Emeric Pressburger attended the original Kitzbühel premiere of the German original, Das doppelte Lottchen. He was convinced to do an English remake by Alexander Korda of London Films.
The film was originally shot over a period of twelve weeks, starting in January 1952. London Films was so unsure of the film, that they released it in July 1953, more than a year after it was finished.
Guy Hamilton was asked to helm a week of re-shoots once it was deemed that the film didn't explain the story well enough. Hamilton never met either the twins or original writer/director Emeric Pressburger, who remains the sole credited director on the project.
The twins were cast mostly through newspaper ads. Producer Alexander Korda invited prospective twins to a tea party to his office in Piccadilly, where writer/director Emeric Pressburger gave the girls gifts. Cameraman Chris Challis used the opportunity to film test footage of the girls with his 16 mm camera. Yolande and Charmaine Larthe were cast after a further round of interviews.
