A Western Icon Was Angry He Didn't Win An Oscar

From "The Searchers" to "Rio Bravo," John Wayne is synonymous with some of the best Westerns of all time. He's also partly responsible for shaping old Hollywood's romanticized image of the Wild West -- a place where rugged manly men upheld justice in lawless lands. Wayne set out to redefine Western heroes on the screen, and his legacy suggests that he accomplished his goal. However, "The Duke" was also passionate about movies that promoted his patriotic ideals, and that's why he was angry at not winning the Best Actor Oscar at the 22nd Academy Awards.

The ceremony in question saw Wayne and Broderick Crawford receive nominations for Allan Dwan's "Sands of Iwo Jima" and Robert Rossen's "All the King's Men," respectively. Wayne's movie is a World War II drama about the battle between American and Japanese soldiers on the eponymous island.

James Dean: 11 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the 'Rebel' Icon
For a guy who starred in only three movies, James Dean has had an oversized impact on pop culture.

Eighty-five years after his birth (on February 8, 1931) and 60 years after the release of his final film ("Giant"), Dean is still our top poster boy for teen angst. And it didn't hurt his legend that his death in a car crash at age 24 meant we never had to watch him grow old, lose his looks, sell out, or make a bad film.

As iconic and familiar as Dean has remained for six decades, there's still plenty of mystery behind this lost-too-soon idol. In honor of his 85th, here are 10 things you need to know about the "Rebel Without a Cause" star.

1. Though he typically played the brooding outsider, Dean was a jock and a team player as a teen. He excelled at baseball, basketball, and pole vaulting in high school and took up fencing in college.

DVD Review: Celebrate Father’s Day with The Duke
There is no studio that times their releases more perfectly than Warner Bros. Around the end-of-year holidays there will be gift sets for films like “Elf” and “Willy Wonka.” Near Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, you can expect gift-appropriate releases.

And, of course, they always bring out the war movies and Westerns for Father’s Day in June. This year’s gift idea is a beauty, a massive 40-film, career-spanning set of films starring the legendary John Wayne. From 1932’s “Big Stampede” to 1976’s “The Shootist,” there’s a bit of everything for Wayne fans in here, but more for those who like war movies and Westerns.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

We don’t need to go through them all but highlights include “Rio Bravo,” “El Dorado,” “The Searchers,” “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “True Grit,” “How the West Was Won,” “Fort Apache,” “Donovan’s Reef,” and “Hatari!” Some Wayne...

Interviews: Classic TV Stars Hugh O’Brian, Sherry Jackson
Chicago – In the days when there were only three networks and less remote controls, TV stars were fewer and fame was rarer. Both Hugh O’Brian on “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” (1955) and Sherry Jackson on “Make Room for Daddy“ (1953) achieved some notoriety in those early days of television.

O’Brian and Jackson appeared at the Hollywood Celebrities & Memorabilia Show (now called “The Hollywood Show”) in 2011, and HollywoodChicago.com was there to interview them, along with photographer Joe Arce, who captured both stars in Exclusive Portraits.

Hugh O’Brian, “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp”

Hugh O’Brian, next to James Arness of “Gunsmoke,” was one of the biggest western TV stars in an era when the networks were flooded with horse operas. “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” debuted in 1955 on ABC-tv, and ran for seven seasons as a top rated show. O’Brian also made movies,...

Philip French's screen legends: James Dean | Film
No 86 James Dean (1931-1955)

James Byron Dean was born in the midwestern state of Indiana, less than a year after another fair-haired, blue-eyed, 5ft 8in working-class boy from the same state, Steve McQueen. Both had troubled childhoods, drove fast cars recklessly, and developed Hollywood reputations as kings of cool. When Dean was five, his father, a dental technician, took the family to California. When he was nine his mother died, and he was raised by an aunt back in Indiana and didn't return to California until after graduating from high school. He dropped out of college to act in 1950 and there followed one of the shortest, most dramatic careers of any American actor.

In 1951 he made four uncredited walk-on appearances in Hollywood pictures: as a GI in Samuel Fuller's Korean War movie Fixed Bayonets!; playing a second at a boxing match in the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis naval...
