around the apartment for a few seconds before he suddenly approaches Sternmuller, who looks panicked as Nolan grabs him]
  • Barney Nolan: This time, no one must hear.
  • [Nolan pulls out some money]
  • Barney Nolan: This is money, see. Not just this, I'll give you more. Hundreds, hundreds, I will give you.
  • [Nolan starts to viciously shake Sternmuller]
  • Barney Nolan: Thousands. Do you hear me? Thousands.
  • [Sternmuller shakes his head]
  • Barney Nolan: Ah, you dummy.
  • [Nolan throws Sternmuller against a wall before picking up a pad of paper. He then looks down towards Sternmuller, to see that he's on the floor and not moving. Nolan approaches and examines him, only to realize that he's dead.]
  • [at the police station, Mark Brewster and Barney Nolan can be seen entering. Nolan walks up to the office of Capt. Gunnarson while Brewster heads to his desk. As Nolan approaches the Captain's office, the door opens and someone can be seen standing in the doorway. This is Capt. Gunnarson. Gunnarson looks a Nolan for a few seconds]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Go and pull your personal package from the file.
  • [Gunnarson goes back into his office and closes the door as Nolan proceeds to remove his coat]
  • [at the police station, Barney Nolan can be seen carrying a folder as he heads towards the office of Captain Gunnarson. When he reaches the office, he taps the door. After a few seconds, he opens the door and enters the office, where the Captain is present]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Later, detective.
  • [the Captain exits his office and looks towards his left]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Brewster, I'll have your report.
  • [as the Captain reenters his office, he takes Barney's folder]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Here, give me that.
  • [Barney exits the office as Mark Brewster enters the view before heading inside the office and closing the door behind him]
  • [Barney Nolan can be seen arriving at his home. As he enters, he closes to the door to find Mark Agar waiting for him. Nolan appears surprised]
  • Barney Nolan: Hi, Mark.
  • Mark Brewster: Hi, Barney.
  • [Brewster stares intensly at Nolan]
  • Mark Brewster: I'm taking you in.
  • [Nolan is silent for a few seconds before he walks over to a window and puts his coat down on a table]
  • Barney Nolan: You got a charge?
  • Mark Brewster: Homicide. First degree. You murdered Perc Martin.
  • Barney Nolan: [sarcastically] So, you've joined the club at the precinct. The "Hate Nolan" Club.
  • Mark Brewster: I'm doing my job.
  • Barney Nolan: Can't you spot a simple frame? Martin was one of Packy Reed's boys. Packy is out to scalp me. Packy has got it in for me.
  • Mark Brewster: [shakes his head] Uhuh, Barney.
  • Barney Nolan: [lights a cigarette] Alright. Martin made a break, so I shot him. He was loaded, so I made a touch. It's the first time, Mark. It's the first time in sixteen years I ever took.
  • [Brewster continues staring at Nolan]
  • Barney Nolan: Look, kid. We're pals. We don't make trouble for each other.
  • Mark Brewster: I drew a deaf-mute's case tonight. They thought he'd died in an accident falling down stairs.
  • Barney Nolan: What do they think now?
  • Mark Brewster: I haven't filed my report yet. You murdered Martin deliberately for the wad he was carrying.
  • Barney Nolan: I don't think you can prove that.
  • Mark Brewster: The deaf-mute proved it.
  • Barney Nolan: A dead witness is no good in court.
  • [Nolan suddenly appears surprised as Brewster pulls out a gun and levels it at him]
  • Mark Brewster: How did you know he was a witness?
  • [Nolan looks apprehensive]
  • Mark Brewster: You shot Martin the back. Then you went through his pockets. Then you fired two shots in the air. Before the deaf-mute died, he wrote those facts on a pad. What he saw.
  • [Nolan looks enraged as he stands up and glares malevolently at Brewster]
  • Barney Nolan: Listen, the guy was deaf. He was a dummy. Maybe he was blind, too. Yeah. Maybe he was part of Packy Reed's gang frame. That fits.
  • Mark Brewster: I came down here to get your reasons from you first. I got them. Let's go see Gunnarson.
  • [Nolan's mood shifts from rage to a sense of confusion]
  • Barney Nolan: You really mean it, kid? About taking me in?
  • Mark Brewster: [waves his gun] Come on, Barney.
  • Barney Nolan: [nervously] Come on, give my a day, will you? Just one day. Give me a break.
  • Mark Brewster: [shakes his head] Uhuh.
  • Barney Nolan: [dejectedly] Alright.
  • [Mark Brewster can be seen confront Barney Nolan with a gun at the latter's home with the intention to arrest him. Nolan appears to surrender, when, without warning, he grabs his coat and hits Brewster, knocking the gun out of his hand. He then pulls out a gun of his own and points it at Brewster]
  • Barney Nolan: Alright, come on. Stand up.
  • [as Brewster slowly stands up, Nolan grabs him and shoves him against the door]
  • Barney Nolan: Up against the wall, hands high, feet apart. You know the routine. You say the dummy wrote it all on a piece of paper. Which pocket is it in?
  • Mark Brewster: It's at the precinct. Like you always said. Evidence should be filed away safe.
  • [Nolan smiles maliciously]
  • Barney Nolan: You've got one big hole in your case, son. The dough. It's stowed. Well stowed. You'll never guess. And you'll never find it.
  • [Nolan points his gun at the back of Brewster's head. However, he doesn't shoot him. Instead, he hits him and knocks him unconscious. After this, Nolan grabs his coat and hat before leaving]
  • [following his attempt to arrest Barney Nolan, Mark Brewster can be seen talking to Captain Gunnarson in the latter's office. In addition, Brewster is holding some papers]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: I thought maybe you'd joined the navy.
  • Mark Brewster: [hands the papers to Gunnarson] I've got a murder for you, Captain.
  • Capt. Gunnarson: [gets up] Fine. I've got plenty of murders. All I'm interested in is murderers
  • Mark Brewster: The killer's name is Barney Nolan.
  • Capt. Gunnarson: [annoyed] Look, sonny-boy. I've heard that Perc Martin story eighteen times, and so has every other man in the precinct. A known underworld boss nails an accusation on a cop. What are we supposed to do? Turn handsprings and lock him up? Nolan killed Martin in the line of duty. Period. Unless there's evidence to the contrary, and there isn't.
  • Mark Brewster: [points to his papers] The guy who wrote that is dead. What he wrote is exactly how Barney Nolan killed Perc Martin.
  • [as the Captain looks at the papers, he then notices a wound on the back of Brewster's neck. He looks at it and sees that it's bleeding]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: How'd you get that?
  • Mark Brewster: Barney. I tried to bring him in.
  • Capt. Gunnarson: Alone?
  • [Brewster nods]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: You've still got lots to learn.
  • [the Captain returns his attention to the papers in his hand before setting it on his desk]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: I've been lucky. Nine years as precinct captain. This is the first time I've been pulled into the drain.
  • [Capt. Gunnarson can be seen in the passenger's seat of police car. He is in pursuit of Barney Nolan. He has just received a call from Mark Brewster. After finishing that, he speaks into the car's telephone]
  • Capt. Gunnarson: This is Captain Gunnarson. Relay to all cars. University Precinct in the vicinity of the Castle Heights subdivision. Operation Tin God. Suspect now wearing patrolman's uniform. Driving 1953 brown Ford 2-door sedan. May be headed for 466 South Camden Drive. Dragnet the area. Code 21. Use caution.
  • [the Captain hangs up the telephone]
