For the memorable Memorial Day (called Decoration Day by Chet) picnic flashback, George Cukor relied for inspiration on a production of Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard".

This was the first film in which the actor playing Chet was credited under his new screen name, Aldo Ray.

Although he receives an "introducing" credit, Aldo Ray had appeared in Saturday's Hero (1951) the year before (and two other films), all from Columbia.
